The Indian weddings means business to halwai and caterers, mehndiwalis and banglewalis, boutiques, beauty parlours, and hair dressers, choreographers, band-baja wale and Ghodi(horse) wale,DJs, music, dance, food, beverages, flowers, decoration, tents, transport, photographers, video-makers, card makers, gift packers, designers and a whole lot of people
Why deprive them? It drives the economy 😆

Don't confuse opinions with slandering......I can have an opinion but I cannot defame anybody without proof...that would be illegal.....
If I am saying I don't like lavish weddings...that doesn't mean I am imposing myself on someone...I am just saying that I don't like it......
@RTH......Can u please let us know what are the forum rules for expressing general opinion.......I know we are not allowed to call members and celebrities ...names but what about general opinions...

I said that approximately half the population has lower than average IQ not low IQ.
And no one said that you're not entitled to your opinion. I didn't agree with it so I posted against it.

But even opinions can be expressed without name calling. Saying that you find it foolish is an opinion but saying that such and such couples are fools and idiots is passing judgement not just expressing opinion.

And who said that one has to target a specific member to classify it as offensive, otherwise not. If I say that I find all NRIs to be 'fools and idiots', will it be innocuous just cos I didn't target one specific member?

My thoughts precisely. They are pumping the money in the economy and atleast some people are getting jobs and earning money because of that.

Moderators Note: The forum prohibits bashing and abusive behavior. What constitutes such behavior can be subjective though and varies according to maturity levels and sensitivity of each section. DM on the whole does not take all statements personally and can engage in mature debates.

In this scenario I don't think it should have been necessary to call for DT to be involved at all. It was a situation where both you and Souro could have easily cleared misconceptions. It was just a difference of perception, which needed some clarification and explanation. There really is no need for DT to be involved in everything unless there is a gross accusation or violation taking place.

However, to add how I view the rules - foolish, idiotic are terms people often use to describe opinions and things, and sometimes don't even realize it.

It would be foolish to spend on a lavish wedding & It would be foolish not to spend on a once in a lifetime memory. Such opinion expressions are usually fine.

People who spend money on lavish weddings are idiots & People who don't spend for a memorable wedding are idiots. Unfair generalizations, fall in grey areas and will be dealt with in context.

Otherwise the COC outlines direct attacks on members, celebrities, groups, communities etc. I always try to frame all violations in context – before deciding action.

Almost everyone loves to party and celebrate their most important events in life... It makes people happy and the only person to decide on how much is too much is the one paying for it.
Every celebration be it weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, bar-mitzvahs, graduations etc involve a certain amount of financial expense so it is subjective for each and every family on how much they can and are willing to spend.

The trend now is to donate the money spent on return gifts or trinkets that the wedding guests receive at their table but I have yet to see or read about anyone that donated the entire cost of the elaborate function ( a few lakhs in U$D or rupees or whatever currency it may be) and opt for a court marriage.
The thing is people who can afford to spend tons on a function or a mansion or a car can and some do donate to charity in equally large amounts.. Donating to charity requires a different mindset and usually not done in lieu of fore-saking on splurges.

@ the topic...wedding is the beginning of married life so follow the style that both you and your partner foresee each other living in (happily).:)

Just to add TLC is the channel with shows like "19 and counting", "Toddler's and Tiara's", "Sarah Palin's Alaska" "Wild Weddings". These and shows like "My Sweet 16" "Jersey Shore" "Real Housewives" etc are not looked on highly by people here. Usually people use very choice words to describe people on these shows.

In fact these shows run so that us good for nothing viewers can sit on weekends in front of TV for marathons and completely trash talk and bitch out people in these shows and somehow feel good about the fact that we are so much smarter, better and sophisticated than them. Another ridiculous part of Americana that is lost on the better sensibilities of the rest of the world.

On the other Indian television viewers wonder why we don't argue more wildly if Rachel should have ended up with Ross or Joey, or argue wildly about Carrie Bradshaw and Mr. Big's EMA.

Anyway, TLC Wild weddings for people to enjoy and decide if they would like to have one. It does have some lavish OTT weddings but a lot of times it has dumb stuff like the brides veil getting caught in a car, the groom falling down or some drunk guests etc.
