The Summer Fling (MayUr) PT1 [Dedicated to the MRS. SHARMAS]

Summer vacations had finally arrived for Excel College, Mumbai. All the students were excited to finally get away from their books and enjoy the numerous parties, outings and what not! All except one, Nupur Bhushan.

Nupur Bhushan loved her books, classes, lectures and tests. In short, she was a nerd, but a fun loving nerd. She was well liked by everyone for her outgoing, yet reserved personality. She didn't warm to people easily, but when she did, she was a ball of fun.

"Nupur!" her best friend Samrat greeted. "Vacations have started and you are still with your books!"

"Books are my best friends Samrat," Nupur said, shaking her head.

"I thought I was your best friend," Samrat pouted.

"Same," Nupur said.

"Oh god don't compare me to your books," Samrat said. "Now come out."

"No need Samrat," Nupur said. "I love the library."

"Come," Samrat said, dragging her out.

***********************************************************************************

Samrat drove to the Rose Garden nearby. It contained a cafeteria too, which made it their automatic, out-of-college hand out location. Their friends were already waiting for them there. Samrat and Nupur got out and went to them.

"Hey Sam! Hey di!" Gunjan, Nupur's younger sister and Samrat's girl friend greeted. "Since when did you start hanging out with my boyfriend?"

Offo Gunjan," Nupur said. "Why would I be interested in your boyfriend? And that too Samrat?"

"What's wrong with me?" Samrat asked.

"Nothing sweetheart," Gunjan said, shyly.

"Aw you are the best," Samrat said, pinching his girl's nose.

"Cut the mush crap out guys!" Nupur snapped. "And what was the purpose of dragging me out my library?"

"You badly need a boyfriend," Nupur's cousin, Dia commented.

"Yes," Samrat agreed. "And that's why we are here!"

"To discuss about my non-existent love life?" Nupur asked. "I'm so out of here."

"To discuss about your upcoming love life," Samrat said.

"W H A T?" Nupur spelled out. "You are not freaking serious!"

"Oh yes I am," Samrat said.

"Listen many guys have tried," Nupur said. "But all these Mumbai boys-"

"Have failed to impress the great Nupur Bhushan," Samrat said. "But the guy I'm talking about is from the IT city, California."

"You want me to get into a relationship with a firangi?" Nupur asked. "You have officially lost it!"

"My cousin, Mayank Sharma," Samrat said. "He should be here any moment."

"I don't want a relationship Samrat," Nupur groaned.

"A summer fling?" Samrat asked. "Girl you need to have fun!"

"I have fun with you guys," Nupur said. "And a summer fling...it sounds just so...ew."

"Nothing disgusting about it babes," Samrat said. "You need a man in your life."

"You are there na?" Nupur asked.

"He is my boyfriend!" Gunjan said possessively.

"My best friend," Nupur said.

"Don't fight over me," Samrat said. "Anyways it's just temporary Nupur."

"I don't like temporary stuff Samrat," Nupur said.

"You will love Mayank," Samrat said. "He's a great guy!"

"Di give it a shot na," Gunjan said. "It would be so much fun then. The four of us can go on a double date!"

"Oh alright," Nupur said. "But one date in library...pucca."

"Done," Samrat said, with a smile.

***********************************************************************************

Nupur and the gang were waiting for Samrat's cousin, Mayank Sharma to arrive. Mayank Sharma stayed in Los Angeles, California. It was an Indian based college, so he was having summer holidays at the same time as his cousin in India. It was his first visit to India.

"I will be right back," Samrat said.

"Where are you going?" Gunjan asked.

"Mom texted me saying Mayank is here," Samrat said. "Be right back."

Samrat ran off, leaving an excited gang behind.

"Di get ready to meet your first boyfriend," Gunjan teased.

"Shut up Gunjan," Nupur said.

But the reality was that she was nervous. Nupur never felt nervous about anything. She was always confident, always ready to face the world with smile on her face, then why was she so nervous?

***********************************************************************************

Mayank felt nervous as he walked towards the cafeteria with his cousin Samrat. He had been told a lot about this Nupur girl. From what he deciphered, she seemed to be a great, fun-loving girl. He had never been in a relationship before and hoped that his first relationship, or summer fling went well. Samrat had told him not to fall for her, because it would only last for two months.

