UGADI GUDI PADWA NAB BARSHA BAISAKHI BIHU NAVREH VISHU
Ugadi is the New Year's Day for the people of Andhra Pradesh and for the people of Karnataka. Those who live north of the Vindhya hills observe it as "Barhaspatyamana". People living to the south of the Vindhyan hills observe it as "Sauramana" or "Chandramana".
Ugadi marks the beginning of a new Hindu lunar calendar with a change in the moon's orbit.
According to Chandramana, Ugadi is celebrated on the bright fortnight ('Shukla Paksha') of the first month ('Chaitra Masa') in the first season of the year i.e. spring ('Vasanta-Ritu'). As all these important elements are present, this day has special significance marking the commencement of a New Year.
It is believed that the creator of the Hindu pantheon Lord Brahma started creation on this day - "Chaitra Suddha Padhyami" or the Ugadi day. Also the calculations of the great Indian Mathematician Bhaskaracharya proclaim the Ugadi day as the beginning of the New Year, New month and new day.
The onset of spring also marks a beginning of new life with plants acquiring new life, shoots and leaves. The vibrancy of life and verdant fields, meadows full of colorful blossoms signify growth, prosperity and well-being."Ugadi Pachchadi" is one such dish that has become synonymous with Ugadi. It is made of new jaggery, raw mango pieces, Neem flowers and new tamarind. The inner significance of this preparation is to indicate that life is a mixture of good and bad, joy and sorrow and all of them have to be treated alike.
In Andhra Pradesh, eatables such as "Pulihora", "Bobbatlu" and preparations made with raw mango go well with the occasion. In Karnataka too, similar preparations are made but called "Puliogure" and "Holige". The Maharashtrians make "Puran Poli" or sweet 'Rotis'.
On this day, people chant mantras and the pundits make predictions for the coming year. Traditionally, the "Panchangasravanam" or listening to the yearly calendar was done at the temples.
Ugadi is celebrated with festive fervor in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. While it is called Ugadi in Andhra and Karnataka, in Maharashtra it is known as "Gudipadava".
The Rajasthani's as well as that of Maharashtrians New Year's Day, Gudi Padwa, celebrated on the first day of the Hindu month of Chaitra, is the beginning of Vasant or spring. This is also the beginning of the New Year for these communities.
The sun's entry into the zodiac sign of Aries marks the vernal equinox. The sun shines directly over the equator, days and nights are of equal length. To those from Maharashtrians Konkan coast, Gudi Padva brings the smell of the surangi flower and the overwhelming fragrance of the mango and jackfruit in bloom.
Traditionally, a Gudi Padva morning opens with the eating of the bittersweet leaves of the neem tree. Traditional Maharashtrians also make a paste of neem leaves and mix it with ajwain, tamarind and jaggery. The paste is then eaten by the entire family. The Neem paste is believed to purify the blood and build up immunity in the body against diseases.
A silk cloth is tied to a pole with a brass goblet or kalash atop it, which is supposed to drive away evil from the house. This is raised aloft and worshipped. Since this resembles a girl child, it is called as a "gudi" (derived from "gudiya" meaning a doll) It is for this reason also that this day is called as Gudi Padva (Padva means an auspicious occasion)

The Beginning of the Lunar New Year is celebrated in Kashmir as Navreh. This festival falls on the first day of the Chaitra Navratras (auspicious nine days of Spring) and start of a new year according to the Sapath Rishi Sambat. This usually comes on April 15th every year.
In Assam, the distinctive phases of an agricultural cycle is celebrated as the three Bihu festivals – the Bohaag Bihu, Kaati Bihu and the Maagh Bihu. The Bohaag Bihu also called the Rongali Bihu marks the sowing time, the advent of a new agricultural year. Gay spirit of spring marks the celebration of Bohaag Bihu which continues for several days.
The Nepalese follow the calendar system known as the Bikram Era or Bikram Sambat. The Nava Varsha marks the first day of the first month of the new year. This comes on April 15th every year.
