I have Beta Thalassemia but it doesn't affect my life at all. I didn't know about it till a couple of years ago and was picked through a blood test i was having for something else. Thalassemia major can be fatal and you would need to go in for regular transfusions. And yes it is more common in South Asian and Caribbean communities but like some people have mentioned alot of people are not aware of it. It is a genetic disorder.
I have T-minor, but have never needed any care, what so ever. Most people with thalassemia beta or alpha minor are not even aware of it. In fact it is a very common problem with Indians, but most Indians are never tested for it. Doctors in India most of the times wrongly diagnose it as Iron deficiency. Only care that one should take is to make sure not to get married to another thalassemia trait person or the kids could have a 25% chances of getting thalassemia major, which is fatal. Well, I hardly watch Big Boss now, so I am not aware of the jokes involving him and therefore am not commenting on him. However, I wanted to clarify this Thalassemia related confusion because this is some thing Indians (given it is more common in South Asian and Mediterranean countries) should be aware of. In fact, if I remember correct, last time I was in India, there were ads trying to make people aware of the importance of getting these tests done before getting married.
