I have always wondered why is there such a huge market for so called 'Fairness Creams' in India..not only for women but lately also for men!!
Does that mean that women/men who are not fair are not beautiful?..aren't we sending the wrong message here??
Or does it mean that women who are fair are Beautiful...
It's quite natural, being a tropical country, Indians have a higher concentration of melanin in their skin which actually protects them from the harmful affects of UV rays including Skin Cancer etc.
Have been living in the U.S for several yrs now and haven't seen any ads touting fairness creams for African Americans..who always say Black is Beautiful!! and I heartily agree!!
I think its high time such ads got banned from the media for spreading the wrong kind message..its highly discriminatory and demeaning!!

Fairness has been associated with beauty with people for donkey's years. You've seen these matrimonial sections of news papers. Families always wanting "fair and goodlooking" brides/grooms. Take the oppression of the black people in general. The general logic in both these cases is "fair is better than dark".

That is one of the reasons, but it's a broad reason.

Let me get deeper into this.

It's like a vicious tennis rally. The Ad companies base their ads on the reason mentioned above and the mindsets of people are further influenced. It's like fuelling a machine that produces the ingredients which are used to produce the exact same fuel, and so on.

Well, african americans are dark, so the creams can't really make them fair. In India the creams are mainly for Indians whose skin have the potential to become fair. Or perhaps the american's are more evolved and less primitive in this regard that they don't feel that fair is beautiful.

The creams focus on removing those impurities or obstacles which prevent the person from attaining the maximum levele of fairness he or she can obtain. That's why people should buy them. It's not a "skin color converter".

The ads show people who "can become" fairer. It's more focussed on proving that "dull" skin is inferior to skin with total clarity. Like I said before, it doesn't turn black stallion into kalki's white horse.

I feel that people in general , are foolish and misinterpret the ads.

Nice topic. I remember watching we the people and they had this exact same article.

Some said b4 that,'Makeup can make you look pretty on the outside. But it doesn't help if you're ugly on the inside. Unless you eat the makeup'

There is prejudicial concept of beauty in society where fair = beautiful, dark = ugly.. and these creams simply prey on this mentality. The adverts don't help either, e.g/ some dark guy asks a girl out, and she turns him down.. then he applies the cream, asks the girl out again, and she says yes 👏.... another advert, a girl gets rejected for a job because she's too dark 👏.... so these creams do nothing but propagate this notion of beauty.

There are many good things said in this thread about the ever so famous "Inside Beauty" but lemme say something simple and straight ...

Indian people love "Fair Complexion", infact "The Whiter The Better".

You might come up with super witty retaliatory remarks ... might actually be at your trickiest best ... might even outright deny this and say that the "White Color" India likes is not "That White but This White or Such a White ..." ... but lets face it, they like "White" pure and simple. Unless they know for sure its due to being an Albino ... they love that total Albino White aswell ... oh not just love but are driven nuts on that color!

Look at all the latest bollywood songs or item numbers ... the dancing women are all Russian or Ukrainian these days. Cuz?.... That pleasing to the Indian eye.

Indians simply hate "dark" complexion ... if not hate, then they end in "Not Appreciating it". Those who have it "DREAMS" of fairer men or women, but at the same time for pride's sake defend their complexion by giving lame remarks on PRIDE or INTERNAL BEAUTY and what not ... making out proverbs which even go as saying that "Black outside, white inside"... Doh.

I know I am being mean ... but plz dont get hurt and think about it from a realistic angle.

Another thing: What do you look into when you see a person for the first time? The heart of the face?... Ofcourse the face, physique and complexion attracts you ... and only after you are attracted, you move forward to discover more.

Think about it.... although I would love all these to change ... but for India I dont see it happening sooner.

well, you are not being mean..Just stating the Facts!! and yes physical beauty ( which perhaps includes fairness,) is what attracts the attention first and then comes the rest.. Frequently one gets turned off when we come to know a person if they don't have a good persona, no matter how lovely or beautiful they may look.