"Ready?" Samrat asked.

"As ever," Mayank said as they entered the cafeteria.

***********************************************************************************

As the door entered, Nupur felt a gush of wind blow her hair onto her face, blinding her for a second. She pushed it away and looked at Samrat and a man next to him. The man was extremely handsome, so much that, the word handsome was just an understatement. She saw that he had a nervous smile. They walked over to her and the gang. Samrat sat next to Gunjan while the man sat next to her.

"Guys meet my cousin brother Mayank Sharma," Samrat said. "And also guys, introduce yourselves."

"Hey all," Mayank said, flashing a smile. "I'm Mayank Sharma, Samrat's cousin from his mother's side. I stay in Los Angeles, California. This is my first visit to India and I hope to make some great friends."

"Hi I'm Nupur Bhushan," Nupur said. "Samrat's best friend."

"And your future girlfriend," Samrat said.

Nupur felt blood rising up her cheeks and she looked down.

"Dude," Mayank hissed. "Don't mind him. He can be a bit of an idiot."

"Yeah," Nupur said.

"I'm Gunjan, Samrat's girlfriend," Gunjan said. "Nice to meet you."

"I've heard a lot about you," Mayank said laughing.

"Same here," Gunjan said.

"I'm Dia, this is my duffer brother Uday and my cute boyfriend Benji," Dia introduced. "I'm also Nupur and Gunjan's cousin sister."

"Pleased to meet you all," Mayank said.

"So the first date is tomorrow right?" Samrat asked.

"Who's first date?" Mayank asked.

"Your's and Nupur's?" Samrat said winking.

Nupur felt herself blush again.

***********************************************************************************

Mayank couldn't help but feel attracted to this Nupur Bhushan. She was a beautiful girl, who blushed crazily whenever their date or "almost-relationship" was mentioned. She was indeed unique, and he was saying this without knowing her much. She had a really cute, which he badly wanted to pinch. But he controlled his urges and smiled on.

"Nupur wants you to have your first date in the library," Samrat said. "Right Nupur?"

"Really?" Mayank asked, amused. "That's new."

"Well I do like the library," Nupur said, defensively. "And there is nothing wrong with it. It's a lovely place."

"Of course there is nothing wrong with the library," Mayank said, smiling sweetly. "I love the library too."

"Hence I concluded that you two are a match made in heaven," Samrat said.

Mayank glanced at Nupur and saw that she was blushing again. He really loved it how the blood rushed through her cheeks and she got all shy and became the blushing queen.

"So where will you take my sister?" Gunjan asked.

"Why not the...library?" Mayank asked.

***********************************************************************************

Nupur looked up at him in surprise. Had he actually uttered those words? Did he really want to work in the library? She could make out that his smile was genuine. She smiled back and nodded.

"So we will help set the library?" she asked.

"So you do more than blushing," Mayank said. "You do talk!"

"Of course I talk," Nupur said, entering her fimly avatar. "Do I look like some dumbbell to you?"

"No absolutely not," Mayank said, grinning. "So the library it is. I will pick you up at 11:30."

"No ways," Nupur said. "We will meet here...my parents are conservative."

"Oh okay," Mayank said. "I will meet you here by 11:15."

"Done," Nupur said, smiling at last.

***********************************************************************************

Dia and Gunjan had dolled up Nupur for her first date. Despite Nupur's repetitive pleas that it was just the library, they insisted that she went, looking like an angel. They had made her wear a deep blue anarkali shalwar and forced her to leave her hair down. On her insistence, they let her wear a clip. She had applied make-up for the first time too, and everything together made her look gorgeous.

"You look beautiful," Dia said.

"Thanks Dia," Nupur said, looking at her reflection in the mirror. Yes, she did look good.

"Di you look gorgeous," Gunjan said. "I bet you will knock the senses out of Mayank."

"Thanks," Nupur said, blushing.

"Offo blushing queen," Dia joked.

"Dia," Nupur said, playfully hitting her cousin.

Truth was that every time she thought of Mayank, her first boyfriend...okay summer fling, she started blushing like it was nobody's business. She was nervous for her first date and hoped it went well.

"Okay I'm leaving," Nupur said. "It's 11 already."

"Nupur what about jewelery?" Dia asked.

