Synopsis

School girls are getting together after the year end, and waiting to take a group photo. They are waiting for Naina. They all search in the dormitory for something and Naina's hand falls on a photograph. It is the one with are father as a child. She talks to the photo with nostalgia. Shrishti, class mate discusses with her and tells her that her father will come to take her. She asks her " who is coming to take you.?"

Naina gives a shawl to her maid in the hostel and tells her to remember her always. She embraces her with emotion, and the maid says,""What are you doing ?". Her friends want her to hurry. They take the group photo. Shrishti's father comes and they meet and talk. She introduces Naina to her father. When the uncle asks her who is coming to receive her, she says her father is no more, her mother will come. She is on the way. They leave, and Naina wishes them good bye.

Naina enters her car. Her mother is not there, as she has sent the driver. As soon as she comes in she hugs her mother, and gives an emotional and endearing embrace, and in return she gets a cold and formal mother. She has a highly organized formal family. The mother stays aloof and uptight. Her prospectus for a Bombay college is placed before her, and she is asked to have her lunch as she flips through a file, and then walks away, saying she has to go for a meeting. Naina is confused, at her mother's attitude. At the dining table they have their formal lunch, in typical British style, of the colonial era, and formally the mother asks, as would have the old British dames, what she has decided to do for the future. When she says, "nothing", the mother says she has thought and got her an admission in a Mumbai college of Management. Tells her that she will have to leave in three days time. The daughter says, "Thanks Mom. How much you care for me," The mother tells her to have her food. That they will speak later. She says, "Later? After three days, or after three years, or you will have some other plans for me then." The maid intervenes and tells her if she wants some fruit, and she says "Radha Aunty, I do not want any fruit." She continues to say to her mother: "I am not a child, Mom, Why do not tell straight, you do not want me to stay in this house. From School to Hostel, and from Hostel to College, I am not given a chance to feel this is my house." The mother puts her fork and spoon down, and stands, and gives an ultimatum and says she has no time now to talk, she is getting late.

Naina too gets up from the dining table and goes out to the hills of her childhood and remembers the past. Her mother is looking out from the terrace and ponders her own life that has been cut short by her husband's death. The maid, tells her mistress, that she has seen her suffer everyday, and it is good if she told Naina the truth, as she too has grown big.

In the town, Naina has walked towards the railway station, and jumps into a moving train, and here she sees a young man sitting near the window seat, which she wants to take She remembers the coach they used to ride, and inside, requests the young man to give her the place. She says "Excuse me" but the young man ignores her. She tells him that it is her seat. She tells 16A is her seat, and the young man says it is his and refuses to move. A passenger says, take my place. Then the TC comes and she tells him that this man is her husband and does not value Naina. This is the first experience which determines the mind of this young man, that this girl is a liar, and from then on their paths meet often. His name is Daksh Patwardan. Naina is in her own world with her father, in the days gone by. Naina picks a conversation with a passenger and discusses marital problems and says when her husband gets angry, goes on reading the same newspaper. Says these husbands who work in government understand only government orders. The TC tells Daksh to move, and give place to his wife. And gives him marital advice, and Naina complains that he has forgotten sath phere, and the TC tells him to get up. All passengers agree that the husband should give way to his wife, and so Naina gets the window seat, and from then on, you will see the roses and thorns in their path. As the station comes a friend of Daksh comes to meet him and gets the impression that Naina is Daksh's fiancee, and goes away with this impression. She will meet him later in Mumbai.

21/12/2010

At home a friend comes to meet Anjali, the mother of Naina to discuss about the MBA admission. But as Naina has gone gallivanting on the train, she apologizes to the man, and he tells her he will meet her after three days.

Naina goes back home. The mother wants her answer where she had gone, and Naina comes out with all her pent up anger and asks her for an answer and says that she does not love her. Why she is like this. The daughter asks why she never came to her school, and where she is and she can not find a face of a mother. She is all confused. She says "you have all plans for me, but I have been always obeying you, so that I can get my mother's love. But mother why you do not love me. Tell me mother. Mother has not answer. I am sorry if I have offended you, forgive me but do not separate me from you and I will be a good girl and live with you. Tell me answer. I want your answer."

