Nothing Can Keep Us Apart

Part 92 - In the church

Waiting in the church, Maan felt nervous, almost as if it was his own wedding, and not the DeMello's vow renewal. His nervousness was not helped by the constant questions about Geet's whereabouts. She had called to say she would be a little late, as Priya was being fussy again, and refusing to take her nap. Every time Maan was required to explain where she was, people would comment on what a good mother Geet was, and how lucky Maan was to have such a sweet wife. Of course he agreed with them, he just wished that she would come quickly and stop his waiting.

Maan had thought that working on the DeMello's project, which they wanted to reflect their love, would be a perfect opportunity to Maan and Geet to discuss their own love, and for Geet to finally express her feelings and tell her love. However, no matter how much Maan tried to coax Geet to express her feelings, she shied away. When George and Rose begged them to be their best man and matron of honor after declaring their work on the project amazing, Maan decided to rethink his strategy.

Remembering the situation in which he finally confessed his own feelings, Maan now realized that it was a little silly to expect that Geet would say her feelings for the first time in the office. She had created a similar romantic setting when he got back from his trip to Australia, but he hadn't been able to keep his hands off her, and he wondered now if he might have ruined her plans to confess. Maan knew his wife very well, and knew that in many cases she could be very bold, but that in this case it might be difficult for her. So, he decided to help her out, and with George and Rose's permission and help, he had a surprise waiting for her at the church. If she ever showed up.

Geet had tried to get to the church in plenty of time, but fate seemed to conspire against her. It didn't help that she had been getting weird vibes from Maan all day, making her feel a little uneasy. Feeling a little uncomfortable to be seen in public wearing one of those see through sarees Pari insisted that she buy, Geet hurried out of the car and into the church.

When she neared the room where the ceremony was to take place, she slowed, not wanting to rush in, if they had already started. She came slowly up to a curtain, and peaked around, looking to see if it was alright to come in. She saw George and Rose standing with the priest and Maan on a stage in the center, under an arch of flowers. It seemed as if they were waiting for some reason, and when they all turned to look at her, and smiled, Geet realized they were waiting for her.

As Geet stepped out fully from behind the curtain, her eyes never left Maan's. The look in his eyes at the sight of her, gave her all the confidence she needed to walk in alone in front of all those people. Watching Geet glide towards the stage, everyone felt like they were looking at the bride, and not the bride's matron of honor.

Geet quickly took her place next to Rose, and the ceremony began. While the priest explained the importance and meaning of the vows George and Rose were renewing, Maan and Geet couldn't take their eyes off each other. It was impossible not to remember their own wedding, and the vows that they had taken together.

When the ceremony was finished, Maan and Geet were so involved with each other, that as the others moved away, they moved together, like two magnets, unable and unwilling to part. Rose, realizing she was missing someone, turned back, and saw them together. They were looking so romantic, she couldn't resist asking them to pose for a picture.

Maan put his arm around Geet's shoulder, and pulled her close. They stood like that for a few minutes while the photographer to several shots.

Then Rose took Geet by the hand, and pulled her along, saying that her matron of honor needed to go with her and her bridesmaids. Geet didn't want to leave Maan, but had no choice, as she had duties to perform. As she left with Rose, she didn't see the silent communication that happened between George and Maan before Maan walked off alone.

****************

Geet walked into a room decorated with hundreds of flowers and soft lights, and thought that George must have been mistaken. She knew how much Maan hated flowers. He would never be waiting for her here. Geet was all set to leave when she felt a familiar hand on her shoulder. Turning around quickly, she saw Maan standing behind her. Geet tried to ask him what was going on, but he put his finger to her lips and shook his head, indicating silence.

Soft music started playing in the background, and Geet felt Maan's arms move around her, as he started swaying back and forth. They hadn't danced together since Pari's wedding, and Geet felt herself get lost in the moment and her husband.

They dance very close for a good amount of time. Then Maan suddenly backed away, leaving Geet confused. She was about to ask him what was the matter, when she felt a strange sensation on her back. It was lighter, and softer than Maan's fingers, traveling up her shoulder, and to her cheek.

When she turned around, and the sensation moved to her lips, she discovered that it was Maan brushing her skin with a flower. A flower. Geet was shocked! She just could not take it in.

Taking the flower away from Maan, Geet first backed off, and then ran a little bit away, into a far corner of the room. She couldn't get her mind around the fact that Maan had held a flower on purpose. He must have done it for her, but why? Why?

Maan came up behind Geet, pulling her close, and kissing the back of her head. This threw Geet into even greater confusion. Maan seemed to sense her problem, and finally spoke.

"It is only the two of us here, Geet. Only you and me. There's is nothing that you need to be afraid of. I've been waiting a long time. Won't you tell me, can't you tell me, what you feel for me in your heart?"

