ROAD OF FAME - ANTARA MITRA

She is our personal favourite among present female singers; we would never get tired of listening to her.
An article & interview on GREAT
Antara Mitra

Date of Birth: July 10, 1987

Place of Birth: Maslandapur, West Bengal

Currently Residing in: Mumbai

Profession: Playback Singer, Bollywood.

Family: Father and Mother

Favourite Actress: Rani, Kajol, Ash & Preity Zinta

Her Idol: Asha Bosle

Motto in life : B+ 😊

Starting 06' till 15', Antara Mitra rocketed to stardom as one of the most versatile and technically gifted female singers in the music-reliant Indian film industry.Antara was equally at home singing romantic ballads and popular tunes, or artier, more complex fare; her skill at the latter eventually drew her into a creative -- and romantic -- partnership.

Born in Maslandpur, WB, she came from an artistic background: Antara's major source of inspiration is her father who is a music teacher. Her mother loved classical Indian music and dance, making sure that Antara began taking lessons at a young age. Although it would have made more sense for Antara to begin training in the Robindro Sangeet, her father was a music teacher of Hindustani style classical music, so Antara started out by learning Hindustani classical music Antara spent a great deal of time with her father who also influenced her to learn the Bengali style Rabindra Sangeet.

She won many awards in school and other competetions for the best singer and best classical artist and was popularly known as "Koyal". She was a darling of all the teachers. She proved all of them correct, by concentrating on her music. She was devoted to the music. Her regular schedule would be to wake up early, do the "riaz" first thing in the morning and then study for couple of hours. She also won the first prize in the all-Bengal music competition. She also participated in many stage shows.

In 2006, she got the first platform to project her talent nationwide. It was Indian Idol 2 competition. In Indian Idol 2, her performance in included songs like Rangeelare ,Ruki Ruki, Tu Ruttatho,Tere bina,Zara Zara ,Morni Bhagama, Bheri Piya , Mere hantoon Mein Nau Nau. Furthermore, Antara Mitra was called "Britney Spears" of India by Farah Khan, was known as Fav. Contestant of Anu Malik, also Ms. Poupular of Indian Idol. Antara's clostest friends from Indian Idol were Panna, Neha, Karunya and Meenal. Antara's Dream of meeting the Actors/Actress came True. She met Lots of Indian Actor and Actress and was shocked to see them. Though she could not win the title but she was in the final 5 and the only girl to be in Final 5. That gave her introduction to playback singing. She impressed the judges of the competition namely Anu Mallik, Sonu Nigam and Farah Khan. Anu Mallik was flattered on her tonal quality in the competition days itself.

After Indian Idol, young Antara made her first film recording, a Hindi duet with the legendary Sonu Nigam that was conducted by singer/composer Anu Mallik. Anu Mallik gave her a break in the movie"Umrao Jaan". Her voice was used against Aishwarya rai. It was a fantastic melody and emotional song "Shyam mose khelo na hori" for which she bagged her first Film Fare Award.

Antara moved with her aunt to Mumbai, not only to attend college (where she received a degree in English), but to attempt to break into the film industry as a singer. While at college, she met Nihira Joshi, who participated in SRGMP challenge 2005. She herself was a great singer and got a platform to get into Playback music from there. She introduced Antara to many other composers namely the mentors of the Challenge 2005, Himesh Reshammiya, Ismail Darbar, Aadesh Srivastata and Jatin ji and Lalit ji. Lalit ji had come out of the duo: Jatin-Lalith then. He decided to give a chance to new voice Antara, who was a very versatile singer. Himesh Reshammiya also loved Antara's voice quality and began using Antara as a vocalist for his live performances; soon. Additionally, through her aunt's contacts, Antara met composer Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, who dominated Indian film music in 2000's.

In her struggle phase, Anu Mallik backed her strongly. Legendary Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy gave her songs in a few films like Boxer, Chali jaise hawayein and a few other films. This opened up opportunities for Antara outside of the Anu Mallik camp, in which she had worked almost exclusively up to that point.

The early Anu Mallik films included Pyar Ke Raaste, Kamsin umariya, Ghar ke bahar, Rangeeli Duniya, Shadi ya barbadi and Ek Nai Paheli. The hits with Anu Mallik continued, with chartbusters like 'Kamsin umariya' (Kamsin Umariya), 'Kaisi yeh paheli' (Ek Nai Paheli). Then the sequel to Main hoon na came in which Antara rocked against Sonu nigam. While she broadened her horizons recording songs by other composers (as well as for television), she still continued to work with her early advocates, who provided most of her hits during this period. She scored huge hits with the tune "Main teri ho gayi" and the Anu Malik composition "Main hoon na" among many others.Antara, however, had achieved enough of a reputation that other filmmakers and musicians were eager to work with her.