"I'm going to the library, not for a marriage," Nupur said, running out.

***********************************************************************************

Mayank had arrived at the cafeteria in the park by 11:00 am itself. He was dressed in a deep blue full-sleeved shirt and a black jeans. His hair was gelled into spikes. There was no need to mention that he looked very, very, handsome!

Mayank drank a sip of his coffee and waited for his summer fling girlfriend to arrive. Each time the door opened, his eyes looked for her, to see if she had come. He had gotten fed up of it when he looked up for the last time and saw a beautiful Nupur walking in.

His immediate instinct was to get up and walk over to her. She smiled softly at him and he could do nothing but return the smile. He didn't know that this action of his sent a million butterflies in her stomach.

"Others have seen angels, and I have seen thou, and thou art enough," Mayank said, his voice like honey.

***********************************************************************************

Nupur's smile became wider as she heard Mayank say that line to her. She tucked little hair behind her ears and looked up.

"Thank you," she said. "Hi."

"You are welcome," Mayank said. "Hey! So ready?"

"Yeah," Nupur said.

"After you," Mayank said.

Both of them sat in Samrat's car. The driver took them to the local library. Nupur loved helping after the librarian there, it was one of the things that gave her utmost pleasure.

As they arrived both of them went inside the library.

"So?" Mayank asked.

"I will talk to the librarian," Nupur said. "Be right back."

She headed over to the librarian, spoke to her for a while and was back.

"So what are we going to do?" Mayank asked.

"The librarian said we could clear up the romance section and then read out to the little kids for a while," Nupur said. "Sounds fun?"

"Sure," Mayank said.

Both of them headed towards the romance section. Nupur saw the books laid out on the table and nodded at Mayank.

"So we start from here," he said.

"We first arrange them in alphabetical order and then put them on the shelf in the same manner," Nupur said.

"Cool," Mayank said, smiling.

It was noticeable that there was an air of awkwardness between them. They bumped into each other more than once and each time those "bumps" resulted in both of them looking away shyly. Nupur must have set a record for blushing in one single day.

"Nupur," Mayank muttered.

"Yes?" Nupur asked.

"What do you think of the Twilight Series?" Mayank asked.

"Not much," Nupur said. "I think it is highly overrated. I don't understand how someone can fall in love so soon!"

"I totally agree," Mayank said. "It's such a huge craze in Los Angeles."

"I can guess," Nupur chuckled. "And sparkling in the sunlight? Totally uncool!"

"Yeah like YEAH!" Mayank said.

"I didn't know we had so much in common," Nupur said, putting the last set of books in the shelf.

"Neither did I," Mayank said. "So which is your favorite romance novel?"

"Mine," Nupur muttered. "My favorite romance novel is The Notebook. It's such a classic. If a guy can leave everything for the girl he loves...now that's called romance...that's called love."

"I liked that book too," Mayank said. "It's beautiful."

"It's nice to find guys also like good books," Nupur said. "Otherwise they are obsessed with all hardcore stuff."

"You are funny," Mayank said. "So let's go over to the kids?"

"Absolutely," Nupur said. "Follow me."

***********************************************************************************

Mayank watched on as Nupur read out stories to the little kids. They were all sitting around her and looked at her with so much interest. Nupur really did have a way with kids. She read out so well, in such a dramatic and fun manner which made the kids love her more and more.

"One more story Nupur Didi," the children ranted. "One more please."

"I have read out five already children," Nupur said sweetly. "Each five times."

"Please Nupur Didi," they said.

"See it's closing time dears," Nupur said. "I will read out to you some other day."

"Tomorrow?" they asked.

"I will try," Nupur said. "Now put these books back where they belong and sit quietly. Your parents will be here in no time."

"Okay Nupur Didi," they said. "Good bye!"

"Good bye," Nupur said.

"Good bye," Mayank said.

"Good bye Mayank Bhaiyya," they said.

Mayank and Nupur went back to the cafeteria in the park. They sat opposite each other in a private booth. Nupur played with her cold coffee (using a straw).

"I'm sorry if you got bored," Nupur said.

"I had loads of fun Nupur," Mayank said.

"You don't have to lie to please me," Nupur chuckled.

"I had fun," Mayank said. "Trust me. You trust me don't you?"

"I do," Nupur whispered.

