Pakistan match-fixing claims: timeline of country's turbulent cricket history

Forfeited Test - Aug 20, 2006
Angered after being accused of ball-tampering and penalised five runs by umpire Darrell Hair, Pakistan forfeited the fourth Test against England at The Oval after refusing to take the field in the evening session on day four in protest.

Lahore terror attack - March 3, 2009
Gunmen opened fire on the touring Sri Lanka team in Lahore, killing six security men and two civilians and injuring five players and fourth umpire Ahsan Raza. The repercussions saw Pakistan blocked from hosting World Cup matches and the Champions Trophy, with international cricket of any form yet to return to the country.

Tour of Australia - Dec 26, 2009-Feb 5, 2010
Pakistan lost every match - three Tests, five one-day internationals and a Twenty20 game - during an abject tour which prompted investigations by the International Cricket Council's anti-corruption unit and the Pakistan Cricket Board.

Attention focused in particular on the second Test in Sydney, when Australia were bowled out for 127 in their first innings and were just 49 runs ahead with two second-innings wickets remaining. But Michael Hussey made 134 not out, putting on 123 for the ninth wicket with tail-ender Peter Siddle to set Pakistan 176 to win - and they were rolled over for 139.

The PCB enquiry saw Mohammad Yousuf and Younus Khan banned indefinitely, Shoaib Malik and Rana Naved-ul-Hasan for a year and Shahid Afridi and the Akmal brothers, Umar and Kamran, fined and placed on probation for six months.

Afridi quits - July 16, 2010
Having made himself available for Test action on May 22, following a self-imposed four-year exile, Shahid Afridi was named as national team captain in all formats just three days later.

His reign in Tests would last just one game, though, as his poor personal performance in the first MCC Spirit of Cricket Test against Australia, a 150-run defeat on the neutral English turf of Headingley, prompted him to again retire from the five-day arena. Salman Butt was appointed as his successor the following day and led his side to victory in the second Test, with Australia bowled out for 88 in their first innings.

Squad upheaval - Aug 1, 2010
The first Test against England brought a 354-run defeat at Trent Bridge, and the team management responded in dramatic fashion by ending Yousuf's ban and also ditching spinner Danish Kaneria - who returned match figures of one for 171 - from the squad altogether to be replaced by teenage left-armer Raza Hasan.

Brief respite - Aug 17, 2010
England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Giles Clarke announced a rare shaft of light, with an ICC World XI confirmed to play in Pakistan.

Spot-fixing allegations - Aug 28, 2010
The News of the World newspaper allege several members of the team were involved in 'spot-fixing' activities during the fourth Test against England at Lord's. A 35-year-old man - not a member of the team - was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud bookmakers.

NDTV (London)
A lot of Pakistani cricketers are "just looking for money, women and food" and very few of them have any love for the game, claims the bookie arrested for alleged 'spot-fixing' in the England-Pakistan Test here.

Mazhar Majeed, the bookie who has made sensational claims of bribing Pakistani cricketers for bowling no balls in a sting operation by a British tabloid, claimed a lot of players were only bothered about money.

"You'll find there's only a few players who are genuine and who are actually here for the love of the game, and there's not many believe me. A lot of them are just looking for money, women and food," Majeed has been quoted as saying in the video tapes of the sting released by 'The News of the World'.

"How much they're getting paid is a joke. I came from a football background and I can see the difference in football and cricket. It's huge.

Majeed claimed cheating was not confined to match-fixing alone and that ball tampering had also become regular in the Pakistan team.

"I used to go out on the pitch to give the players their drinks. Whenever we couldn't get a wicket I'd have a lump of Vaseline on my hand. Shake their hand.

"They'd put it on one side of the ball and the ball would suddenly start in-swinging," he said.

Majeed revealed that he wanted Salman Butt to continue as captain for long as possible.

"I give out the information the night before or morning. What's going to happen at the end of the fourth day. But now we are not going to do any results for the next two games because we want Salman Butt to be captain long term," Majeed stated.

Following steps should be taken
- Ban Pakistan from playing cricket for 1 year
- Government should sack PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board) administration
- All players should be banned for life
- New team should be prepared once ban is removed. Yes they will be a weak team but who can be worst than the current lot
- Betting companies should ban any bet on Pakistan or its players
- Betting should itself be investigated. I dont know why it is legal.
- International law agencies should go beyond players and see who pays these players. Treat the disease not the symptoms.
- Involvement of other countries should be investigated. i know other boards cover up but i want them to be more strict
- i know as a Pakistani these steps are tough for my own country however i don't believe in wrapping myself in national flag. i think such people and feelings hurt our own country and are a sign of weakness. if there is problem in us then we have to treat it and not hide it.
Having said that, there is no hope as none of the above is going to happen lol.

As a British Pakistani, I am sick and tired of what these Pakistani players are playing at, they were showing pictures of Pakistani fans throwing tomatoes I would do the same. I'm sorry to say as a cricket fan these Pakistani players if they are found guilty they should be banned for life, I didn't expect Salman Butt or Mohammad Aamer but Mohammad Asif has already done damage before, I agree all the Pakistani players should be banned we need to recreate the team and prevent them from doing the bad things they have done. Why did we even get Waqar Younis as coach? These Pakistani players only work for the money, food and women? Tauba Tauba!!!!!!!!!!! More like they are bringing shame to Pakistan even more can't they see that Pakistan is already going through crisis, they shouldn't have done this betting scam at all.👎🏼

Soon there would be some folks who would blame ICC for the scandal and claim it is a conspiracy by Indian Govt(given Sharad Pawar is the ICC chief)

^LOL
News of The World seem to be great at this. First Higgins and now Pakistani cricket players. If the allegations are proven to be true then they've disgraced their entire nation. It's a shame it's at such a time when their country needs them the most because the country's rep isn't so great right now. :S
