I disagree with Mithun's comments on music.
Modern film music is definitely different from what it was in the past. However, in no way is it superior or inferior in anyway. Music evolves. Styles change, fuse, merge and all sorts of sounds emerge.
Yes there were some definitely classic soulful melodies and soothing sounds that will forever be unparalleled. Sometimes modern music does tend to lack some of the softer styles and melodies. However, modern music does compensate with some unique things never done before.
In the past the Indian music industry was dominated by a few singers. These singers like Rafi, Kishore, Asha, Lata etc were brilliant and deserved every bit of fame and accolades they received. They were dedicated, they were versatile and were really amazing to give a unique sound to many different actors.
But in retrospect it was kind of unfair too. Monopolies of a few always leave out certain hidden talents. There is so much talent in India. So many good singers hidden in various parts of a country. Each with a unique voice and talent. Even in this season's Indian Idol - there is the earthy tone with Swaroop, the romanticism in Sreeram, the unique youth male voice of Shivam, the alto range voice of Bhoomi. When there are so many options, why fill all songs with the same singer. That is why music directors pick different singers for different songs.
Of course there is the bit of commercialization and making the buck over new talent. There is also the cost savings of using a not so expensive singer. But at the same time a system that encourages and gives opportunities to all sorts of talent cannot be dismissed so easily.
Although I am not sure why we are debating Mithun's career credentials here. As far as I know my acting career is a dud and forget awards, I don't even have a single film in my belt. When it comes to singing, I sound like a screeching banshee cat - yet here I am commenting on music and singing. We all have opinions. Mithun is nostalgic, I am not. Moreover, despite his endless array of cheese fests and the bizarre honor of bringing thrusts and gyrations to the family television - every now and then Mithun has done some commendable roles.