For a long time they just sat there, the awkward silence filling in. Their hands brushed against each others occasionally which sent electricity up both their bodies. Nupur felt extremely comfortable yet awkward at Mayank's presence. She felt drawn towards him, the attraction of which she couldn't explain.

***********************************************************************************

By the end of their date Mayank had come to the conclusion that Nupur was the most beautiful and unique girl he had ever met. He liked her a lot, and that itself was an understatement.

"So when is our next...da...outing?" Mayank asked.

"Next week?" Nupur said, a little too eagerly.

"Next week will be perfect," Mayank said. "Can I choose the destination this time?"

"You did this time too," Nupur reminded.

"Yeah...but it was kinda your choice," Mayank said sheepishly.

"I was kidding," Nupur laughed. "Your choice!"

"I need to research on Mumbai city's history," Mayank said. "Let it remain a surprise, for...both of us."

Nupur couldn't help but laugh at his comment. He was such an easy going guy. She could make out that he wasn't trying too hard to impress her. He was just being himself. And this, impressed her, big time. Mayank couldn't help but laugh with her.

"Chalo I need to go," Nupur said. "I told my parents I will be at the library. They know the closing time."

"Okay, I will drop you," Mayank said.

"Oh no," Nupur said. "I will go by myself. I can't have my parents see you. It could land me into big trouble."

Neither of them hugged or kissed, they just smiled and parted ways.

***********************************************************************************

Over the week neither Nupur nor Mayank were at peace. Both of them, unknown to each other were looking forward for their next outing...date. Though their first one was rather simple and unconventional for a first date, neither could deny how much fun they had.

They did spend time together, but with the gang. The gang teased them 24/7, making Nupur blush and Mayank shrugging his shoulders. A lot of times they stole glances at each other, unknown to each other and the gang.

***********************************************************************************

Finally it was Friday night, the night before their next date. Nupur was pacing up and down the room, not knowing what to do. Last time she knew where they were going so she knew what to wear. This time, she didn't. Mayank hadn't told her anything all week. Truth was, they hadn't gotten a chance all week to speak to each other alone. The gang always made sure that they weren't alone at all.

Just before Nupur switched off the light and went to sleep, her cell phone rang. It was from an unknown number.

"Hello," she said.

"Hey Nupur," Mayank's voice greeted from the other line.

"Mayank!" Nupur exclaimed. "It's you!"

"Yep, it's me," Mayank said excitedly. "Were you waiting for my call?"

"No...it's not that," Nupur said. "I was just going to sleep. By the way where did you get my number from?"

"Oh I stole it from Samrat's cell," Mayank said. "He wouldn't let me have it otherwise."

"He is such a duffer," Nupur said, laughing.

"Am I one too?" Mayank asked. "Considering the fact that I'm his brother and all?"

"No...no...absolutely not," Nupur said. "You are...you are...sweet."

"Why thank you," Mayank said. "I think you are pretty sweet yourself!"

"Thanks," Nupur said. "So how come you called?"

"I wanted to tell you to wear something casual tomorrow," Mayank said. "I have found the perfect place to take you."

"Casual?" Nupur asked, uncertainly.

"Casual it is," Mayank said. "So what else?"

"Where are you taking me?" Nupur asked.

"It's a surprise, secret, whatever you want to call it," Mayank said.

"I love surprises," Nupur said softly.

"And I think you would love this surprise," Mayank said.

Both of them kept on talking, unaware of the time. They rambled on for hours, totally forgetting the outside world. One didn't need an IQ of 180 to figure out that they were both very much into each other.

Soon it was 1 am in the night and they were still deep conversation. Nupur's eyes flashed to the clock and she almost had a panic attack.

"Oh my god Mayank!" Nupur gasped.

"I'm not your god," Mayank said.

"Look at the time!" Nupur said. "It's freaking 1 am! I need to sleep! So do you!"

"Stop having such a panic attack," Mayank said, laughing loudly. "I didn't really notice the time while I was talking to...you."

"Same here," Nupur said softly. Then she added in a dramatic tone "I need to catch on my beauty sleep."

"How do you manage to be the girl-next-door and the drama queen at the same time?" Mayank chuckled.

"Sorry Nupur Bhushan doesn't share her trade secrets," Nupur said.