2010 proved a watershed year for Antara's career: music director Anu Mallik staged a dazzling score with "Teri Meri Jodi", for which he used Antara as the only soundtrack vocalist. By the time the dust settled, Antara was arguably the most popular contemporary female vocalist in Indian film, landing several monster hits from Teri Meri Jodi (including "Kyon Naye hai raste" and "Savan pyaas jagaye") and winning several awards, including the coveted Filmfare award for Best Female Playback Singer for the song "Pyaar Hua" In 2011, Antara worked with the cream of Indian film music, including Anu Malik, Jatin/Lalit, A.R. Rahman, and Nadeem/Shravan, among many others; during 2012 and 2013, she extended her string of consecutive Filmfare awards to three, with the second and third coming for Yaroon ki dosti's "Mere Piya ka Ghar" and Kismat's "Aaj Main asmaan mein udti chaloon," respectively.

The hits kept on coming, and most fans agreed that the quality of her work was better than ever. In 2015, the virtuoso Shankar recruited Antara as a vocalist for his Shakti, coveting her versatility for a project dedicated to blending a tremendous variety of Asian and Western musics.

Antara recorded her 500th song recently just before her 28th B'day. There was a big party in her Juhu based apartment with all her II friends including Amey Date, Karunya, Panna Gill, Meenal Jain, Abhijeet Sawant, few name to name. Anu Mallik, Sonu Nigam and Farah Khan were also present as they were her first mentors and stepping stone in to Bollywood and the music industry. Her parents were present there and couldn't feel more proud on their daughter.

Filmfare Awards :

Filmfare 2007: Shyam mose – Umrao Jaan

Filmfare 2010: Pyaar Hua - Teri Meri Jodi

The Story of success

Place : Hotel Park, New York

Year : 2016

Meenal Jain is coming back after performing on one of the most happening shows of the world. As she appears on the lobby, a bunch of people flock towards her for autographs and congratulations for winning the one of the most prestigious awards in the singing Grammy Awards.

She somehow manages to go to her room when the phone rings and her secretary informs her that tickets for Mumbai is been booked and they have a flight next morning. She thanks the secretary and tells her to wake her up.

She tries and sleep but the sleep was a way away from her eyes. She goes near the window and looks up in the sky at the bright star. She sighs and thinks thatfs what she wanted to be shining like a star. Today she is one of the most sought after singer in Indian cinema. Almost every music director and producer as well as the actors wanted her to sing for them. She has achieved so much in such a short span of time. Every year she gets best female singerfs award which is a record in itself. She then smiles and thanks God and her family for supporting her and believing in her.

She thinks to herself that it all started on that day when she decided to go to her city of dream Mumbai and in front of her eyes flashback comes and she thinks about her past

Meenal Jain has always lived life on her own terms. When she was 11 years old, her elder sister, a trained classical dancer, was practicing to a song 'Piya Tohse Naine Laga Re'.

The song caught the attention of young Meenal so much that she wouldn't stop singing it and was even invited on stage by composer Ravindra Jain who had come to as a chief guest at her sister's show. A few words of appreciation from Ravindra Jain and Meenal knew what she would aspire for in life.

With the intention to become a singer, at the age of 11, Meenal urged her parents to allow her to enter Suresh Wadkar's training institute in Mumbai where music was taught in the guru-shishiya tradition.

But after three months of rigorous training here, Meenal couldn't take it any longer. She was so homesick that she had to leave the institute and go back to Indore. Her health suffered, but not her spirit.

Although her health deteriorated but not her spirit, she requested her parents to move to Mumbai so that she can pursue and chase after her dream of learning music. Her parents understood her passion and dream of learning classical music. So the yearning to learning brought her to the city of dreams Mumbai.

Life was not going to be easy for her then. She felt so miserable on committing, what she considers, the biggest mistake of her life. .

She came back to Mumbai in three days flat but didn't go back to the institute. Instead, she started learning music on her own from different people whilst completing her studies too.

An extrovert by nature, Meenal aims to make a new friend everyday. In her free time, she listens to Asha Bhonsle, adores Sunidhi Chauhan and dreams of Bryan Adams. Sometimes she also finds herself playing a game of basketball or badminton, depending on her mood.