Anjali, shouts, "I am not your mother", and all goes silent.

"You got your answer." Naina looks on. "When i see you, I feel sorrow, and the hurt that your father gave me when he brought you home. You are my husband's daughter, but I am not your mother." (Her mother was one Supria). She repeats "I am not your mother" and Naina cries.

Mother shuts herself in her room, and Naina cries bitterly asking her to open the door. Anjali sits on the rocking chair and dwells on her own sorrow.

Naina decides to leave the house, but not to the college but to go to Darjeeling for Shristi;s wedding.

In Darjeeling, Sushant and Lekha are with Daksh, taking pictures and talking about Naina. Daksh in his high horse speaks about rectitude, and his friends do not understand.

Back home, Naina prepares mother's breakfast, and tells her that she is leaving home, when she asks whose baggage is this. She says it his hers, and she leaves the house not to aggravate the situation for her. She is going to find her own future. " I must go now. " The maid asks, "where will you go?" Naina says, " I am trusting on my luck, and going away." Sullen Anjali, with her stoic face, looks at her laptop, and does not say anything. Naina hopes she will say: "Stay back" but in vain. She asks if her mother tried to find out about her. She says, "No. Supria never asked about you. "
Naina remembers what her father said when she was small: "If you trust in God, he will show you the way, and you wil never get lost."

Naina leaves Sikkim to go to Darjeeling after she comes to know that Anjali is not her mother,

Naina is in the home of her class made Shristi, in Darjeeling and she is involved in the wedding preparations of her friend. The family too likes her and her charm, as well as her abilities to organize a wedding. Shristi's father remembers and asks her if she knows about the items the Pandit wanted for the havan, and she says, all will be ready, and not to worry.

Daksh Patwardan, the young lawyer from Mumbai whom Naina had met before, too has been invited, with his friends to this wedding, and one of the friends misplaces his watch, and they search.

Shrishti's mother and father search for envelopes, and Naina gives to them. The father talks about wedding planners, and tells them they arrange fantastic weddings. An idea is implanted in Naina's mind.

Friends get together and discuss about Naina and how to get her married to one of their relatives. One lady speaks to Naina and tells her that her mother too must be trying to find a nice boy for her, and she just stares, and someone says, lot of inquiries have to be made. She asks if any of her relatives have come She says her uncle is Alexander the great. If you had read about him, you would have known and walks away.

In the shoe hiding routine there is a confusion and Daksh gets involved and there is a little embarrassment, and Daksh has a tiff with Naina. He came as a guest of the bridegroom. His friends blame him that he spoilt the name of the Boy's side by joining with the girls side. They give Naina the 'nek.'

As Daksh walks out of the room, he is in a fit of temper, and there Naina with her school girl pranks confronts him. She is still in the college hostel mood, and full of fun and frolic and Daksh has come from a stiff necked Maharastrian family from Mumbai. Both are poles apart in their way of thinking and the express train rattles on, as Daksh brings out all the old ill feelings that were being suppressed by him. First his meeting with her in the train, where he was made to get up as a dutiful husband, and then when his friend came out of her room drunk, and she came out later. Daksh shows his suspicious nature, which will trail him through his life.

Naina give back to him in equal measure, her answer, and tells him to keep to his place and she is not concerned about his opinions, and his impressions about her character. She tells him to keep his ego to himself.

The next scene, we find Naina, coming out of a train station in Mumbai.

I have a different take on this serial, which is not the same as those expressed by others in this forum.

I find this serial the best shown on Star Plus, and wondered why they put it on afternoon slot at 2 pm. I now know, the majority of viewers prefer those shown on prime slots. I beg to defer with the observation of Star Plus.

I watched all the old episodes on this link

I found the various aspects of movie making are done with exceptional professionalism. Acting, Cinematography, Background Music, Story line. The story moves from a rejected girl child, who has guts, to reach the top. She may use untruths, to gain her ends, but the situation is not of her own making. It tries to show millions of young girls facing similar situations, and is meant to give them a hope. By contrast Akriti has been destroyed by her over possessive father, and this is meant for the modern day fathers, to take note of the consequences of their actions.

