Plane crash survivor recalls escape

From Sara Sidner, CNN
May 24, 2010
Mangalore, India (CNN)
-- Sabrina Nasrinhuq hunkered behind a tree, steps away from the twisted metal remnants of the Boeing 737 passenger jet, screaming for help
Minutes before, it was so dark and quiet that she thought she was asleep. Then the pain started. Her foot was trapped. She wrestled it free.

"Either someone pushed me out of the plane, or I jumped out, and then I landed on the forest floor," she told CNN Sunday while lying in a hospital bed, where she is receiving treatment for more than a half dozen injuries.

A group of farmers heard her cries and pulled her away from the wreckage, she said. As they climbed over tree roots and rushed her to safety, the plane burst into flames behind them.

Nasrinhuq is one of only eight people to survive one of India's deadliest plane crashes in more than a decade. Air India Video says 158 of the 166 people onboard Flight IX-812 were killed. Investigators are trying to determine why the flight, which originated in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, overshot the runway at Mangalore International Airport, hit a boundary wall and crashed into a valley early Saturday morning.

Nasrinhuq said the plane seemed to be seconds away from a safe landing when passengers realized something was seriously wrong. Rather than slowing down, she said, the plane seemed to speed up.

"Everything was shaking," she said.

Nasrinhuq raised and lowered her bandaged arm as she described the plane's plunge into the valley.

She said she called her mother after the crash.

"I just told her, I must be really lucky, and God must have something specific in mind for me later on," she said.

Nasrinhuq, who is in her final year of medical school, said one thing is certain.

She now knows what it's like to be a patient, so she can be a better doctor.

Until the black boxes are recovered, nothing can be said. But first step towards disaster was altitude problem., Miscalculation and error. The Boeing 737 involved in this accident is no more than 3 years old and is equipped with fully computerised landing assist system, which assists the pilots to a great extent.
The pilot landed in the middle of the runway, precious distance lost, and it skidded off as a result of weak brakes or distance not sufficient for braking.
The biggest culprit-excessive jet fuel, which sparked off a fire. In fact, the plane was loaded with more fuel than probably required, maybe because it had to fly back to muscat. If the fuel had been considerably less, than even if the plane crashed, many, many people could have survived. Many people died of smoke annihilation, as toxic fumes from jet fuel can kill in seconds.
Tyre burst can also be added as was told by one injured passenger. But a question remains-did the mangalore had an ILS which could have guided the plane to safety? Or did it lack some basic safety structure and this disaster was waiting to happen?
or did heavy rains can also be added? Only time will tell, and hope something positive comes out of it.
May the departed souls RIP.

Such small runways on hilly slopes are too dangerous for larger planes. It is made worse where pilots are inexperienced. Possible that visibility could also bad.

Reports says 6000mtr visiblity is there...I think 6km visiblity is enough to land a plane...This airport is located on top of a hill, with the runway landing approaches leading up to the extreme edges of the hill sides and thus called a table top runway...pilot error can not ruled out, Cos I know normally when ever any craft leaves gulf, immediately the air hostesses and otehr crew found busy in serving liquor, I assume the pilots also drunked ,bt ya we cant predict anything!!😕