Back to the hotel room she thinks about the moment when everything was so different. There was a moment when she wasnft very sure about what will happen next. But she was sure that her attitude of being positive will take her a long way, even that time. It was year 2005.

When one day her mother came running towards her with a paper in her hands. She cried with excitement e beta, there is a very good news for youf. Meenal said ewhat is it mamma.f Then her mother told her about the auditions for Indian Idols and encouraged her to take part in it. She decided to take part in it. When she reached there, she saw some thousand, two thousand people are in the queue in front of her. She prayed to God that he must give her one chance to show her talent. And God indeed heard her. She got a chance to sing in front of Sonuji, Anuji and Farahji. After the audition she came back and gave a big hug to her mother and was so emotional that couldnft tell her that she has been selected. And that day was the turning point of her life.

For Meenal Jain, Indian Idol was an opportunity to gain popularity, something that she had always dreamt about. She wanted to be known the world over with people admiring her. But this dream girl also knew that the road to Indian Idol wasn't too easy. She gave lot of very good performances. And Judges really liked her. Anuji and Sonuji really appreciated her talent. But in the sixth gala finals she could not get enough votes and had to leave the dream of been an Indian Idol. But she accepted her defeat in a very dignified way and in front of crores of viewers she promised that I WILL BE BACK WITH A BANG!!!!

She then concentrated on all the comments she had got from three judges and tried and improvised on it. Soon because of her popularity and talent she got her first big break. In the past she had sung some remixes but they were not enough to give her a recognition she desired. But this project she got was from very big banner and Ismail Darbarji himself had offered her a song in his movie. So she got her first real break. Then Anu ji fulfilled his promise and gave her a bigger platform and she along with Antara was the lead female singers in three of his movies. That year she also got the Filmfare award for best female singer. After that there was so stopping back. She got offers from movies as well as stage shows. Soon she came up with her own album which was an instant hit. She indeed came back with the bang.

While she was still thinking the phone bell rings . Meenal picks up the phone and secretary tells her that itfs their flight time. After keeping the phone back she says to herself g yes! I am going to Mumbai my city of dreamh.

Two days back, Indian Idol 2 finalist, Neha Kakkar, performed in a stage show for AIDS day.

She rocked the show and set the stage on fire. She sang her favourite song "Mann Ki Lagan" from the film Paap. Then she sang her new album song Dil Aur Pyar which goes like this…

Dil Aur Pyar.

Mangta Hai Yaar.

Hum Hai Dildar.

Na Kare Inkaar.

Dil aur pyar.

Then she sang Tinka Tinka, Seekh Le, Mehboob Mere, Zubi Zubi, and other songs in her other albums. She also sang the classic hit "Chandni Rattein" and also sang a Punjabi Song "Dildarian." Then they had a special prayer for all the people who have AIDS and there was a slideshow about it.

After 5 minutes she got a call from Anu Malik, Farah Khan, & Sonu Nigam. They told her that they were making a new movie directed by Farah, music by Anu, and songs sung by Sonu. They told her that they wanted her to sing one of the songs with sonu nigam. Neha screamt with joy and said Jai Mata Di! Then they gave her a surprise and came from backstage on the stage.

The last song was sung by Neha, Amey, Karunya, Meenal, Panna, Antara, Sagar, Sandeep, Yashashree, Ravi, Anuj, Jolly, and Monali. They sang Woh Pehli Baar. Fans took her autograph, were happy, and went home.

Neha was delighted and said that this was her greatest birthday party ever!

Then after the show…many journalists came to take Neha's interview about where was she all these years and why did she perform in this stage show...

She replied," After i was voted out from Indian idol, I was interested in computers but I got recognition in the media and also received many singing offers so I decided I'd become a singer. But I believed I was too young and wanted to learn more in music. So after completing my 12th grade, I went abroad (UK) to learn more of western music. Also I had taken dance lessons to improve my performance. Then after 5 years I came back to India and received training under Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (my favourite artist) in classical and instrumental music.

Now I perform in stage shows with them in instrumental music because it gives me peace. But for AIDS day I was asked by Sony to perform in a charity and I agreed because it's for good cause, it was my birthday, and with that I met all my dear and near friends.

I wanted to thank Sony entertainment who gave me such a wonderful platform so that we strangers could present our talent in front of public. They have given people the right for their talent. You have seen in all these years, so many talented singers and performer are coming in this world.

One good news is that I'm getting married next month, to Ryan D'souza (the person I love from 7 years. I had met him in UK. He is also trained in western music."

Journalists asked Neha if she wants to say anything to the janta.

