From 'Bidaai' to 'Gulaal' ' Star Plus bids farewell to one of its key shows
November 11, 10

exchange4media News Service

In the bouquet of shows that have been doing the trick for Star Plus in the last few months, 'Sapna Babul Ka Bidaai' is one of the oldest that by now, had made quite a place for itself in Star's content offering. Star Plus has decided that it's time to down the curtains on this drama and has announced a two-hour finale episode marking the end of the show, to be telecast on November 13, 2010. Replacing the show in the 9.00 pm band is a drama called 'Gulaal'.

'Bidaai' debuted in 2007 and played a key role in ensuring Star Plus' number one position against competition Zee TV at the time. In week 45, TAM data shows that 'Sapna Babul Ka Bidaai' had a TVR of 4.7 (C&S 4+ Hindi speaking markets) and was included in the top ten programmes of the week as well.

Star Plus would be experimenting in its 9 pm slot again. Explaining further on the channel's decision to do so, Anupam Vasudev, Executive Vice President, Marketing and Communication, STAR India, said, "Any change is a calculated risk. It is better to end the show when it is in its peak, rather than when it is declining."

But the channel seems optimistic despite replacing a popular show with a completely new one. Vasudev added that he was confident that 'Gulaal' would get the channel equal ratings, if not more. "We are not playing a weekly or a daily number game. We are building the channel through the shows," he pointed out.

He also did not rule out the possibility of having a second season of 'Sapna Babul Ka Bidaai', but said that there were no concrete plans as of now. "If you stop the show when it is doing well, there is a possibility that you can have a second season of the show, but you can't do that if the viewership of the show has been declining," he added.

The channel had experimented quite a bit with 'Bidaai' to appeal to the viewers and make sure they come back for a possible second season. Deaths of some of the key characters in the show or the wedding of some of the others have been the magic formulae that might get the viewer attention back to the screen.

While a second season plans are still in deliberation, the big question is whether 'Gulaal' would help Star Plus in ensuring its gap against the competition.

Thanks for the article rekha

i hope Star considers season two with the present cast for a year and then spin off into newer horizons with teh storyline...

I can't say much with Gulaal II like Rahil Azmi Talented actor and very good screen presense ..
Maansi Parikh have't seen much of her

Bidaai was a milestone show on its own and replacing that would definatly be a challege for Gullal

I hope Bidaaii season two will be back since there were a lot of loose ends left and they need to be completed.

thanks for the article..
a calculated risk...to replace bidaai for gulal..
now this show will have to capture the interest of maximum audiences to break bidaai records in trp or otherwise it cant compete with it..
reading this article wat a strategy of the channel..
a season 2 of bidaai..now i can say they calculated everything end bidaai in its peak so as when they come back the viewers interest is same and definitely the show a success..
"The channel had experimented quite a bit with 'Bidaai' to appeal to the viewers and make sure they come back for a possible second season. Deaths of some of the key characters in the show or the wedding of some of the others have been the magic formulae that might get the viewer attention back to the screen"..
reading this part a big proof the leap did wonders for them...
so now its obvious why the abrupt ending of the show with lots of potential track for future...
now hoping its the same casts of leap as viewers has accepted the change wholeheartedly and the storyline too..

@rekha..reading this article you already get it its a back up plan for STARPLUS..
meaning bidaai season 2..clever ones and we viewers is like so restless now when will it be back ...
thats their main point to keep the eagerness/interest of the audiences otherwise bidaai ending so abruplty leaving space for future tracks ..never..

If they are coming then come with the current one which I am not sure about eventhough I am hoping after the ending it had..but I think they will have generation leap with new cast which might have none of the actor we have seen so far in lead roles....Story was liked they may bring new actors with new story having similar BG..may happen or not!..God knows....want AnGini back so badly as it was not the expected end!

i don't know whether it was popular or not coz i never watched it before anmol/anamika track.....but what i know is that it was at it's best during anmol/anamika track and ragvir's wedding...it broke all the records during that time...
