Nothing Can Keep Us Apart

Part 35 - Ludhiana time pass

Darkness. A call in the night.

A tent. Leaves rustle. Animals howl.

Fear. Pain. Metal clashing.

Chod do

Run. Escape. Return. Fight.

Masked men. Forest.

Chod do

A girl in blue running.

Meine kuch galat nahi kiya

Garden. Yelling. Left alone.

Lonely dupatta, drifting in the wind.

Swords clashing. Cutting. Killing.

Too late. Too late. Too late!

No, Geet, no!

"Noooooo!"

Heart pounding, chest heaving, Maan sat straight up, thinking painfully, "My fault. It's all my fault! She almost died and it's my fault."

Geet who had been sleeping peacefully with her head on Maan's shoulder, until being jostled awake by his sudden movements, asked sleepily. "Maan, kya hua?"

"Kuch nahi. Tum wapas so jao."

Geet, though sleepy, could tell it was not nothing. Though the room was almost entirely dark, she could see that Maan was sitting up and breathing heavily, like he had been running a race. Geet struggled a little to sit up, as her limbs didn't want to move easily, and put her hand on his arm. She again asked him what was wrong, and when she got no answer, she looked more closely at him. Geet could feel the tension in him, as well as the sweat that he seemed practically drenched with.

"Maan, you seem very worried. What's the matter? Did you have bad dream?"

When Maan didn't answer, Geet reached across with her hand to take hold of his face and turned him to face her. "Maan, tell me what is wrong?"

Moving one hand to take hold of Geet's and the other to caress her hair, Maan answered in a choked voice, "I was too late. I was too late and you died. They killed you because of me. It's all my fault."

"Maan, what are you talking about? I'm right here. Nobody killed me. You weren't too late, you saved me. I'm only alive because of you. Our baby is alive because of you. Our lives being saved is your fault, nothing else."

As Geet spoke to Maan she rubbed his back soothingly. She could feel his breathing start to slow down and the tension in him ease a little. It made her sad to think that he was upset about things that happened to her over which he had no control. She didn't know what else she could say to get him to calm down. Finally she decided not to say anything.

Geet gently pulled Maan until he was laying down. Wrapping her arms tightly around him, she laid her head on his chest and whispered, "Go to sleep." Geet felt Maan's arms come slowly around her and then pull her close to him. Soon his breathing became regular, indicating he had found rest. Geet fell asleep listening to the steady beat of his heart.

The next morning, while Geet was freshening up in the bathroom, Maan got a call that put his mind at rest somewhat. The police inspector called to inform him about the investigation. It turned out that all of the men were Brij's friends. They had not been sent by Geet's family. One of them had heard the villagers talking about Geet's return and rounded up the others.

Maan wanted to know if the inspector was sure Geet's family was not responsible. The inspector replied that the Handa family was not even aware of Geet being in town until after she and Maan had left. Maan wasn't entirely convinced, but he thanked the inspector and told him to keep him informed.

Maan was relieved to discover that Geet's appetite had come back. In fact, from the amount of food she ordered from room service, he thought that she had more than made up for the lack of food the previous day. She didn't stop with breakfast, either. When they went to check out, Geet began complaining of craving jalebi, even though it had been only half and hour since they had finished breakfast. The plane was due until noon, so Maan had no problem with stopping in the hotel's restaurant before they left. While they were sitting, waiting for Geet's order to arrive, Geet asked Maan what they would do while waiting for the plane.

"I don't know. What would you like to do?"

Geet got a big smile on her face and pulled out a tourist brochure she had picked up at the front desk. "Look at this. Ludhiana has a zoo, Tiger Safari. I've always wanted to go see the tigers, but was never able to. Please, can we go? Please, please, please, please."

"Are you joking? No way!"

"Come on, Maan, what's the big deal? Don't tell me a sher like you is afraid of tigers."

Maan rolled his eyes, and replied, "I'm not afraid of tigers, I'm afraid of you. Trouble follows you like it was your middle name. If you think that I'm going to let you near that place, EVER, let alone when you're pregnant, then you are just insane!"

Geet pouted, but continued to look at the brochure. "Well, then let's go to the Nehru Rose Gard... uh... maybe not. Well.... Okay, I'm sure you'll agree to this one, the Gurdwara Charankanwal Sahib. We have enough time before we need to meet the plane, yes?"

Maan agreed, and told Geet that they would visit the gurdwara as soon as she finished her jalebis. When Geet's order came, she started munching happily, but made Maan share with her, as she felt strange eating by herself. It was something that she contemplated on, as they both went to the gurdwara together. Everything felt better, more special, when she did it with Maan. Geet couldn't say exactly why she felt that way, but she acknowledged to herself that Maan was the best life partner she could have, even if he did sometimes argue with and yell at her.

All to soon, it was time for Geet and Maan to leave. As they were boarding the plane, Geet asked Maan if he had informed Dadi that they would be returning home a day early. Maan answered that he had. Geet was concerned about how they would explain the earlier arrival. She didn't want to tell Dadi about the attack or have her worry about their safety. Maan explained to Geet that he had just told Dadi that their business had finished faster than they thought, and that he and Geet were missing her so much they decided to come back ahead of time.