The kids among the viewers and all over India fall in the category of Vendant, the brother of Akriti, but they should aspire to be like Daksh, who has succeeded to become a lawyer, though he has a one track view of truthful behavior by not being flexible, he is in a danger of losing on the good aspects of people that surround him.

I hope we will gradually grow to appreciate good stuff. The mindset of the young will mature, and we will live in a scam free India.

Vibha, Rohini her daughter in law, and Naina

Naina tries to know from Daksh's father some information on Maharashtrian weddings. Just them Kaka, brings a man, as a prospective groom for his daughter, and shows his grit and all the rest approach him in subdued reaction.

He orders his wife around and then takes the groom up to his daughter's room claiming that she has met with an accident. When the groom asks if the girl can be a good mother to his two daughters, she is stunned, and the mother asks if the groom is married. The husband orders her to shut up. The groom tells her that he was divorced a year ago. It is then told, that he is 12 years older than the girl.

Daksh enters and tells aloud that this marriage can not go ahead. He tells the groom, that the girl does not intend to marry. The groom, who it appears is a bank manager, goes away and then Daksh confronts his uncle. He warns him that according to Indian law, he can not force his daughter into marriage against her will. In case he does, he will file a case against him, and fight it in court. He is a divorce lawyer by profession. The uncle is cowed down and walks away, protesting to Naina, who is his bread basket. Daksh shows his antipathy towards Naina, who is talking to his mother about her niece. On entering her room, he tells his mother, that he wants to speak alone with her regarding his cousin's future. Naina wants to leave, but the mother prevents it, saying she is a member of the house. Daksh proposes to send his cousin, Akriti, to his friend's house in Darjeeling. Naina asks how long can she stay at a friend's house, and Daksh interrupts and says, he does not care to know her opinions. He has taken the decision.

Incidentally, the father too says the same, that he will take the decision for his daughter. Here the cousin, a man, also says he will take the decision for his cousin, a girl. What goes on in the minds of men? Do they think girls do not have brains to make their own choices. Is it the attitude of men, the writer wants to show, to put the viewer to shame.

At the gate, a visitor appears, and Daksh meets her. The visitor asks if Naina stays in this house, and he says in the affirmative. He asks her who she is, and the reply comes: "I am her mother". Her estranged mother has had time to think, and has come down from Sikkim, to meet the child of her husband - that bubbly child whom she showed no love, but lavished all material comforts.

Anjali is played by Vaishali McDonald. It is nice to see South Indian and North Indian artistes equally at ease in portraying the characters of our whole multi-faceted country. We should be proud of these artistes, and encourage theatrics in our children. May our musicians too learn to score their own back ground music which is sorely lacking. Channels should encourage these musicians, and other workers who give us these nice serials by working in the background. The musicians in this serial are doing a good job.

When you see how the story has developed so far, we see a pattern in the story. This story sticks more closely to the natures of people. Naina is the daughter of Sameer and Supria, the latter is not shown, but Sameer's wife Anjali looks after this child, even after his death. The child is unaware until she is 21, when she comes from College. She wonders why her mother constantly keeps her shunting up and down, and when her mother tells the truth, she gets upset and leaves the house. Basically, she is a vivacious person, with lots of guts from a well to do and educated family. Due to her predicament, she uses white lies to get along in life.

Daksh a lawyer, brought up in a moral family has been ingrained with values of truthful behavior and any lie irritates him. His first encounter with Naina is in Sikkim, on a train, when she bluffs the TC that she is the wife of Daksh, to get the side seat, and the TC lectures him. Daksh's friend sees them and presumes they are friends, and later it is found that both of them were going to Darjeeling, where Naina's friend is going to get married.

The scene shifts to Darjeeling, and there are more bumping into each other, and Naina shows her skills at wedding planning at her friend's wedding and this is how she ventures into this line when she ultimately moves to Mumbai.

