Stars behind the camera of Sholay - Part 1

Everyone knows the actors in a film. Fame and celebrity status is a given when you have your face flashing on the screen and a million fans to your credit. But very often we tend to miss out the actual stars behind a film. Stars who always remain in the background and who are actually responsible in creating the blockbusters.

Let's take a look at all those technicians who had a big and small hand in making Sholay what it is even today.

Director: Ramesh Sippy

It's a given fact that everyone knows the legendary man who made Sholay. Born in Karachi the young director worked for 7 years as an assistant before becoming the director of Andaz, in 1969. Although this was only a moderate success, his second film Seeta Aur Geeta starring the 'Dream Girl' Hema Malini brought him huge success. In 1975 Ramesh Sippy directed Sholay which has been written down in the history of Hindi films with a permanent ink. He shot the film in 75mm as well as 35mm. That is one of the reasons why Sholay took two years to complete.

Producer: G.P. Sippy

Gopaldas Parmanand Sippy started his career with carpet selling and moved onto construction work. Belonging to a Sindhi family, GP Sippy, was making great buildings, when he began nurturing the idea to venture into filmmaking. He directed and produced his own movies. He began his career with the film Marine Drive in 1955. He was the Chairman of the Film and TV Producers Guild of India for several years. He produced his son's film Andaz, Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay, Sagar, Shaan, etc.

Music Director: R D Burman

Rahul Dev Burman aka Pancham Da is still a common name in every house that enjoys Bollywood music. The name 'Pancham' because as a kid whenever he cried it sounded like the fifth note (Pa) in classical music. He composed his first song when he was just nine years old for the film Funtoosh. He was famous for his unique, grunting bass singing style. In 1975, R D Burman created soundtracks Sholay in which he even sang the song 'Mehbooba mehbooba', picturised on Helen. He received a Filmfare nomination for playback singing and the Filmfare Best Composer award for Sholay.

Cinematographer (DOP): Dwarka Divecha

Born on March 19, 1918, Dwarka Divecha barely worked on 30 films. Sholay was his third last film. He even tried his hand at acting but has only one film to its credit, Singapore in 1960. He has given cinematography for prominent films like Jhuk Gaya Aasmaan, Amrapali, Khilona, Lal Pathar etc.

Writer: Salim Khan / Javed Akhtar

Javed was born as Jadoo Akhtar in Gwalior. He has to his credit some of the best works the industry has ever seen. Dialogues written by him are still livid in people's memory. Javed Akhtar has received about five National awards for best lyricist, and seven Filmfare awards for best script. Akhtar joined with his friend Salim Khan to develop the story for Adhikar.

Salim was born in Indore, he was initially hired as an actor in films like Teesri Manzil. But that career never lasted. He met Javed Akhtar on the sets of Sarhaadi Lootera. They were hired by G. P. Sippy's Sippy Films as resident screenwriters and produced the screenplays for successful films like Andaz, Seeta Aur Geeta, Sholay and Don. Together they were known as Salim-Javed who then split in the 1980's.

The Stars of Sholay - Part 2

Imaam Saheb played by A.K. Hangal
Take a look at the legendary characters that created Sholay... Continuing from The Stars of 'Sholay' - Part 1 we now bring you some more actors without which 'Sholay' is incomplete.

A man who started his filmy career at the age of 50 and has done over 125 films now that's a credit everyone would like to have on their resume. He started his Hindi film career with Basu Bhattacharya's 'Teesri Kasam' in 1966, and went on to play the quintessential meek and oppressed old man in innumerable Hindi movies. His own favourites are the roles he played in 'Sholay' and 'Shaukeen'. He was also seen in movies like 'Bawarchi', 'Avatar', and many more prominent ones.

Mausiji played by Leela Mishra
Leela Mishra popularly played the role of mother in many old movies of the 60's and 70's. Her first film in Hindi was 'Gangavataran' and her last was 'Aatank' in 1996. She played Basanti's Mausi in Ramesh Sippy's 'Sholay'.

Samba played by Mac Mohan
Mohan Makhijani, popularly known as Mac Mohan, came to Bombay with the intention to become a cricketer, but here; he joined theatre and finally became a Bollywood actor. Mac Mohan joined the film industry in the company of Vinod Mehra, who went on to become a lead actor. He started his Hindi film career as an assistant with director Chetan Anand, before making his debut as an actor in his film, 'Haqeeqat' in 1964. He was a well known Indian villain in Hindi language films. Although, he acted in over 190 films through the 1970's and 1980's with films like 'Don', 'Karz', 'Satte Pe Satta', 'Zanjeer', 'Rafoo Chakkar', 'Shaan' and 'Khoon Pasina', he is mostly remembered for his role of Sambha, the sidekick of dacoit Gabbar Singh in Ramesh Sippy's blockbuster 'Sholay'.

Ahmed played by Sachin
Sachin Pilgaonkar started his film career as a child artist in the Marathi film, 'Ha Maaza Marg Eekla' at the age of four and won the National Award. He had done about 15 films as a child artist. He made his first lead with 'Geet Gaata Chal' and received accolades for his performance. But he soon shifted to doing supporting roles. Sachin was then approached to do supporting role in 'Sholay' where he played Imaam Saheb's grandson.

Kaalia played by Viju Khote
Viju Khote is often seen in Marathi and Hindi films. He has acted in minor roles in more than 300 films. His first film in Bollywood was titled 'Anokhi Raat' where he played a bandit. Viju Khote is especially famous as the dacoit role Kaalia in 'Sholay' and Robert in movie 'Andaz Apna Apna'. He has acted in several comedy roles.

Jailor played by Asrani
Asrani made his acting break in a Gujrati movie opposite a budding Gujrati actress Waheeda. His first Hindi movie role was in 'Umang'- a low budget movie- which also had Subash Ghai and Paintal. Hrishikesh Mukherjee gave Asrani a role in 'Bawarchi'. And then films like 'Abhimaan', 'Chala Murari Hero Banne', 'Chupke Chupke', 'Choti Si Baat' followed. But his most remembered role - was the one where he played the Jailor in 'Sholay'. He was hugely talked about in the 1970's and was one of Amitabh Bachchan's close friends.

Dhanno played by a Horse
One would not count her as a prime character in the film but Basanti's character would be incomplete without Dhanno. We surely do not know what Dhanno did before 'Sholay' and if she was used in other movies. But post 'Sholay' she was a star in her own right.