"You are an original person," Mayank said. "I can say, surely, that there is no other girl like you in this earth!"

"I can say the same about yourself Mr. Sharma," Nupur said.

"Hey that's another thing we have in common!" Mayank said.

"Okay okay Mayank good night," Nupur said.

"Good night sweetheart," Mayank said. "Try not to dream too much about me."

"I will," Nupur said. "It's not easy as you think!"

"Okay good night," Mayank said.

Both of them hung up and went to sleep in their respective beds, their dreams about each other.

The next day Nupur was in the cafeteria, dressed in a plain purple full-sleeved top and a blue jeans. Her hair was tied back into a pony tail. Mayank arrived and smiled as her went over to her.

"You are looking beautiful," Mayank said.

"Tell me something I don't know," Nupur said, laughing.

"Still in drama queen mode are we?" Mayank asked.

"Tumne sahi socha," Nupur said. "By the way...you look nice too."

"Thanks," Mayank said.

"No drama-king?" Nupur asked.

"Nah...I don't want to give you competition," Mayank said.

"You can't," Nupur said.

"Shall we?" Mayank asked, extending his hand. Nupur nodded.

She didn't place her hand in his, rather just walked beside him. Mayank felt sort of dejected at this, but didn't show it.

***********************************************************************************

"You brought me to a carnival?" Nupur asked, amazed.

"You didn't like it?" Mayank asked, sadly.

"Like it? Absolutely NOT!" Nupur said. "I LOVE IT!!!"

"Really?" Mayank asked, a wide grin breaking on his face.

"Like YEAH!" Nupur said. "Wow! Mayank you are truly a great guy!"

"I'm glad you liked...loved it," Mayank said.

"I was bound to!" Nupur said. "Come on! What are you waiting for?"

Both of them went on various rides. They had so much fun, giggling and laughing like small kids. Mayank dragged Nupur and pointed towards a roller coaster.

"Roller coaster?" Nupur said. "No no no no ways!"

"Come on don't be such a spoilt sport!" Mayank said. "It's just a roller coaster!"

"Just a roller coaster?" Nupur asked. "It's not just a roller coaster! It's so freaky!"

"No it is not!" Mayank said. "Come on Nupur! Come with me!"

"Mayank," Nupur groaned.

Mayank pulled Nupur and stood in the line. She protested like a little kid, but Mayank silenced her by placing his finger on her mouth. It worked, and Nupur kept quiet. She looked into his eyes and got lost in them. The ride attendant had to ask them to sit down.

Nupur muttered all the prayers she knew and Mayank looked at her, with an amused expression on his face. The ride started with Nupur's eyes closed. She screamed and screeched and when one of the scariest points came she hugged Mayank tightly and hid her head in his chest. He held onto her, and unknowingly, he was smiling happily.

***********************************************************************************

Three weeks after their carnival date, Mayank and Nupur had officially become a couple. Everyone addressed them as Mayank-Nupur, Mayank-Nupur. It was a rare occurrence that their names were ever called out singly. It was such a cute scene, the way they both looked up when their names were called. First they would look at each other and then at the person calling out to them. It was impossible to find a cuter pair.

And with time, Nupur felt closer to Mayank than she had felt to anyone. She longed to see him every day with the gang. In fact Mayank was the sole occupant of her thoughts, dreams, EVERYTHING!

***********************************************************************************

As for Mayank, he was smitten with Nupur. He used to keep looking at her all the time, no matter whether she was talking to him or not. He noticed every action of hers and smiled silly when she smiled at him. He was behaving like a typical lover boy. He would surprise her with gifts and roses, and when she would thank him, he'd say "anything to see you smile".

During their amazing moments with each other they had conveniently forgotten that this relationship was temporary, their days together was temporary, it wouldn't last as long as they wanted it. Even their feelings were temporary. This was just a summer fling after all.

***********************************************************************************

A whole month had passed since Mayank and Nupur had become a "fling-couple". They had started spending every waking moment with each other. And of course every sleeping moment was with each other's thoughts. They spent almost all night talking to each other on the phone, sitting on the window sill, seeing each other in the moonlight.

Nupur was unable to fathom what these feelings were. Every moment all she wanted to do was either be with Mayank or get lost in his dreams. She was afraid, that once Mayank left for LA these feelings would haunt and taunt her. She was afraid that she wouldn't be greeted by his million dollar smile again.