In Mumbai she tries to get paying guest accommodation and her first experience is with sexual harassment, from a father of the family, and she moves out and meets Daksh's mother at the jogging park. This leads her to Daksh's house.

In this household two brothers share the house. The elder one is Daksh;s father, and the younger one who has a nasty streak is Akriti's father. Finally she becomes a paying guest here, and comes to know that Daksh is "Chintu" whom his mother is waiting for.

Now the episodes move to Naina venturing into her first job, and where she goes as Daksh's wife, and succeeds, but Daksh is very upset with this arrangement. On the way back, the plan of the two mothers of the Older men, back fires that Akriti's suitor finds her odd, and rejects her, which upsets the girl who has withdrawn into herself, and tries to commit suicide, and that is when Naina and Daksh return and they all rush her to hospital.

Naina in the last episode bares the whole truth to the couple who engaged her for the wedding planning, but they still want her to continue.

You see in this serial, a clear type casting, of the natures of individuals, and the consequences arising from the interaction of these people. We hope that Akriti's father makes a move to change, and so too Naina and Daksh. We do not see only negative streaks in a nature, we see a pendulum of qualities which swing to either side, so there is hope one would see the other side of the person and make rapprochement.

Actors are there to portray characters, and one should not be confusing them with the person of the Actor, but keep his nature and character in mind and guess which side you would like him to go. The writer of the story may have another take, and there lies the intrigue.

There is a subtle play in the characters. Kaka, and his nephew Daksh, seem to be cut from the same cloth. Both are control freaks and want to have their own way.. Kaka is abusive and destructive, but Daksh is the same, but is more suave, and is ready to go any length, to get what he wants.

His father is of a patient kind, and the mothers are doves in comparison. Vedant, is what he is as a reaction to his father. Akriti, who was good in painting, has been crushed. But Naina in her quiet way, has recognized her potential. Daksh's mother is just a trigger to set her in motion.

Naina is a product of a broken family, and has learnt to survive against all odds. God has given her such chances, that she has not faced failure, but she has had to be ground in a mill of life's experience.

Kaka seems to soften, when he knows he is financially secure and balances his behavior accordingly. Both Daksh and Naina play on this weakness of his.

Daksh truly loves his cousin and her welfare is at his heart, but due to his one track mind, he can not see the point of view of the others. Naina on the other hand sees, the final goal, the objective is clear in her mind. (A good business person should always have this) That is to save Akriti and make her self reliant. If she is thus made self reliant, she can face any struggle in life. She has gone through the same process, and as a girl, she sees another girl's dilemma.

Daksh on the other hand sees everything in black and white. His moral values inculcated by his family are his bulwark, and any one who does not follow these values is not able to get on his side. He has not seen life at close quarters as Naina, and this story is a tug of war between two characters.

In today's episode, Daksh plans to send Akriti to Darjeeling, just as her father took control of her life and made a servant of her. Both men see life as black or white. The women, though they know what is right, do not have the moral power to defy the male who they think has power over them given by God. They humbly acquiesce to this state of affairs. This is a mirror of life of women in India.

When Daksh proposes to spend all the money and in addition give Kaka 10 thousand for expenses, he changes and accepts Akriti to go to Darjeeling. He like Daksh does not see what is good for her. They want to give her fish, but not the fishing rod. On the other hand Vibha and Naina see life in another way.

Surprisingly, Naina is shown as getting along the business world in Mumbai, and offers to pay Kaka 15 thousand for Akriti as salary. Those who are in business in Mumbai know this is all ...and so only here we are shown the weakness of the writer, in order to close his plot he uses a fiction gimmick.

A recent divorcee whose case Daksh fought comes with an invitation. In two months she is planning to marry. This too is a fiction, as in real life, things do not happen so easily. Here too the writer could have introduced another character instead of this divorcee. She has got a recommendation and Naina is her choice. This happens, as so often, a good word leads people to those who prove themselves. Naina's positive attitude and good nature, has endeared her to her clients. Her dedication to her work is the source of her success. This is true and the writer encourages others to follow this path. Rather than the Sheti's money lending business, on whom Naina had turned the tables recently.

