No One's Like Jolie
Jolie White walked into a finely decorated fashion house with the hopes of getting a new job. Little did she know that in a few weeks she'd be getting more than just that. She walked to the top floor and asked for Mr.Austin Simmons.
"Go right in." said the woman at the reception with a stare that made Jolie uncomfortable. However Jolie went right in without a second thought. She rapped on the door.
"Come in." said a voice dully.
As Jolie walked in, she automatically felt unpleasent;for, all the four people in the cabin were staring at her. A man wearing peach shirt and khakis broke the silence.
"Err...can I help you with anything?" he said confused.
"Hi! I'm Jolie!" she said extending her hand. The man didn't shake it.
"Randolph Mathews. Vice President of this establishment." he said with a hint of pride.
"Hmph!"came a voice from a seemingly fashionable woman. She was wearing a diamond studded bracelet, rhinestone, dangling necklace. She fashioned a blue turtleneck, a black mini skirt, and very high heeled boots. "And you are here because..."
"Oh so sorry for my manners." she mumbled. I saw in the paper that you had an opening. I wanted to come by."
"My name is Alex Smith, and this si my sister Marissa Smith. I will be looking at your resume." he snapped.
Jolie passed her resume to Alex. He glanced at it, then to Jolie, then back. He walked to a table and whispered something to the man sitting on it.
"Oh really? Well, it doesn't matter to me." the man said. The man turned to Jolie and said, "You are hired."
"Austin... don't make this mistake." Randolph warned.
"Forget about it. Please, let me show you to your cabin. Oh sorry, I'm Austin Simmons." Austin said quickly. She followed him to the hall, but stopped abruptly and looked into the mirror. There was a girl that wore extremely large specs, silver braces, and kept her curly, unkempt, red hair in a ponytail. This was a face that made everyone stop and glare. This was Jolie.
The first few days in her office of Diamanta Inc. was uneventful. Other than people glowering at her, she was only assigned to answer Austin Simmons' phone calls.
Just then Austin walked in to her cabin.
"Sir... I--" The phone rang."Austin Simmons office, how may I help you. Ofcourse Mr.Smith. I'm sure he'll be there straight away. Have a nice day."
Austin stared at her with an impressed and confused face. "Tell me, your resume says you have no passed experience in answering phone calls yet... anyway, who was that?"he questioned.
"It was Mr.Smith. He wanted to discuss our budget for the next line of clothes." she answered.
"I told him that you would be there in five minutes."
"Good, good. Err... thank you."he said as he turned on his heels and left.
Jolie stared longingly at the door then sighed. "If only...no Jolie, no. Don't do this again. You are here to work."
Suddenly Marissa Smith walked into the room. Today displaying a leopard printed blouse, a knee high tan skirt, open heeled sandles, and wearing her hair in a left parted ponytail.
"Okay, I'm going to keep this short and sweet. Me and Austin are planning to get married. Keep your oversized glasses off my fiance. Not as though you could get him." she said in a dangerously sweet voice. "See you love."
This was exactly what Jolie was thinking. She could never get Austin Simmons. He was good looking, charming and rich. But she could still dream. With that thought, she left to her apartment.
Jolie reached her apart ment building. She was a few steps away when a scared looking boy ran across her and knocked down her groceries.
"Watch it!" She yelled, more fustrated than she was.
"Sorry." he mumbled."It's just that, you see there's this guy after me."
"I beg your pardon?" Jolie said concerned. "Oh you poor little boy. Come in."
Jolie led the boy in her home. "What's your parents' number?"
"My parents are dead." he said looking down. "They died last year. I live with my older brother Percy. My name's Richard Morris. And actually he's the guy after me."
There was a knocking at the door. Jolie opened it. There was a man at the age of about 28 at the door.
"I'm sorry, but is my little-- oh you little!" The man bellowed.
"Mr. Morris, I'm very sorry, but I cannot let you harm this child!" Jolie declared.
"ME! THIS LITTLE DELINQUIN JUST DROVE A LAMBORGHINI OUT TO SHORE! AND YOU ARE TELLING ME NOT TO HURT HIM!!! WHO GAVE YOU THIS RIGHT?" he roared.
"I wouldn't do this if you were at home with me. You're always at work." Richard sobbed. " I always get in trouble because of you!
"Richie, I would never do anything to upset you kido. I only go to work all the time to provide for you." Percy said calmly. "Come on, let's go back home. Sorry for all the trouble miss. If there's anyway I can repay you..."
"Let's invite her to the picnic." Richard said hopefully.
"I'd love too." Jolie said automatocally.
Percy smiled and winked at Richard. After that Percy left a note to tell Jolie where the picnic was taking place. Jolie literally danced for joy. She tore apart her closet and looked for her best dress. she chose a white, cotton, flower printed dress, and white flip-flops.
The next day was a Saturday so she got ready for the picnic. She looked into her reflection on her bedroom. She wasn't beautiful, but she looked bearable.
Jolie saw everyone at the picnic. It was not what she was expecting. She even saw a seven-year-old girl wearing a buisness suit.
