Nothing Can Keep Us Apart
Part 95 - The man she loved
All the ladies in the room were looking with big smiles on their faces at the infant who was sitting on a blanket laid on the floor. At the moment, she was happily banging together some toy blocks. Anyone who happened on the scene at that moment, would never know that just half an hour earlier she had been wailing enough to bring the house down.
"Wow, Geet. Priya sure has a good set of lungs. Maybe she will be a singer when she grows up."
"You haven't heard anything yet, Pinky. She's been going through a groW*H spurt, and the last few days, whenever she's extra hungry, she had no problems letting me know about it."
All the women laughed, and hearing them, Priya smiled and banged her blocks some more. Then she dropped what she was holding and leaned towards Geet, until she fell over on to her stomach. This fall didn't deter her, and she continued to scoot towards her mother, using her arms and hands to pull her along. Not getting where she wanted to go fast enough, Priya rolled on to her back, held her arms out to Geet, and began whimpering.
Geet chuckled at the cute picture her daughter made, even with the sad face, but hurried over and picked her up quickly. Once Priya was in her mother's arms, she began her favorite activity. First she tried it with Geet's necklace, but there was nothing loose enough for her to grab properly. Then she tried with Geet's earrings, but she couldn't quite reach them. Then she tried Geet's nose and mouth, but although they were touchable, they didn't move. Finally, as a last resort, Priya went with the sure thing, Geet's hair. Taking a fistful in her little hands, she stuffed the ends of Geet's hair into her little mouth.
Geet didn't mind Priya's saliva getting on her hair. When you were taking care of a baby, there were much messier things to deal with than a little baby slobber. Soon enough, Priya was bored with her mother's hair, and looking for something else. She saw just what she wanted next, and began leaning towards it, her arms outstretched.
"I'm sorry, Priya, but whatever you are wanting, you won't be able to have. Pinky Mausi is very busy today. Let's see if we can't find something else to distract you."
"Will I do?" asked Savitri, coming into the room with a smile, and walking over to her bahu and great-granddaughter. "Geet, I know there are still quite a few things you need to get done, and I thought it might help if I looked after Priya for a while."
"That would be fine, Dadima."
Geet handed Priya to Savitri, and Priya went easily, as she was very well used to being in her grandmother's arms. She also liked to pull on her necklace, which was much easier to get a hold of than the one Geet was wearing. As Savitri started to leave the room, Priya looked back at her mother and gave a worried expression. Seeing Geet smile and wave to her, Priya settled back down to her important work of getting the necklace into her mouth.
"Geet, I'm really nervous today."
"There's no need to be, Pinky. Adi is a really wonderful guy, and he loves you a lot, hai na, Aunty?"
"Absolutely, Geet," replied Chandra, Pinky's mausi. "Engagement is only the first step. It's nothing more than a big party, really, where everyone can enjoy. It's nothing to be nervous about."
Since Pinky had very little blood family, just her father, mausi, mausa, and their two young daughters, Geet had taken a lot of the engagement preparation responsibilities onto herself. Both she and Pinky considered each other like sisters, and just as Pinky had been involved in Geet's wedding, so Geet was now involved in Pinky's.
At one point, while running around upstairs, Geet felt a tug on her arm, which landed her in a fairly dark place. Of course, she knew who the tug was from. In the little light available, she could see her husband giving her his self-satisfied smile, even while he wrapped his arms around her.
"Maan, what are you doing?" she asked, even as she put forth a half-hearted struggle to get away.
"Can I help it if I missed my two princesses?"
"Two princesses? What two princesses? Priya is with Dadima, you know."
"I know, I already had a chance to give my choti princess a kiss some time back. Nows it's the turn of my badi princess."
"Here? Maan, this is a closet. There is an engagement happening today, and there are lots of people running around. Any one of them could open this door and see..."
Maan stopped her bak bak the easiest way he knew how, using his own lips to quiet her. Geet, was not one to be silenced easily, and broke away quickly.
"Maan, that's not fair. You do that every time I try to..."
"Maan, you better not...ruin my..."
Finally, Maan's continued kisses overpowered Geet's mind, and she wound her arms tight around her husband's neck, returning his kisses enthusiastically.
****************
"Pinky, why the long face?"
Pinky was eyeing the table of sweets longingly, but doing nothing else. In a forlorn voice she said, "I shouldn't eat any of them. Now, or later."
"But why not?" asked Geet, surprised.
"I need to loose weight." At Geet's unbelieving look, Pinky continued, "You know, so that I'm not so chubby for the wedding."
"What? You've got to be kidding."
Pinky shook her head, and continued to look with longing at the food. Geet grabbed Pinky's hand and made her turn around to speak face to face.
"Pinky, there's nothing wrong with the way you look. And if you're thinking about going on a diet because of Adi, don't. You don't need to change yourself for him. He fell in love with you the way you are, and he'll continue to love you, without you having to loose weight."
"You think?"
"Of course."
"Will he look at me like he wants to eat me?"
Geet thought that it was a strange thing for Pinky to ask, and questioned, "Why are you asking ?"
"Because Jeeju has that exact expression on his face and he's looking this way. I don't think it's because of me."
Geet's heart fluttered and her breath stopped as the full impact of Pinky's words registered. She couldn't help but remember what had passed between them just an hour earlier.
Geet couldn't stop from turning to see the sight of her husband for herself.
Sure enough, he was standing by the staircase, and giving her a look that sent her temperature soaring. Geet turned back, but couldn't help the smile that appeared on her face, or the blush that filled her cheeks.
"Are you going to talk to him?"
"No, Pinky. Adi and his family will be coming soon. You come with me now."
As she walked away with Pinky, Geet could feel Maan's gaze on her back. She knew exactly what he was trying to do. Dusht danaav! Well, there was going to be no repeat of their earlier episode. Not here at least. He would just have to wait until they got home.
There was a slight commotion at the door, indicating that the soon-to-be groom had finally arrived. Geet could see Adi's parents greeting Uncleji, and then Uncleji shaking Adi's hand and giving him a hug. Looking at the blush on her friend's face, seeing her boyfriend arrive for their official engagement, Geet felt so happy. Now Pinky was going to finally have the man she loved as her husband, just as Geet did.