Finally we are introduced to Anjali, the step mother of Naina, which role has been taken by Vaishnavi McDonald. I am very proud of our Indian artistes, who can portray any character so well. May more young people aim to enter this field or theatrics and social entertainment, where one would be free from the aggressive greed and lust of men.

Daksh and Vibha his mother are outside the house in the courtyard, where a lady has come to visit them for her wedding. At the same time she wishes to know about Naina Bardhwaj, who is a wedding planner living at their address. Vibha tells her it is true, and the lady asks their opinion or Naina's work. Daksh with a smile says she is good.

As Daksh is about to close the gate, a car arrives with a driver, and due to the reflection of the windshield, he is not able to see who it is. The door swings open, and a lady steps out well dressed and elegant in appearance, walks to the gate and asks if Naina stays there. Daksh leads her into the house.

In the house Naina is getting ready to go for work, and Vibha, wishes her to give her prasad, and as both face each other, with Vibha brimming with maternal love, and Naina with eager face, receiving the prasad. Vibha wipes the mouth of Naina with her pallu, when Daksh, and the lady who has introduced herself as Naina's mother, walk into the house, and Anjali, the foster mother of Naina walks over to where Vibha and Naina are standing, with apprehension.

There are tense moments, of dramatic expression on the faces of all in the room. One of the best scenes in this episode, and a demonstration on the histrionic abilities of these artistes. Naina faces Anjali, either not knowing what the other is thinking about. Both recollect the day, Naina with tears in her eyes was told by Anjali that she is not her true mother, and the girl had left the house.

Later, Anjali had met a lady with a child in the park, who had shown how one could love a motherless child, and adopt her and be as good a mother as the one who has blood bond. Ever since, this has been eating her from within, and today she has decided to travel from Darjeeling to Mumbai, to see her daughter and convince her to come back.

The Patwardan family invites Anjali to stay for meals, and she stays back, and is invited to sit. Kaka enters and comes to know that she is Naina's mother, and feels he has struck gold, and tells her to sit on the sofa on his side of the house, but the guest does not know the thinking of this man. She projects himself with his silly talk, and Anjali immediately gauges him, as he asks where she lives, and being told that she lives in Darjeeling. Kaka offers his opinion that it must have taken her two days to come to Mumbai, she tells him, no, only two hours. She tells him she came by plane. Just when he wanted to talk more, Daksh enters, with his file. Anjali gets up, and takes a liking to Daksh, and says, "you, I did not meet?". Vibha introduces him as her son. Daksh respectfully folds his hands ans says "namaste". Anjali must be wondering what type of family this is, as Kaka shows his colors, and the rest of the family is so subdued and well mannered. The outsider can figure out people fast, but self conceited people like Kaka, who think only of themselves, and look down upon rest of the members as low, and flatters only those with money can't.

Before taking leave, Anjali asks Naina to come back, and tells her how much money and property her father has left for her and she need not work and live like this. Naina's dreams are not the same as Anjali's. They are from two different planets !

Anjali, the step mother of Naina, is still in Patwardan house, and there is a contrast of behavior of the two mothers, Vibha and Anjali. Their children, Daksh and Naina are also contrast. One has to see how Daksh behaves, as if he is a spoilt brat, and the mother brushes his behavior as "self willed". Naina, on the other hand shows that there is something amiss between her and her "aunt". The Aunty does not know that Naina is allergic to mushrooms, but Naina knows her "aunt" likes black coffee without sugar, and that she does not like sweet things.

This mysterious behavior is unresolved. On Vibha's advice,Naina takes her "aunt" - her step mother, to the "office" which is being painted. Anjali glances at the work of Naina, and when she considers Naina's life as a struggle, Naina points out that these are stepping stones to a successful future. When Anjali asks her when she thought of becoming a wedding planner, the daughter gives her cryptic answers. Naina has suddenly matured at the age of 21. Her step mother can not understand why she leaves her luxurious life, to this life of struggle. Perhaps, Anjali was brought up in the lap of luxury, and has still not matured, as has Naina.

