Chapter 1 : Iss Pal Main hoon...
"Any messages for me, Sylvie?" Nupur rushed past the receptionist's desk, pacing to her office as she was running behind schedule and didn't wait to hear Sylvie's "Yes Maam, someone's here to see you."
She had almost breezed through the waiting area outside her office, when the person sitting on the sofa caught her eye. He was wearing shades, even inside the office, and was browsing through some fashion magazines, a look of mild distaste on his face. She narrowed her eyes and then let out a loud gasp.
"No way!!! Monkey Mayank!!!" She exclaimed loudly, totally forgetting where she was. Her subordinates giggled as they wished her good morning and walked past. The guy was now standing, and had taken his shades off. He had a strained smile on his face, but the affection in his eyes was truly genuine.
Ignoring everyone, she literally ran upto him and gave him a tight, bear hug. Their very own signature hug!
"By God!!! I cant believe this... What are you doing here, in Mumbai? U were in New York, last we spoke...How long has it been???" She began her non-stop questions, that Mayank always referred to as her "third-degree" interrogation.
"Whoaa!!! Relax, Jhansi ki rani... Take a deep breath...Paani piogi?" Mayank chuckled as she shook her head and hit his arm affectionately. "Let's go somewhere, and I'll answer every question of yours. Is that good?" He attempted to calm her down.
"Obviously!! Itni mushkil se toh tum haath lage ho..." She grinned and linked her arm with his and pulled him inside her cabin, stopping on her way to tell her secretary to cancel all her morning appointments.
"Nupur, this is not the right – "
"No lectures on professionalism, pleaseeeee..." Nupur cut him midway as she pulled him inside and grinned sheepishly at him on seeing the cluttered state of her office and rushed forward to clear the mess.
Mayank chuckled as he took in the sight. Just as he had thought. Nupur Bhushan was still the same – caring yet careless, responsible yet irresponsible and of course, as chirpy and talkative as ever. Thank God, some things never change. Like their friendship. Despite them passing out of college for over 7 yrs now, they had still managed to keep it firmly intact, despite the distances. He smiled as he sat down and took in everything about the office.
Nupur was working with a reputed PR company and the posters of her various clients adorned the soft boards covering the parallel lengths of the walls. A To-do chart, with a number of jottings and cuttings, was placed at an arm's distance. A huge pile of files sat at her desk. Papers were strewn all over her desk.
A photo frame dangled precariously towards the edge of the table. He reached for it and turned it around to face him. It was their gang's photograph, taken on their graduation day. He traced his fingers over the merry faces as he went thru the pic. Seeing Benji, his arm stealthily around Diya, made him smile wider. Then stood Uday, aka Dodo, who was eyeing Benji's hand, instead of looking into the camera. Then the two lovebirds, Samrat and Gunjan, smiled at the camera, their palms entwined together. Nupur stood next to Gunjan, making horns behind her head with two of her fingers and smiling so wide that her eyes were almost shut. Mayank chuckled at her – ever the prankster, that's Nupur for you. And there he was – next to Nupur, smiling then, as he leaned towards Riya, who was leaning back into him.
Riya – her face brought in so many memories – more bad than good. He attempted to block them out.
"Hellooo?? Back to Earth, Mayuuuu..." Nupur teased him and he gave her the pleasure of it by protesting instantly.
"Please Nupur, not the name atleast." He protested.
"Acha fine... So I order the usual for you na?" She asked as she dialled her Secy's number.
"The usual, as in?" He tested her.
"Paneer pakode...What else??" Mayank made a disgusted face and she laughed hard. "Just joking, baba!! Hello, yes Rosie, send in two cups of coffee and a sandwich. Quick!"
Mayank smiled. Finally, Nupur sat down at her seat. "So....." She said.
"So what?" Mayank raised his eyebrow.
"Arey so tell me... When did you get back? For how long are you going to be here?? And how are Riya and Aaki???"
Mayank interrupted before she could add any more questions, "I'll answer one at a time – I got back yesterday evening; I don't know for how long I'm going to be here...maybe forever!" Nupur squealed at that but he carried on "Aaki is doing just fine... In fact, she starts school this year..." He smiled tenderly at Nupur's excited expressions "And, Riya and I got divorced." He finished quietly.
An awkward silence hung in the room as Nupur stared at him, serious for the first time since the morning. Mayank twitched impatiently in his seat.
"Umm, Nupur, you have to give a reaction..." he said lamely, afraid that he had done the right thing or not by coming to see his best friend and giving her this shock.
"I'm so sorry, Mayank..." She finally managed to whisper "I had no clue you guys were..." She searched for a word "unhappy!" She finished softly.
Mayank shrugged, trying to be show indifference, but Nupur clearly saw through this facade of his. She always did. She reached across the table and placed her hand on his and squeezed it lightly. He looked up at her. She simply nodded. He knew what that meant – I'm with you!
"Thanks!!" He whispered.
Their coffees arrived, breaking the moment. They sipped at their coffees silently, not knowing what to say. Nupur stirred the coffee with her spoon listlessly thinking about what Mayank had just told her. She thought of her equation with Riya. There had always been some sort of an invisible tension between the two of them; her friends teased her, saying it was because of her possessiveness for Mayank, but she knew different. She knew that this girl was just not the right one for him. But he seemed happy, rather, as she had regrettably admitted to herself, she seemed to keep him happy. So she didn't really object when he had called her five years ago, saying that they had decided to get married. She knew Mayank had an idea about how she felt, but they preferred to keep this issue aside.
All of a sudden, Nupur blurted out. "So Riya did turn out to be a bitch after all, didn't she??"
Mayank looked up, startled. To her surprise, he started to laugh and laugh real hard and within seconds, both of them were laughing hard at her tactless comment!
"Nupur..." He said, wiping his eyes, "You have got to be the first one to have acknowledged that in front of me, on my face!!!" He shook his head "God, seems ages since I laughed so much..." He admitted regretfully.
"No worries... Main hoon na!!" Nupur regained her nautanki mood and winked at him. He grinned and then turned serious, his eyes lost as he sighed.
"I almost feel guilty for laughing at this..." Mayank said.
"Almost being the keyword..." She added. Both laughed.
"Anyway, so what happened to bui and her relentless plans to get you married?" He asked, as he bit into the sandwich "This is good!" He commented, pointing towards it.
She smiled "Oh she gave up 2 yrs ago... Since then, she's been lamenting over how I'm going to die an old, lonely spinster..." She rolled her eyes "Look who's talking..." She added in an undertone.
"Nupur!!!" He spoke, disapproval in his tone.
"Sorry, I'm sorry...I didn't mean that...It's just that it gets so annoying at times!!" Nupur complained, gesturing wildly with her hands "I mean isn't there anything more to life than getting married?? By God!!" She grumbled.
Mayank smiled, clearly enjoying the situation and her irritability. "Is this the Nupur Bhushan I knew?? The one who dreamt of getting married to her Rajkumar??" He faked a look of total shock.
She smiled, "I was so hilariously dumb then, hai na?" She giggled "Why did you put up with my non-sense?" She asked him.
He shrugged nonchalantly "I thought it was really cute...That's why!"
Nupur looked at him. He was sipping at his coffee and looking at the photo. She smiled softly at him. Her best friend was back. And with him, her dilemma, her feelings, everything that she had long locked in a dark corner of her mind and heart, came rushing back. She sighed and then smiled as Mayank caught her eye.