Mayank on the other hand let himself get lost in Nupur. He had never felt like this before, so happy, so whole. Nupur had given him something that he had never felt was lacking in his life, she completed him.

***********************************************************************************

Samrat noticed that the two were slowly falling for each other. He decided to talk to them about it.

"Nupur this is not right," Samrat said.

"What is not right Samrat?" Nupur asked.

"Your feelings for Mayank," Samrat said. "You know he is leaving in two weeks."

"What feelings?" Nupur scoffed. "We are good friends, that's all!"

"You guys practically live with each other!" Samrat said. "Nupur when he leaves you will face a lot of pain. Please don't take this relationship seriously. It is just a fling."

"I know Samrat, so chill dude," Nupur said. "There is nothing serious between me and Mayank."

"Promise?" Samrat asked.

"Promise...I think," Nupur added to herself.

***********************************************************************************

"My feelings for her are not serious," Mayank said. "We are good friends, that's all."

"Dude I've seen the way you look at her," Samrat said. "You can't take your eyes off her."

"Nothing like that," Mayank shrugged.

"Mayank you are smitten with Nupur," Samrat said. "Dude be careful."

"Yeah maybe I'm falling for her!" Mayank yelled. "Maybe I'm falling in love with Nupur! SO WHAT? Everyone loves! It's HUMAN NATURE!"

"But you don't love the one you are not meant to be with," Samrat said softly and went away from there.

Mayank collapsed on the sofa. Was he really falling in love with Nupur? Was he losing himself to her? Was Nupur becoming everything for him? Was Samrat right? Was he and Nupur NOT meant to be? How could he live with that? After all he felt for her!

***********************************************************************************

"Mayank we will have to say our goodbyes a week early," Nupur said.

"Why?" Mayank asked.

"My family and I are going to Morena for two weeks," Nupur said. "It's my cousin's wedding."

"But such a sudden plan?" Mayank asked.

"Yes, it's a sudden plan," Nupur said. "Tomorrow will be our last out-...date."

"I guess so...it will be special Nupur," Mayank said. "For the most special girl in my life."

Nupur blushed and went away.

***********************************************************************************

For her last date with Mayank, Nupur had dressed up in a flowing black dress. Her hair had been curled and let loose on her shoulders. She had worn a chain gifted to her by Mayank...it had a "M" on it. After dressing up, she sat on her bed.

Tomorrow she would be leaving for Morena. By the time she came back Mayank would have gone back to LA. She would miss him dearly. She had begun to like Mayank, really. She had cried the whole of last night thinking how much she would miss him. Her conversation with Samrat came back to her, when he had told her not to lose herself to Mayank. It would hurt much, much more. Nupur had brushed away those thoughts thinking that she would never get serious with Mayank...but now her thought had changed.

Was she falling in love with Mayank?

***********************************************************************************

Mayank drove Nupur to the first part of their destination. Both of them were totally silent, not out of discomfort, rather out of sadness. This beautiful togetherness and belonging that they found in each other wouldn't be there after tomorrow. After tomorrow, all would be over.

"You are looking beautiful," Mayank commented.

"Thanks," Nupur said, blushing. "You too."

"You know what?" Mayank asked, looking at her. "I love it when you blush."

Nupur blushed a little more, but didn't say anything.

"When you blush I think that you are the most beautiful girl in the world, I feel like holding you close and protecting you from the big bad world," Mayank said softly. "I feel that I'm the luckiest guy in the world...because this wonderful girl is mine....or was mine."

"Thanks," Nupur said. "You are a wonderful guy too. Don't ever forget that."

"I wont," Mayank said. "I can't forget a single thing you've said to me."

"Mayank I will miss you," Nupur said. "And your future girlfriend, whoever she will be lucky, is darned lucky."

"Guess I could say the same about you," Mayank said. "I will miss you...hey we have arrived."

Nupur looked out and saw that they had arrived at a really posh restaurant. In fact, it was so posh that she had only thought of going there in her dreams. She gasped and looked at Mayank questioningly. Mayank smiled, got out and opened the door for her.

"Mayank all this," she said. "You didn't have to."

"This is just the beginning," Mayank said. "Picture ab bhi baaki hain mere dost!"