Neha said, "Thank you for all the support you have given me in music. Hope you like all my songs and listen to them everyday!"

The End😊

Road of Fame - NC Karunya

Name: NC Karunya

Date of Birth: March 1, 1986

Place of Birth: Hyderabad

Currently Residing in: Mumbai

Education: B-Tech (Third Year) in Electronics & Communications

Family: Father (NC Madhu), Mother(NC Janaki) & Younger Sister (NC Deevena)

Born in one of very well known families for music in Andhra, Karunya displayed traits of a

great singer. He always had his sights set high. He was won several competions in the

childhood itself and proved to be a wonderful prospect for the future.

Hi Parents N.C. Madhu and N.C. Janaki noticed how good a singer was Karunya and started

training him at home from 5 yrs age.

From age 14 Karunya was trained by N C Madhu's brother NC Murthy a well know carnatic music

trainer.

While Karunya always has shown a lot of potential, it was not until he saw Abhijith Sawant

and wanted to become the agla indian idol.

He shot to fame with a stupendous performance of Sukhwinder's song from chalte chalte " Layi

vi na gayi"

All wasn't rosy though... Selection into the top28 had some tensed moments for Karu as he

was not part of the top 47 and was placed in an additional room for one more screening.

Thoug he gave an incredible display would I even go to the Gala's was his thought during

Piano round results, seems so far away yet the days of uncertainty were so real.

He slowly started growing in confidence as the galas went by started earning the accolades

of one and all.

Though he didn't get all he wanted from Indian Idol, he gained a lot of fans, won a lot of

hearts and Sonu repeatedly called him as his fav.His four close friends Meenal, Sagar ,

Monali and Antara expected him to go all the way.

His best friend at Indian Idol Meenal who later married his toughest rival at the

competetion

His toughest rival at Indian idol and later in the music world Amey Date

As soon as his Indian Idol days are over , all the hardwork he put at Indian Idol paid off

though.
He started getting offers from well know music directors that have seen him in the show,

like saleem-suleiman, Karan johar signed him up for one of his new movies.
First year as a play back singer and a pop artist was phenominal for Karu. He won a filmfare

award, a debutant best singer award on MTV and his first album which included a couple of

Punjabi numbers "kuch gal kar oye" became a tremendous success.

His fan fallowing grew at an unprecedented pace.

The next few years have included a phenominal journey from 2006 he kept winning MTV awards

and filmfare awards every alternate year, Amey and Antara were couple of his toughest

competetors not just in Indian Idol, but in later stages in singing, but they all became

best buddies as Amey soon married Meenal one of their co-contestants on the show.
He did several shows and is such a crowd puller that all those shows have been tremendous

success.

Karunya has earned a crowning glory this year, by winning a grammy award for his album

nachley kudiye made in 2016.

This article is a small tribute to this legend in Indian music industry NC Karunya

Name: AMEY DATE

Date of Birth: March 31, 1979

Age: 36 (10 years from now)

Place of Birth: Mumbai

Currently Residing in: Mumbai

Education: Undergraduate from Ruperal College, Mumbai

Family: Parents are separated. Has elder sister, Aparna

Guru: Suresh Wadekar

Amey sat cross-legged on the plush blue carpet of his music room. His four-year-old son Abhay sat across from him with an eager expression on his impish face. Abhay wanted to be just like his father and enjoyed watching him practice everyday. In between the two was an old harmonium; the same one Amey had practiced on for years when he was a student learning music from his guru Suresh Wadekar ji.

Nowadays Amey is a guru to many aspiring singers who are desperate to learn everything that had made him so famous. But what made Amey particularly satisfied was that now he was able to share his knowledge with Aniruddh, his close friend Connie's son. It was after all a very small price for all the support Connie had given him and his fans during his rise to fame.

But the fame didn't come easy. And it wasn't easy to teach ambitious, impatient students that it takes much more than a good voice and proper 'sur' to become a star. It seemed impossible to impart his 36 years of knowledge and experience in one-hour sessions with his students.

It was only after years of hardships that Amey rose to heights of success, his talent got recognized, his voice was appreciated, and he became someone whom everyone wanted to be; he became a national icon. Ten years ago, when he lost the Indian Idol title, he had known he would eventually overcome the setback just as he had after placing second in the SaReGaMa mega finals in 1998. His renditions of Madhuban mein Radhika, Thaiya Thaiya and Parda Hai in SaReGaMa had garnered him praises from an elite panel of judges including the likes of Zakir Hussein and M.S. Subalakshmi. Amey knew he had the potential in him and was determined to prove Pandit Jasraj's statement about Amey being a moti ('pearl'), right.

