CHAPTER 1

He couldn't believe he was literally going all the way to twang from Delhi, to attend a wedding. Now that was an entirely different topic that it was his sister's wedding. He wondered did his sister and he share anything common but their last name. Which sane person would to go all the way to Arunachal Pradesh just to get married? But his sister for one did that and now he was left driving all the way to Arunachal Pradesh. To add to his misery there was no airport in Tawang and the nearest airport was in Itanagar but since seemingly god was being very gracious at him, all the flights to Arunachal Pradesh had been barred for a weak. That left him with just one option . . . Driving.

He was exhausted and frustrated to no end. He had been waiting in Guwahati for the damned inner line pass to Arunachal Pradesh. If that was not enough, they were giving priority to defence officials. This was one place he wished he had a friend who was an army officer. His work would have been done within a few hours but his hard luck, the only friend of his who was in defence service was Yash and lately Maan had a good tiff with him. Maan had gone to the extent of telling Yash that he was just a mere officer whereas he himself was a man who had people working under him. That time what Maan did not realise was the fact, he may be the best business man of the country, he may be a millionaire but he could never in his lifetime compare himself with an army officer. They were way more respected and well in such matters privileged.

Actually, most certainly he wouldn't have needed anyone's help even for this matter had his grandmother not been that hard on him. His grandmother was fed up with him always using his name to get things done his way so she had made sure no one here would give a damn as to who he was. He wondered why he had to fight with dadi ma and shift to the outhouse. Had he not done that, he wouldn't have been waiting in a line here. Generally, it doesn't take more than an hour to get the pass when all the formalities have been done already but apparently it was a busy season or to be more precise his bad luck was also bad. Little did he know that his grandmother had paid the officials to delay his work and those officials who seemingly were not corrupted did it as a favour to a fellow officer--Yash. Initially Yash was not in favour of this way of teaching Maan a lesson but he respected dadima way too much to disobey her. Dadi ma wanted Maan to apologise to his only good friend for his rude and uncalled behaviour. Yash really did not mind anything that Maan had said but Savitri Devi believed her grandson needed a reality check.

He knew he just had to give him a call and his work would be done but you know there's something called ego. And apparently his ego was as big as an elephant. He was ready to wait for days but he wasn't ready to take the first step. To feed his ego, he practically waited for six hours to get a damned inner line pass. He collected his entry pass and headed for Tejpur.

The drive to Tejpur was tiring, the road was pathetic and littered with stones. It was not at all as a highway should be. It wasn't even metalled. Maan wanted to kill his PA for giving him wrong information. She'd told him the road was metalled and good for travelling. But what he did not know was he had taken the wrong turn and he was no longer on the highway. Apparently his never failing GPS had crashed big time. He preferred trusting his machine than the people who had warned him he was on the wrong route. Maan had stopped for a while to breath in some air when a young boy had asked him where he was going. When Maan told the boy he was headed for Tejpur the boy warned him he'd taken the longer route but being true to his self he dismissed the warning and continued on the wrong path.

Maan was famished, his food supplies were over, he had no water left for drinking and there was not a single soul in the vicinity. The reception in that area was very poor, and he wasn't able to contact anyone. He had no option but to drive. After what seemed like ages he reached Tejpur, the drive which was supposed to be maximum 4 hours got extended by another 4 hours. And to add to his misery the hotel room he had asked his PA to book was apparently not booked. He literally checked each and every 5 star hotel of the area and none of them had a room available. He did not bother checking lower rated hotels . . . Maan Singh Khurana's standards were higher. So again to feed his so called 'I-M-THE-MSK' attitude he rather slept in his car than look for cheap hotels.

The next morning he started his journey but before that he bought a road map atlas. Just when he was about to begin his journey he got a call from Yash. Yash couldn't help it, Maan was his best friend, they had been best of buddies since childhood. Even though Maan could be a bit mean at times Yash knew better than that. He simply couldn't let his friend suffer. He knew Savitri Devi had cancelled the hotel booking and also that she had done some wire cutting with the GPS. Yash was waiting for Maan to call once and he would be there but Maan and his ego. Whatever it be Yash couldn't happily sit and wait for Maan to come all fatigued. So he called.

He told him about what dadi ma had planned and also that his hotel booking was not only cancelled for Tejpur but also for the rest of the stops. Yash told him that he had booked an army guest room in Maan's name in Tainga cantonment. After that there was this transit camp some 5 hours from Tainga and that would be Maan's the next halt followed by the final destination twang. He gave him all the required instructions as to where Tainga cantonment was located; it was a few KMs short of the main town and on the main road itself. He was supposed to reach there and give Yash a call. Yash would inform the guards and he'd be allowed inside the cantonment. Even after Yash taking the first step Maan was still not ready to apologise for his mistake. But Yash knew Maan and he never really expected him to apologise.

Maan did as asked; he sent Yash a message that he was standing outside the cantonment gate. He did not call. Shortly after Yash informed the CO (commanding officer) of the area about Maan and he was taken to the guest room.

The next day Maan halted in the transit camp. Yash had already made the arrangements for the checking of inner line pass at Sheila pass and Maan did not face any inconvenience. That night Maan finally reached Tawang and the first thing he did once there, was check in the hotel his family was staying and crash on the bed. He did not bother greeting anyone not even Yash but Yash was used to it by then.
