Keeping Appearances
Oh he had finally made her agree. But why did he not feel the elation he should at his victory. He had thought for a few seconds, he had won, he had won her, her heart. She was his. She loved him. He could have happily jump off the cliff. He had felt at peace with himself, with the world. He had found his dream. He knew she loved him and she had affirmed it. He had felt his insecurities being assuaged finally. He had found his princess, she wanted him, just him, the way was, imperfection met with a perfect angel who was a combination of innocence and experience. She drove him wild.
And just like that she had snatched his dream away. She had called it duty, just a job. He wanted to die, just stop living. Why did she say that? He saw her tears, were they because he had forced her to admit or because she was agreeing when she did not want to and they were tears of frustration. He thought he understood her. He thought she was not like the rest of her species. But….was he wrong, once again?
He had needed the support of the pillar to brace himself, to come to terms with what he had heard. Just as he looked in her direction to see where she had run to, he heard her wince. Even in the darkness, with rain pelting behind him, he could hear her pain. He went up to her, and saw that it was because of him that she had been hurt, the pieces of bangles he had broken in his rage and anguish, had cut her sole. Again, he had to make up for what he had done to her. He bent to pick her up wordlessly, and she put her arm around his neck as if glad for his help, glad for a change to let him take the reins in their relationship. She seemed to be in agreement too quickly like she had resigned herself to him and being his fake fiance. How he detested that term? Fake! There was nothing fake about his emotions that he felt for her, they were strong, real and all-consuming that he could not see or hear anything beyond the incessant thrumming of his heart beats.
He picked her up in his arms, lost in her eyes, feeling her supplicant body fit to his. Her arms wound around his neck in a possessive manner. He walked as if this was his wedding night and he was carrying her over the threshold and into his bedroom to finally have her as she had been intended, for him to have and to hold forever, from this day forward.
He was rudely awakened from his open eyed dream by Daadima, who giving approval to his choice of bride made it all the more difficult for him to let her go. She signaled him to put her down but he was reluctant. He wanted her in his arms. She belonged there. He was willing to carry her like that to the end of the world, as long as she was with him, everything was possible, everything.
But he had to put her down, for appearances sake, she was his fiance not his bride, not yet anyway. He will work towards that soon. She had felt shy in front of Daadima he understood but why did she not let him leave her to her room after Daadima had gone. He had left her but oh so halfheartedly, he will call her tomorrow first thing in the morning he promised himself as he dreamily walked to his room.
She left his house, hobbling, wondering why she did not let him carry her to her room now, when she had had not protested earlier. She seemed to be contradicting herself she wondered as she walked towards the outhouse, leaving a trail of bloody print of her feet on the marble tiles of his home. An impression that she was her to stay, forever, unknown to her, an unusual grah pravesh into his home and his heart.
She kept musing about why she agreed to be his fiance when she wanted to leave him. Was it the Taveez that made her admit her feelings and then agree to become his fiance? Was she tired of trying to run away from him, him who was her destiny? Was she now going to believe that he is hers and hers alone and all the forces of this earth and beyond were in cohorts with each other to keep them together? Even the floozy Pari had understood the undercurrents between them and left, left Maan to her. Who was she to fight the unseen forces, the will of God so to speak? It would be better if she just gave in. But no, she will have to keep up the appearance of it being a fake engagement. She cannot let on to anyone, even Maan what she felt for him.
She slept with these uneasy thoughts. Dreams of him made her toss and turn, of him holding her seemed to soothe her uneasy soul and she woke up with a jolt to realize it was a dream and her phone was ringing.
She picked up and said, "yes," on hearing Maan's voice she said, "yes Maan," then remembered she is here to do a job so changed to "Sir, then, Maan Sir," only to hear him say that now that she was his fiance she should call him "Maan"
Well she always thought of him as Maan but to call him that, did he realize that she was not his fiance but a fake one and then chided herself, you don't forget to remember that you are not his real fiance just a fake one. Don't go reading more into it and let this heart of your flutter every time you take his name.
She tried it, "Maan!" and her heart skipped a beat. She said it again this time much softer than before almost a whisper, "Maan!" rolling the word on her tongue and through her lips, her eyes closing as if she was calling out his name in her need, need of wanting him to…..Kiss her…
She opened her eyes to find the object of her thoughts, sensual thoughts standing in front of her and asking her "Bolo Geet!" in a whisper that sent shivers of anticipation down her spine.
