Star's 'Gulaal' gamble: Is it paying off?
January 31, 11
Fatema Rajkotwala

It was in November 2010 that Hindi GEC Star Plus decided to bid adieu to one of its high performing primetime show, 'Sapnaa Baabul ka' Bidaai'. The show was brought to an end after a steady performance graph in the three years of its run since it launch in October 2007.

In its three-year run, 'Bidaai' had moved up the ratings chart to form an integral component of the channel's fiction offering and contributed a significant chunk to help the channel hold on to its numero uno position. It may be recalled that during 2007, Zee TV had rejuvenated its programming line-up with shows such as 'Saat Phere' and 'Kasam Se' and had come within inches of overtaking Star Plus. 'Bidaai' was one of the key shows that had worked for Star Plus then.

Officials from Star Plus have firmly held that the decision to discontinue 'Bidaai' was essential and unavoidable and that it was better to end a show when in its peak rather than on its way to a decline.

The replacement show 'Gulaal' however has not matched up to expectations yet. Even as the ratings of a show ending cannot be compared with that of a new show, fact remains that, as per data from TAM Media Research for C&S 4+ Hindi speaking markets, with 'Bidaai', the 9.00 pm slot fetched average ratings of 4 to 5 TVR (even high of 6 plus TVR) for Star Plus.

Comparatively, 'Gulaal' gave Star Plus 9.00 pm slot an average monthly rating of about 2.5 TVR in November, and rose to 3 TVR in the beginning of December, leading to an average of around 2.5 TVR in the month of January 2011. Audiences have yet not seemed to warm up to the story or concept of the show. The pinch in viewership ratings is noticeable, but the channel continues to keep the faith.

Speaking to exchange4media, Vivek Bahl, Executive Creative Director, STAR India, said, "'Bidaai' had lived its life, and the decision to replace it was right. 'Gulaal' is a great concept, the right show to do at the 9.00 pm slot and in my opinion, the most beautiful looking concept on television across shows currently. The manner in which it has been shot is fantastic; the direction and the characters of the show are very good. To be candid however, we may have left the story for a little late into the show. The main story is just about kicking off right now."

Bahl explained the main story of the show is set to begin now, and the channel would support it with marketing exercise.

STAR is well aware that the going will get tougher beginning February with new launches such as Imagine TV's heavily promoted property 'Zor Ka Jhatka' with host Shah Rukh Khan in the 9.00 pm slot. Bahl said, "It is very tough already. Gulaal has not caught on as yet but the story will begin only now. Two major stages in the main storyline are yet to kick off, and that can turn things around for the show."

Star Plus has made significant progress in growing the early and late time bands. There is no denying however that 9.00 pm is core general entertainment primetime. It would be interesting to see how audiences respond to 'Gulaal's storyline, and what Star Plus would do if the response is not good enough.

okay, I got the point then why introduce a new character for just four months and make new audience interested then. 🥺Gulaal is promoted well and after months I saw pratigya and caught promos of the 9:00 pm show at every break.

Just a few days back they were saying that prime time begins at 7:00 pm , anyways I was never a vivid starplus watcher and with axing a show which had my fav actor, there is bad signals from them that starplus don't care about actors nor its viewers so total boycott of Starplus from me . I shall watch Zor ka Zatka henceforth, full and final.😃

Plz aise math bolo ki why introduce a new character like anmol becoz only with anmol ppl like me started loving apu so much and only now we came to know how wonderful he is as an actor. Many are still looking forward to see bidaai 2 with apu and parul. I feel RS did the right thing in bringing apu even it is for short span of time.

Regarding Gulal I just hope ki SP suffer and majboor hoke bring back bidaai 2. I am happy ki Gulaal is not doing good. Thanks for the news rekha dii.

😆

Firstly so they want to put forth teh idea that any show which reaches the no 1 position needs to be axed after a period of time

so looks like bebo will be the last out

Seriouly Starplus are loosers big time and thats why theya re makling these so called maha episode

As far as Bidaaii is concern what happened post leap was purly Anmol's story

Ragini 's feelings for Anmol was not even shown.. Moreover the other factors like Ranveer;s death which Ragini dose'nt know how it happened all covered up

So much of story was there and they were asked to shuit teh shop.. I am actually surprised at their take for their number one show...

Amd as for gualaal is concern the TVR was 1.66 last week what a disaster...

Well people would have high expections from teh show if it had to replace Bidaaii but what the person clams is just BS.. when you see the ratings of a show running for almost 3 months now is having not able to come in the top 10 or 15 for that matter.

And whats with the concept water finding ???

where the hellis that I see that Gulaal now being show a widow for vasant

where to where has teh show been trnasfered..

Where is the unqioness of teh show ???

Starplus u r sulry going on a disaster spree..

And for axing teh no 1 show I am sure other channels will give u a ride of your life by pushing u back.

@rekha..thanks for article..😊
wat a man this vivek bahl..still arrogant and full of ego...
knew it he will be proud of their risk strategy and still having faith in gulal and is best replacement of bidaai...
is this a joke he said right..😲..
the main story has not started yet..ok either i'm confused or mr vivek is totally confused himself..
i think he is taking viewers for granted here..any soap opera we do know after intro of the casts the main concept is unfold and we get the twist and turn of the storyline..here 3 months now the main story is yet to come...seems he dont know how to cover their big mistake and coming up with such lame excuse..👎🏼
we do know as per article read in IF news they are banking on the lead actress marrying her little bro-in-law as per ritual and next second main track look alike of her husband or watever will be back..then mr vivek you can keep holding the candle if this will bring high trps..
anyways if they cant value a show that has given them such recognition and good trps to raise the channel to #1 and make such statement about it like "bidaai had lived its life and the decision was right"then any day i want the other channels to give big competition to SP and bring it down.
anyways colors already doing so and IMAGINE is coming tomorrow with its zor ka jhatka..a daily at 9pm...😃
i have watched the french version of this show..the adventurous task are mindblowing and srk as host...then i will say poor mr vivek bahl marketing or no marketing its not working nor it will work.
next time come with a true statement and accept the channel did wrong ending bidaai..
"There is no denying however that 9.00 pm is core general entertainment primetime. It would be interesting to see how audiences respond to 'Gulaal's storyline, and what Star Plus would do if the response is not good enough."good question and this i will be very eager to know wat SP will do..
anyways SP i dont watch anymore so i will be watching zor ka jhatka on imagine.. 😊