What a contrast in characters ! Kaka vs his older brother. Vibha vs her other sister in law, the wife of Kaka. The former self confident, and the other absolute in diffidence, thanks to her strutting vain husband, who is basically empty headed and full of vain glory ! The sons of the family: Daksh and his older brother. Vedant who seems to be a bomb about to explode. Kaka is his fuse, and for some good fortune, the fuse gets extinguished at the right moment.

The dialogs and scenes are crisp and moving quickly. No gimmicks like in other serials, where songs, slow motion, circular panning are all used to prolong the episode, and gain for time, but unfortunately also it gives them a drop in their TRP. In the cat and mouse chase, I wonder what the Channels take their viewers to be. Perhaps they live in ivory towers.

Summary

The family reunion, between Naina and her step mother continues. Breakfast and then it is time to go. Saw some beautiful crockery, in this middle income household. Did they take it out to entertain this rich woman from Darjeeling, who came to see them ? Anjali persuades Naina, and offers an open ticket to come back. Naina politely but sadly, declines. She excuses herself, and outside, she allows herself to shed some tears. In the room, the same happens to Anjali.

Vibha the concerned matron, looks for the welfare of all. Her husband stays at a safe distance, and Daksh with unappreciative eyes, can not understand why his mother goes out of her way. He can not understand what makes her do these things. As for himself, he can not tolerate Naina, and is at a loss to find out what goes on between her and her mother. It is a mystery to him.

Kaka's wife innocently places the cookies brought by Anjali in a plate of offer the rest of the family, and the nauseating sight of her husband, with his wry smirk on his face, taunts her, that Naina is his paying guest, and her visitors are his guests, and what they bring is for him. So he tastes one or two cookies.

As Anjali tries to bid good bye to the family, whom she has had high opinion, there comes from the foul mouth of the middle aged Kaka, who seems to thrive on others misery. He says: now that Naina is from a rich family, he could expect more rent from Naina. She does not think it deserves a reply, and the sarcastic look she gives him, also makes her mother re-confirm her opinion of this exclusive man, in this household who is absolutely different from them. One wonders if he was the real brother of the Old Man, or an adopted son, since he is so vengeful, and resents everyone. This secret may come out much later in the developement of the serial, when the producer think, the viewers had enough of him.

Vibha offers Anjali, Daksh to take her to the airport. But her private car and driver are already there, and she takes their leave.

Note: I would like you to watch carefully, how the camera work in this serial. The craftsmanship is really great. No gimmicks and stunts that we see elsewhere, like out of place slow motion, songs interruptions, circular panning etc and in-out zoom, just to show they have the button. This is what a good cine craft should be, and I hope students of cinematography will take note.

Giving Up

Giving up, on our efforts, is quite natural. I myself felt it, but changed my mind, when I found, there are people who appreciate me. Naina too is same. When her step mother came, may be she was so stressed out, that the thought of giving up may have crossed her mind. But then she thinks of Akriti, who is more vulnerable than her.

Good ByeThe moment of parting was extremely touching, and we should thank these artistes who give us a glimpse of real life, that our hearts too vibe in sympathy. Cold hearts become slightly warmer. This is because, the producers, writers, director, and the team never gave up on their vision. Even though their work is hardly appreciated, they are given the worst slot, yet their endurance will be their prize. The recognition of the choosy viewers will be theirs. Taare Zamin Par, come on Indian TV, and the quality is equally brilliant. I have just fallen for this serial.

The clash of personalities of Naina and Akriti, both young, idealistic, and one with vibrant hope and the other with dormant one. See how the former wakes the sleeping giant, and removes obstacles in her path, one by one, starting with her greedy father. See the subtle way, she tackles him. Her path is strewn with tips for those who follow behind her.

Daksh, watches her with glaring eyes. Perhaps he wonders, why he a man, can't get people round him. May be you guessed the answer, but if Daksh brushes his ego aside, he too can see.

His mother is 'divine' in her love and dedication, always with a smile. She is born with this nature, and it never tires her, and her son wonders what makes her so. Have we also not wondered when we have met such people in our lives, who have breathed a ray of hope and trust.
