Nothing Can Keep Us Apart

Part 79 - Peaceful smiles

Geet couldn't keep herself from smiling as she watch Maan getting their daughter read for bed. She had been shocked at his insistence that he would do everything for Priya tonight; the bathing, dressing and feeding. Geet was quick to remind him that he wouldn't be able to do the feeding. He grumbled, but then realized that she had not objected otherwise and hurried away with his tiny daughter so she could have her bath.

Geet chuckled to herself over Maan's attitude. He acted like he thought she would object to him taking care of the baby and so would always try to justify himself to her. Almost as if he thought she didn't trust him to do things right. It was actually the opposite that was true. He was the only one besides herself that she trusted Priya with completely. He was her father and Geet could tell from his behavior how much he loved their daughter and would do anything to ensure her safety and happiness.

Priya's Namakarana that they had just celebrated earlier that day, was a perfect example. When it came time for Maan to whisper the baby's full name, 'Priya Savitri Khurana', he stroked her head gently and gave her a light kiss when he finished. It was difficult to persuade Maan to allow anyone else to hold her, even when the ceremony required it. Geet had to quietly admonish him several times, to not make a scene in front of their guests. Yes, he was definitely under the spell of their precious little girl.

Watching Maan finishing dressing Priya for bed, Geet admitted to herself that his behavior would likely become more calm if she confronted him and indicated her trust in him regarding their daughter. The trouble with doing that, is he looked so cute every time he showed his fatherly possessiveness for Priya. She also couldn't be sure that he would ever let anyone hold Priya again, if she said anything to inflate his already large ego. No, she would have to keep her thoughts to herself.

After Geet finished feeding Priya, she handed her back to Maan, so he could put her in the bassinet that was set up temporarily in their room. As she watched Maan lovingly cuddle Priya before putting her down to sleep, she remembered the first time she had fed Priya in their room. It was the first night they had been home, and when Geet woke up to sounds of a hungry baby, she quickly picked her up and tried to take her out of the room before Maan woke up.

"Where are you going?"

Shocked to hear the voice of the husband she thought was asleep, Geet stopped, feeling uneasy at his tone and answered, "Woh...uh...the nursery."

"Why?"

"To feed Priya."

"Why do you have to go to the nursery to do that? You can feed her right here."

"Well, I...uh...I...didn't want to bother you and..."

"Bother me?"

"You know babies wake up a lot in the night, and you will have to go back to the office pretty soon. I didn't want to spoil your sleep."

"Spoil my... Geet! Sometimes you make me so frustrated! Nothing concerning my daughter could bother me, or spoil anything. Now, come sit on the bed. You can feed Priya comfortably there."

When Geet still hesitated, Maan complained, "You're not feeling shy in front of me, are you? Come on, Geet, it's not like I haven't seen you nurse Priya before, and you use a privacy blanket anyway. What's there to be shy about?"

Having gotten out of bed and come around to stand next to Geet and Priya, Maan took Geet by her shoulders. He made her sit on the bed, adjusted her hold on Priya, and taking the blanket, draped it lightly where it needed to lay for Geet's privacy. He then got back into bed himself, and waited until Geet was finished nursing Priya to hold her himself. He held her gently and patted her back just like an expert, before laying her back in the bassinet. The same process was repeated several times that night, and every night there after.

Thinking back over the last two weeks, Geet marveled at how well she and Maan had taken to caring for their new-born. Yes, she sometimes had to be a bit aggressive in asserting her motherly rights, but overall, she and Maan complemented each other so well, it seemed like they had been doing all this for years. It was second nature now that Geet should lace her fingers through Maan's hand as she stood next to him and bent down to kiss her daughter's tiny forehead. It was entirely natural for Maan to move his arm to encircle Geet's waist, while she laid her head on his shoulder, both watching the rhythmic breathing of their sleeping child with peaceful smiles on their faces.

Nothing Can Keep Us Apart

Part 80 - Anxiously waiting

Tonight, all Delhi is anxiously waiting for the new day to come, and with it a verdict in the Dev and Naintara Khurana case. As was rumored, the defense's entire arguments rested on the claims of the younger Khurana and his wife, that his elder brother, Maan Singh Khurana, had used his fortune to falsify evidence and frame them for someone else's crime. It remains to be seen whether the judge will except that explanation.

"It is entirely ludicrous to suggest that I was working with Mr. Khurana in order to create fake evidence against his brother," said API Shekhar Patil of the Mumbai Anti-Narcotics Cell.

"I was interested only in gaining information about a high-society drug ring that our department was investigating. Believing me to be an assassin for hire, Naintara Khurana boasted about carrying out their fraud with her husband against Mrs. Khurana. It was entirely her own words that were captured on video."

Many people have been wondering why the Khuranas were not charged with attempted murder, given that they were caught due to their efforts to employ a hired killer. When asked, the prosecution had this to say, "The evidence presented in this case only that which is related to the specific charges filled due to Mr. Khurana's first report against his brother and sister-in-law. At that time, there were no allegations of murder made against Dev and Naintara Khurana. Any charges related to the attempted murder of Mr. and Mrs. Khurana will be made as a result of the investigation made by the police in Mumbai, and all evidence related to that will be presented when the Khuranas are tried for their crimes committed in Mumbai."

Dev ignored the newspaper that had been delivered with his meal, preferring to sit quietly in the corner of his cell. He couldn't help but wonder how his life had turned into such a mess. His mind kept recalling the argument he had with Naintara after that police officer had presented the tape of Naintara admitting to their crimes. He had been reluctant to believe she could stoop so low as to want to kill his brother, but had no choice but to accept the facts.

When he had confronted her privately, she tried to deny it, but he knew her well enough to spot her lies. He railed at her for even considering such a horrible idea. She had then turned the tables on him by complaining that everything was his fault. First his gambling, and then his inability to keep his hands off Geet, had put them in this mess. He yelled at her for keeping Geet's pregnancy a secret, and she yelled back that she knew he would care more for his child than her. They went back and forth, blaming each other, until Naintara finally seemed to run out of steam. She stated that there was no use in arguing now, and that if they wanted to get out of this situation, they needed to work together, and deny all the charges.

Dev had been reluctant, but Naintara threatened that if he didn't go along with her, she would testify that everything had been his idea, and that he had forced her to participate. She guaranteed to be so convincing, that the judge would have no choice but to believe her. Dev eventually agreed to her demand, not really seeing any other option. Just as she coached him, he answered all question, supporting her story of the false evidence, and denying any evolvement with Geet. He had done his best, but he had no idea if it was going to be enough.