Both of them burst out into laughter and they went inside the restaurant. Mayank had reserved a private table for them. Nupur was so amazed at all the things this amazing guy had done for her. Never in her dreams had she imagined such an amazing date in store for her.

They sat down at their table, opposite each other. Mayank couldn't take his eyes off her. She looked so beautiful and she blushed too, making it impossible for him to look anywhere but her face.

"Stop looking at me like that," Nupur said softly.

"What should I do?" Mayank asked. "When you come in front of me looking so ravishing?"

"I'm hungry," Nupur said.

"Oh yeah let's order," Mayank said.

Both of them settled on their common favorite, Vegetable Pulao. They also shared a glass of strawberry milkshake. After they were done with the meal both of them sat silently in the car.

"So what now?" Nupur said.

"I know...let's go for a walk on the beach," Mayank said.

"What? Are you mad?" Nupur asked.

"It's romantic," Mayank said sheepishly. "And I want to have a memory of walking down the beach with you."

"Okay," Nupur said.

***********************************************************************************

Both of them walked along the shoreline, the water tickling their feet. They walked side-by-side in absolute silence, taking in the beauty of the moment. The cool breeze added to the moment. To the outside world they maybe just another couple, but to each other, they were much more than that.

Their hands brushed against each other and Nupur had an intake of breath. Slowly and carefully, Mayank entwined his hand with Nupur's. Her heartbeat paused for a minute, the intensity of his gesture hitting in. She glanced sideways at him and then, tightened her grip on his hand.

Hand in hand, both of them walked on.

***********************************************************************************

Suddenly it started drizzling and they let go of their hands immediately.

"Oh freak," Mayank said. "Wait here, I will be right back."

"Okay come soon," Nupur said.

Mayank quickly went to get something while Nupur started dancing in the rain. She loved the rain. It was so peaceful (unless struck by a storm). Every single rain she used to dance and be mocked by her friends and family. But not today, today she was feeling so happy and exhilarated. She would dance to her hearts content.

***********************************************************************************

Mayank came running and paused on seeing the beautiful Nupur dancing in the rain. She was so graceful, like a swan. He walked upto her quietly.

Sajde mein yuhi jhukta hoon,

Tum pe hi aa ke rukhta hoon,

kya yeh sabko hota hain?

Nupur noticed a silent Mayank approaching her. He looked so...so handsome drenched in rain. She walked up to him and smiled.

Humko kya lena hain sabse,

tumse hi sab baatein abse,

ban gaye ho tum meri DUA!

Nupur danced around him, totally enjoying the moment.

Sajde mein yuhi jhukta hoon,

tum pe hi aa ke rukhta hoon,

kya yeh sabko hota hain?

Mayank just kept looking at her, totally scintillated. He had never seen someone more beautiful than Nupur at the moment. She looked even more beautiful than she did when she blushed.

Humko kya lena hain sabse,

tumse hi sab baatein abse,

ban gaye ho tum meri DUA!

Nupur ran off to the ocean and Mayank began chasing her.

Khuda Jaane ki main fida hoon,

Khuda Jaane mein mit gaya,

Khuda Jaane yeh kyun huwa hain,

ki ban gaye ho tum mere KHUDA!

Mayank hugged Nupur from the back and spun her around a few times. Nupur closed her eyes, enjoying the moment.

Tu kahe to tere hi kadam ke,

main nishaon pe,

Chalun ruku ishaare pe,

Mayank slowly stopped spinning her around and slowly she stood up, his hands still around her waist.

Tu kahe to khawbon ka bana ke,

main bahana sa,

Mila karu sirhaane pe,

Nupur pushed him and ran onto the beach. She turned back to look at him, still running.

Tum Se dil ki baatein seekhi

Tum Se hi yeh raahein seekhi

Tum pe marke main toh jee GAYA!

Mayank splashed around in the ocean, feeling happy and wonderful.

Khuda jaane ki main fida hoon,

khuda jaane main lut gaya,

khuda jaane yeh kyun huwa hain,

ki ban gaye ho tum mere KHUDA!

Mayank came running upto her and pulled her closer to him. He held her hand and twirled her around.

Dil kahe to aaj tum,

chup aalo tum panahon main,

ke darr hain tumko kho doonga.

