Ishaan and I went for long walks on the beach, chatted nine to a dozen, or just enjoyed the sunsets. Everything was going perfectly fine when suddenly we met an old couple who were complete opposites of each other. The woman was very arrogant and treated her husband badly. I felt awful for the poor uncle!! Later when Ishaan teased me that I might turn out like her when I grow old, I got irritated with him!! I don't think so, as I am not that bad-mannered!
But I was really upset about the way that woman was behaving with her husband, who was very sweet to her. I tried keeping my anger under control and changed topic, so as to not think about them and spoil my time with Ishaan.
Later, Ishaan and I went for a drive and we crossed paths with the couple again. This time too, the same drama played out, as the aunty kept insulting her husband - in front of a crowd. She wasn't bothered about his health or the fact that he was injured. This time, I couldn't stop myself and lost my temper. I spoke to her and asked why was she was ill-treating her husband and told her how her behavior was hurting him. But she didn't see my point instead was rude towards me. I was baffled when her husband too spoke in her favour. I felt sorry for him and wondered why was he tolerating her tantrums.
Ishaan calmed me down and soon we were back to being a happily married couple. We danced together which was fun and had a romantic evening. Being with Ishaan, I felt I was in heaven. With him around me everything seems easier and possible.
Suddenly our plans were cut short as the uncle turned up asking for help as his wife was very ill. We were shocked to see her in such a critical condition. Uncle told us that he fears aunty's death as she is suffering from cancer. He felt really helpless. Aunty explained that she was rude because she wants him to get used to living without her. While talking to her, we realized she loved her husband a lot and was very emotional about it.She thanked Ishaan and me for helping her. We were astounded to see this side of aunty, as it was a total surprise. I hope Pammi aunty gets well soon as it will surely bring a huge smile on Uncle's face.
I understood that this was the key to maintaining a long lasting relationship with your loved one. Being with each other, accepting each other the way they are and loving each other unconditionally…. Uncle and aunty might be completely opposites by nature but their love for each other was eternal and overrides all problems. It was the concern, care and feeling towards each other than bound them for life. This was a huge lesson for me about love and life. I promised Ishaan that I won't ever leave him and that we would be together till death do us part. I teased him too but he knows that I love him a lot, from the bottom of heart.
I guess meeting uncle and aunty taught me about loving someone for life. I have learned how to maintain long lasting relationships and I would like to share some advice with you all. I hope my pointers would be useful for all you lovely people out there...
1. First key to a long-lasting relationship is to spend quality time with each other. No matter how busy you are, you must spend atleast one hour just with each other.
2. Most couples complain that the qualities they loved in their partner initially, start irritating them later on. If that is the case, I suggest you find new qualities to fall in love with!! Look for endearing quirks but don't try to change your partner. After all, you fell in love with the whole person not just some qualities.
3. Be your own person. You should have your own identity. One shouldn't be dependent in any way on one's partner be it emotionally, or financially.
4. Fights are inevitable in relationships but when you do get into an argument, have a healthy fight. Stick to the current cause of disagreement and not bring in past problems. Be careful with your words or you might regret them later. Remember arguments should resolve problems not aggravate them.
5. Communicate more and well. Talk openly and honestly with each other. This is a crucial part of any healthy relationship. Pay attention to your partner and try not to accuse or judge him/her. Don't let emotion drive you, it won't help in the long run. Truthful and sincere talks are the key to a better understanding.
6. Make time for yourself. Do things that make you happy. This way you can maintain a healthy balance between your relationship and yourself. Personal freedom is important and good for the soul. But talk it out with your partner lest he/she thinks you don't need him/her anymore.
7. No matter the depth of our love for our partner, you will sometimes be angry, hurt, or resentful about something your partner did. Be willing to readily forgive and forget trivial issues. This is essential for a happy and stable relationship.
8. Keep romance alive in your relationship. Plan surprises, outings, gifts, sweet notes.
9. Honesty is a major foundation of a strong relationship, so be truthful about yourself. Like Ishaan knows everything about my past and still loves me a lot. I trust these recommendations are helpful. Please send in any suggestions you might want to add.
