The Vatika Shampoo Star Parivaar Awards 2005 are around the corner.
After the spectacular success of the last two years, Star Plus
brings us once again an event where the objective is to select the
perfect Star Plus family, comprising the most popular characters
from their
programmes. The awards go not to the individual or the performance
but to the character that is being portrayed. Now we all know that
the character would amount to nought if the actor does not deliver
the goods, but Star's concept is fun and we are happy to play along.
In all, there are close to 30 categories: favourite bahu, ma, saut —
you name it, they have it.
So, who will win favourite pati — Sumit of Kumkum or Karan of
Kyunki? Bulletins in the media indicate that Karan is leading,
leaving us to assume that viewers prefer a husband who is sandwiched
between two wives over a pati who is utterly devoted to his one and
only patni. Strange. Even stranger is that Ansh (Akashdeep Saigal,
Kyunki) is said to be leading by miles in the favourite beta
category. Which family would want a killer-rapist for a son? Add to
this nominations for the maniacal Nitya (Kkavyanjali) for favourite
maa, the terminally conniving Komolika (Kasautii Zindagii Kay) for
favourite devrani and the demented murderer Apo*na Basu (Kasautii
again) for favourite jethani and you wonder if the awards shouldn't
be called the Star Psychotic Awards instead.
Not that things were hunky dory in the past when the so-called
perfect parivaar included adulterers (favourite pati Mihir Virani,
Kyunki), womanizers (favourite devar Rishi, Kahiin To Hoga) and
totally absurd winners (Prerna of Kasautii winning favourite bahu
when she wasn't even a bahu). It's all quite amusing and so long as
you don't take it seriously, it's a pleasant ride. The two
Nomination Specials were enjoyable, the Jodi Special was a treat —
the round where the husbands draped a sari around their wives was
especially a riot — and Star is bound to put on a dazzling show of
the actual event.
As for the most popular award — the favourite jodi — this time there
are five pairs who have been nominated: Sumit and Kumkum (Kumkum),
Karan and Nandini (Kyunki), Rishabh and Prerna (Kasautii), Vikram
and Monica (Saara Akaash) and Kavya and Anjali (Kkavyanjali). Who
deserves to win? That's for viewers to say but there's a charm about
Sumit-Kumkum (Hussain Kuwajerwala and Juhi Parmar) that is
intriguingly different and sets them apart from the rest. It's a
pleasure to see a jodi that is completely smitten with each other
and hasn't turned marriage into a mockery with double and triple
trips to the wedding mandap. Terrific chemistry too.
Oh, but where is the infamous Sujal (Rajeev Khandelwal, Kahiin To
Hoga) this year? Not a single nomination? Never mind that some of us
still can't fathom the hullabaloo surrounding this actor — wooden at
best — but the man does have a sizeable fan following and even
though he has left the serial a nomination or two was expected.
Clearly, Ekta Kapoor hasn't been twiddling her thumbs. Have clout,
will use.