His exit from Idol had resulted in an offer from music director/Idol judge Anu Malik. Amey thought this was the break he had been waiting for. Though some critics appreciated Amey's voice, the song's poor lyrics and unoriginal music made it a failure and Amey was soon forgotten. People vaguely remembered his name as a contestant who had once brought glory to the Indian Idol stage with his superb performances and was now a lost talent.

Amey's friend, Avadhut, who owned a recording studio, tried to help out Amey by arranging meeting with several music directors but all Amey got was empty promises.

Following the Anu Malik disaster, Amey was in despair thinking that his talent would be wasted just like so many other people in India. But he wasn't completely shattered. His mother, Daksha Date and his elder sister Aparna, were and still remain the strongest pillars in his life, and they always supported him. Even though his parents were divorced, Amey felt, his mother more than made up for the absence of his father.

A singer herself, Daksha encouraged him from a young age to participate in small singing shows and background choruses.

Daksha remained the most important woman in his life even when he got married 3 years after Idol, to one of the Idol contestants, and Amey's favourite female singer, Meenal Jain.

It seemed that after his marriage, things started to fall into place for Amey. It was always Amey's dream to find the perfect person to spend the rest of his life with, and he had found that perfect someone in Meenal. Meenal and Amey had many of the same tastes- a passion for music, a great love for nature and trekking, an addiction to the Discovery Channel, a never-ending appetite for seafood, and an obsession for card games. Amey felt that at least one aspect of his life had worked out and he was immensely happy. This happiness and the desire to fulfill the rest of his old dreams fuelled Amey's ambition once again to overcome his failures and prove his detractors wrong.

It just so happened that soon after, Amey received an invitation to attend the album release party of his fellow Indian Idol contestant and winner of the competition- NC Karunya. Karunya was still doing well and was already on his fourth album. Amey was hesitant at first but his wife convinced him that it was a good opportunity to meet people. Little did Amey know that waiting to meet him at the party was the most popular music director duo, Vishal-Shekhar. They churned out hit after hit on the Bollywood music scene and were looking for the perfect voice to give playback for the hottest young actor around. And they found that voice they were looking for when Karunya made Amey sing "Laga Chunri" and "Tadap Tadap Ke Is Dil Se" in the party. Vishal-Shekar knew they had found the perfect playback singer.

From that day on there was no looking back for Amey. He went from being an obscure ex-contestant on Indian Idol to becoming the biggest craze in India. He recorded a solo song titled 'Aasman Se Ooncha'. While the slower version of the song was critically acclaimed, the remix version was what rocked every single party. Playback offers started pouring in and private albums were recorded. But Amey thought it would be better to be more cautious in his decisions. He became extremely careful when selecting from the offers because any mistake at this stage could cost him the hard-earned stardom; he had to wait for the right opportunity.

And that opportunity came in the form of AR Rehman. Rehman was looking for the right voice to match the likes of Nihira Joshi for the song 'Zindagi Ke Rahi Hai', but no one fitted the bill. Rehman was beginning to doubt if he could ever find the right voice, until he had heard the winner of the 'RD Burman Upcoming Music Talent award' crone to a medley of songs, ranging from Atif's 'Juda Hoke bhi' to Sonu Nigam's 'Tanhayee' to Hariharan's 'Tu hi re'. Rehman had heard Amey's song for Vishal-Shekhar before, but Amey's performance in the concert spoke volumes of his versitality and strength in classical singing- a quality Rehman had been looking for.

Rehman invited Amey to the studio along with Nihira. The moment the first note was struck, Amey knew that this song would be a rage; he knew that it would take him closer towards his dream of becoming a great playback singer. And he was proven right. The trio of Rehman, Nihira and Amey had proven to be deadly. Amey won awards left, right and centre for his singing; the whole country was suffering from a highly contagious disease--Ameyria. Some raved about his looks, some raved about the classical touch in his voice, and others raved about his versitality. He was also recently felicitated with a padmashree title by the President of India for his valuable contribution to India's musical heritage. He had become a star.

The music room Amey and his son were sitting in had shelves lined with these awards, his albums and posters. He looked around and wondered how one person could be so lucky to have gained so much love and success. Just then his son Abhay banged his tiny hand on his fathers knee and said "Papa, gaon na?" Amey smiled and began singing for his youngest student…"Tum jo mil gaye ho…jaahan mil gaya"

He Was Late But An Idol Nonetheless

A Legend