"Ummm..."Jolie wondered looking around. She spotted Richard in a suit and tie. She laughed out loud and in return, recieved stares. She took a seat close to the back and observed everyone else in the room.
Finally, the speeches ended with an giving by Percy. Percy noticed Jolie and walked towards her.
"Glad you could make it." Percy said.
"I wouldn't miss it for the world. I can see you're quite popular." Jolie complimented. Percy laughed.
"I just own a company. We sponsore this picnic every year. In return I present an award for them." Percy explained.
The rest of the day was spent with Richard. They got some snacks and were about to go swimming. When Jolie came out from changing, she couldn't find Richard.
"Richard! This is NOT FUNNY!" Jolie hollered. She searched everywhere. Then she heard a scream. She looked out onto the ocean, there he was, caught in seaweed.
Jolie thought fast. "I'm coming! Don't move!" she advised.
"Oh, like I really can!" Richard yelled. Jolie dived in the water even though she couldn't swim. Instantly she was caughing in the water, but in the end she could untangle the seaweed and bring Richard to shore with hardly any breath. Percy came running to assist Jolie.
"Oh my God! Are you ok? Should I call a doctor?" He inquired.
"No," Jolie said coughing. "really, don't bother."
The next day at work she got her first assignment:to bring coffee to the boardroom.
"Jolie! This is not what I wanted. I said NO sugar. Can't you do anything right?" Marissa scolded, sporting faded jeans, a pink tube top, black dress shoes, and a hairband in her blonde hair.
" I...I'm sorry Ms.Smith." Jolie sputtered.
"Leave her alone Marissa." Austin said "Just think about planning our wedding, okay?"
"Ofcourse darling." Marissa said sweetly staring at Jolie as if daring her to object.
"And, Jolie, can I talk to you later? In private." he added.
Now it was Jolie's turn to look at Marissa. Irritated, Marissaa looked down. When the meeting was over, Jole waited outside the boardroom. Austin came out with Alex talking.
"So if I transfer the balance into the account from -- oh!" Austin said spotting Jolie. "Just a second Alex. Yeah, I wanted to talk to you."
"Yes..." Jolie pressed hopefully.
"I need help planning my wedding. You see, Marissa's becoming histarical. I thought that I could surprise her with an engagement party." Austin said kindly.
"I'll do my best sir." Jolie said sadly.
"That's the spirit!" Austin said happily. "Try to make it this Saturday."
Jolie nodded and went to her office. She was very upset. Her first real task was planning a party for the guy she fancied. Though, without hesitation, Jolie took aout her green notepad and blue pen and started planning the party.
Before she knew it, it was Saturday, but Jolie had everything planned. As she walked around the hall she studied the flower arrangements and cutlery. At 6:00, all the guests started to arrive. When everyone had been seated Randolph and Alex started to announce the events. Finally, Alex called out Austin and Marissa. Austin looking dashing with a smart grey suit and black tie. Gel on his hair, a smile on his lips, and polish on his black shoes. Marissa looking charming in a knee-high blue dress, strapped from the neck and backless. It was designed with a kind of white, smudgy look, that made it seem as though she was on a cloud. She had loosely curled her hair and added a bit of silver and blue glitter to it. Her stylish shoes were blue heeled, and the open straps were a greyish silverish sort of colour that Jolie couldn't seem to get a name on. Her makeup included a blue and white eyeshadow, black eyeliner, pink blush that seemed natural, and a cherry red gloss. To top it of, the couple both had a look of admiration for eachother on their faces. Jolie looked at them with awe. One of Marissa's friends, Priscilla, made a speech. Soon appetizers were served at 7:00. Everything was going smoothly. Austin kept nervously glancing at Jolie. However, Marissa kept giving Austin kisse on the cheek, stupefied that he had planned the party. At 11:00, the celebrations ended with a dance from the soon to be husband and wife. Although Jolie was depressed, she was also impressed at the fact that the party went so well. Soon after the last few guests had left. Austin walked up to Jolie with a very red face.
"I can't put it into words about how happy I am! This all went so well. I am very touched that you would do this." Austin praised. "Thank you so much for planning this party!"
"AUSTIN!" Marissa bellowed. "You didn't plan this? This -- four eyes here did? I knew that you would go back to your old ways. How could you let this working class girl organize my engagemant?
"Now wait just a sec--" Jolie interrupted.
"You just -- just SHUT UP!" Marissa cried.
"Hold your tongue Marissa!" Austin defended. "She has worked day and night for this party and if I may say so myself, it went extremely well!
At this point Jolie had tears in her eyes and Marissa had given up. Austin escorted Jolie to her cab.
"I am so sorry Jolie. This went really well. And you know what? You take my car. I don't trust cabs in USA." Austin laughed and made Jolie smile. "You found that funny? No one ever laughs at my jokes."
Jolie just smiled and took the keys. As soon as Austin was out of sight Jolie screamed and couldn't stop smiling.
Two years had passed since Jolie had started work in the fasion house. She had been promoted from secretary to personal assistant and had become much closer to Austin then before. He relied on Jolie fully. Jolie had realized soon after that fateful engagement party that she loved Austin Simmons and that she would do anything for him. Each day she had to face Marissa's nasty insults.