Geet felt the emotions well up inside, as she considered Maan's question. Yes, she had made him wait to hear what he wanted to hear, but he deserved it for the stupid avoidance behavior he had subjected her to. But now, he had done so much for her, done so much to hear the words, that she wanted to answer him. She just wasn't sure how to say what she had to say. Geet was to shy to look in his eyes, so she stared at his chest. Through the opening of his jacket and shirt she caught sight of the taveez, and with it, an idea.

"Maan," said Geet slowly, "Will you take off my taveez?"

"What?"

"My taveez," repeated Geet, holding out her hand.

That was the last thing he had been expecting, and just the thought of removing it seemed painful. However, Geet's hand was waiting, and he couldn't very well tell her that he wouldn't give her back her own property, so he reached up to take it off. As soon as he placed it in her hand he felt lost, and wasn't sure he wanted to hear what she would say. While Geet's hand closed around the taveez, Maan began backing away, purely out of an instinct to avoid pain. With her free hand, Geet grabbed his arm, keeping him from leaving.

"I never told you the story of this taveez, how it came to me. I was at a mela one day and I stopped to speak with a baba at the insistence of my bhabi. He gave me this taveez and said that I should put it on the one who would be my humsafar."

Geet's lips wobbled and her eyes filled with tears as she continued, "Do you remember when we met at the guest house, what I said to you that night?"

Maan instantly recalled the incident, and unlike the last time, felt pain instead of anger as he repeated her words aloud, "You said that I was a person that no one had ever loved, and that no one would ever be able to love me."

Tears spilled out of Geet's eyes, and her hand moved involuntarily from his arm to his shoulder, squeezing it almost desperately. "That was a terrible thing for me to say. It's not true, and I don't want you to ever think that it is."

As Geet lifted her face up towards Maan's, and as he looked into her tear filled eyes, hope kindled inside his heart. He could feel his pain melt away, not just what he felt in the last few minutes, but years of pain that had been inflicted in him by many others. He didn't know exactly why Geet was answering his question in the manner she was, but he was willing to hear anything she said.

"You are so good. I've never known anyone as good you. The way you saved and protected me when we were perfect strangers, how you helped and supported me when I came to Delhi, the love and care that you've showered on Priya and me, even knowing our past, all this shows how good you are."

Maan wanted to protest, but Geet was too fast for him, placing her finger on his lips. Continuing, she said, "In my family, girls are considered almost worthless, having no rights of their own, and never allowed to make their own choices. You make me feel like I'm special, like I'm worth something. You support me and accept that I have the right to make choices, not only for myself, but for our family. Not only that, but you actually listen to me and take my advice sometimes."

"I don't know if you realize what a precious gift you've given me, but I want you to know that I will never forget. Everything that you do for me is forever written on my heart. You are my sun. When you're there, the whole world sings. When you're not there, my life is darker than night."

Geet took a deep breath, looked away briefly, and then looked determinedly back into Maan's eyes, even as tears continued to escape down her cheeks. "I don't have the words to describe how much I love you. The only thing that I have that is truly my own to give, is this taveez. Will you let me?"

Maan found it impossible to speak, so he nodded his head yes. Geet needed no further encouragement to replace the taveez around Maan's neck. She carefully held the medallion and moved it so that it laid smoothly underneath his shirt. Then she placed her hand on his chest over his heart, and gave him a teary smile.

"The day I was given this taveez was they day I first met you. The baba told me to make you wear this, and that Babaji will bless up. I pray that he will bless us, not just with seven lives together, but to be together for ever."

Maan was entirely overwhelmed. When he concocted his romantic plan, all he was hoping to hear from Geet were three little words. Instead, he got such a confession, that he felt until this moment he had never lived. All he could do was take Geet's hands in his and raise them to his lips.

Looking back into Geet's eyes, he saw that she seemed to expect some sort of response from him. Not quite capable yet of speech, Maan leaned forward, and kissed first her right eye, and then her left. Leaning closer, Maan whispered roughly in her left ear, "We will always be together, Geet. Nothing can keep us apart. Tum mere jeevan saathi ho."

Who Got There First:

No words enough to describe the love - Serial first Dec 29 Episode. They had Maan say it, I had Geet say it.

PM Disclaimer: I have not stopped sending pms to anyone. If you are no longer getting pms, you might have reached the maximum allowed. Try cleaning out your inbox.

Ever since this sequence was shown in the serial, I've felt that it had a similar feeling to this update. Even though I used Pee Loon pictures I felt that Geet's emotions and decision to confess are more like the Tumko paya hai scenes. So, here is my version in VM form, enjoy.

Hey,
When I was reading the above paragraph, I had tears in my eyes and they actually blurred my vision temporarily. Before I could continue on to the next paragraph, I had to take a few seconds to take a deep breath and wipe of my tears.
This update was one of the most romantic and emotionally charged updates. 👏👏👏
Wonderful.
Loved it.
I loved how Maan said...Nothing can keep us apart.
Thanks so much.