"Jolie!" Austin called.
"Coming Sir!" Jolie called back.
"Finally. Anyway, this what I was thinking. As you know, Diamanta Fashions' last line failed and we're on a budget. As you know the bank won't give us a loan...." he left the sentence hanging.
"Well, if we created a seperate company on maybe Randolph Sir's name, the bank would have to give that company a loan." Jolie said in a matter of factly voice.
"That's genius Jolie! My gosh you're so smart!" Austin raved as Jolie blushed. "But, I think we should put the company's in your name. We'll call it Pearled. Get to it Jolie!"
"Yes sir." Jolie said loyally.
After many trial and error situations, Jolie finally got her hands on the right documents. Jolie ran into Austin's office and saw him resting in his cahir with a glum face.
"Sir, are you alright?" Jolie inquired. Austin awoke with a startle.
"Yes Jolie." Austin mumbled.
"I've foun --" Jolie's phone rang. She picked it up. "Hello. Oh my gosh, Percy."
Austin's face froze. "Yes I'm fine. You? Your'e in town. I'd love to see you. Dinner, 8:00, you got it! See you Perce." Jolie turned off her phone. "I'm so sorry. As I was saying. Ive got the documents."
"Who's Percy?" Austin asked automayically slightly red.
"Oh, just a close friend." Jolie answered blushing.
"How close? Are you going out with him? What does he do for a living?" Austin asked very quickly.
"He is only a friend Sir." Jolie said confused.
"Oh, then uh... you uh... are going out to dinner with him?" Austin said akwardly.
"Hmmmmm....." Jolie smiled.
In the next hour Jolie left, leaving Austin thinking. "Am I jealous? No, I can't be. I mean , Jolie didn't really win the miss world pageant. But she is always there whenever I need her. Do I feel secure around her? Oh well." With that thought, Austin left for home, locking Jolie's cabin after staring at it for some time.
As Jolie got ready for her date, she remembered what her grandma once said. "Let your inner beauty reflect out." With that thought, she took of her specs, got the straightening iron out and went to the dentist.
When she reached the dentist, Jolie sat in the waiting room. Children around her stared at her. One child took one look at her and said to his mother, "Mommy, it hurts to stare at that lady."
Just after that, "Miss Jolie White." a woman in white called.
"JJJJussst... aaa...minnnutte..." Jolie said sobbing.
"Ah...Jolie, what seems to be the problem here?" He smiled and showed his silver braces.
Her eyes red and face pouty, she said, "I think that I'm ready to get my braces off."
The dentist thought on this question. Finally, he was ready to answer. He gad a stern look on his face. "Bu --"
"I'm 26 doc. I can't keep them on any longer." Jolie inturrupted.
"I am very sorry." he apologized "But I'll tell you what I can do. I can guarantee you one night without it, but then you have to come tomorrow and get them back on."
Jolie wiped her tears and nodded quickly. Soon, Jolie found herself being gassed and dizzy. She woke up with a mirror to her face. "How does it look?"
"WOW! It's so smooth. I can't belive it. Thank you so much Henrey." Jolie said. She was grateful to have such a great dentist. Though, he was the one to put those horrid things on.
Jolie drove her Hyundai to the eye shop. A woman with blue rimmed glasses greeted her. "Hi. How can I help you?"
"I'm looking for good glasees." Jolie responded.
"Hmmm... I think I can get you some very nice ones. Would you like to keep your own?" she inquired.
"Yes, they're a bit personal." Jolie muttered back.
The woman gave her a very kind smile. She showed Jolie some circular glasses. "Can I see the square rimmed glasses please?" The woman smiled and grabbed a pair of black rimmed specs. Before Jolie knew it she was out of the shop, harnessing her new glasses. Jolie reached her building and was ready to face the world for one day as a beautiful person. Jolie did her best with her hair, even though she struggled very much, but in the end she had silky, straight, highlighted hair. Though the highlights were temporary, she felt as though it woul make a huge difference tonight. As for her attire, Jolie prepared an emergency package from her most fashionable friend, Neelam. As she opened the package, her jaw dropped. In front of her was a Lemon Chiffon, short sleeved shirt. The shirt had a V neck and an embroidered botice. She next part of the package was a sweater that went with the shirt. The sweater was netted and was the colour Honeydew. The lower part was a caprice pant. It was a faded tawney. The whole wardrobe gave a look of spring. For her shoes, she went with a low heeled Cornflower Blue. She wore makeup, but very light makeup. She wore blue eyeliner, a hint of blush, and a sheer gloss. When she looked into the mirror, she almost flinched. The person staring back at her did not look like her at all. All the same, she called a cab and was on her way when her phone rang.
"Hello?" Jolie called annoyed that she would be late.
"Hi Jolie, it's me Austin. Just wanted to talk about our ne plan. How about you, me, and Randolph?" he asked.
"Oooh, not tonight. I'm sorry sir. Well got to go." Jolie hung up before Austin could say good-bye.
"Damn!" Austin swore. Some children who were passing by, were glowering at him. "What? It's not like I said the B word." The children shrug their shoulders and left.Austin couldn't believe that he just got rejected to dinner.