He placed one hand on his shoulder and other in his hand and they began dancing.

Dil kahe sambhal zara,

Khushi ko na nazar laga,

ki darr main to ro doonga

They danced with so much passion and happiness.

Karti ho sau vaaden tumse

baandhein dil ke dhaage tumse

yeh tumhe na jaane kya huwa.

Mayank lifted Nupur up in the air and she sprung her hands open, feeling the rain on them.

Khuda jaane ki main fida hoon,

khuda jaane main loot gaya,

khuda jaane yeh kyun huwa hain,

ki ban gaye ho tum mere KHUDA!

As they stood in that position, both of them realized that they were madly in love with each other. Nothing would change their feelings, but decided not to confess.

A MONTH LATER

It was Nupur's last year in her bachelor course. Next year she would be starting on her masters course. She was excited for that...and nervous. Mayank was starting his masters this year itself, in the University of Southern California. She cursed herself for thinking of Mayank, because every thought of him not only brought a flood of memories back, but it also reminded her that her first true love went incomplete.

She still wore the "M" chain around her neck, signifying that she had surrendered herself to Mayank, that her heart was with him, no matter whether they were still together or not. When they danced together in the rain, she had realized that not only did she love Mayank, but loved him madly, crazily and deeply too.

The bell rang and the professor went out. Nupur grabbed her books and exited the class when a young student approached her.

"Nupur Bhushan?" she asked.

"Yes," Nupur said.

"This is for you," the student said, handing over a note.

"For me?" Nupur asked. "Who gave it to you?"

"I've never seen the person before," the student said. "Okay bye."

"Bye," Nupur said. She stuffed the note inside her book as she saw her friends.

***********************************************************************************

The note lay unread in Nupur's book. Three days had passed since the day she had gotten it. She had gone ahead with her daily, Mayank-less life without bothering about the note.

She sat down to study and flicked through the pages when she saw the note. She opened it and it read.

Hey beautiful,

I want to meet you. Come to the park at 6:30 pm today.

--Jaaneman

"Jaaneman?" Nupur thought. "Who could this be?"

Then she realized that it was for 3 days ago.

"Crap!" she said. "I should have read this aloud. But who is this jaaneman? And after Mayank no guy could come anywhere near."

She crumpled the note and threw it into the dustbin.

***********************************************************************************

The next day in college the Principal informed Nupur that a new student would be joining them soon. She was to be his student counselor till he got used to the college. She agreed, not very happy about it.

Just as she was going to go to her hide-out, the library, a student came upto her. It was the same one who had given her the note earlier.

"Nupur the guy has given you a note again," the student said.

"Who is this guy?" Nupur asked, taking the note.

"He is incredibly handsome," the student said. "You couldn't find a better looking guy even if you went around the earth."

"I bet I could," Nupur muttered to herself. "Thank you."

She opened the note and it read:-

Dear Nupur,

You kept me waiting all night.

I just kept thinking you would arrive any moment, looking like an angel.

Do come today evening, and don't make me wait.

(Do wear a white sari if possible).

Yours,

Jaaneman.

"White sari?" Nupur asked herself. "Who is this jaaneman who wants to meet me while I'm wearing a white sari?"

"What's up Nupur?" Samrat said. "Whose love note are you reading?"

"See it for yourself," Nupur said, handing over the letter to him.

"Woah woah woah!" Samrat said. "This is awesome. You are going!"

"I don't even know who he is," Nupur said.

"You like surprises don't you?" he asked.

Nupur nodded.

"Then I'm sure you will love this one," Samrat said.

"How do you know?" Nupur asked suspiciously.

"I know everything," Samrat said. Winking, he left from there.

For a minute Nupur thought whether her admirer was Samrat. She would throttle him for cheating on Gunjan then.

***********************************************************************************

Gunjan and Dia made sure that Nupur wore a white sari. She had just had a bath, so her long hair was wet and was lying softly on her shoulders. Her "M" chain still hung around her neck.

"Gunjan I don't want to do this," Nupur protested.

"Di please," Gunjan said. "I'm sure you wont regret this evening."

"God what is happening?" Nupur wondered.

"Now go!" Gunjan forced.

"But-"

"GO!" Gunjan and Dia said together.

***********************************************************************************

Nupur looked around the park. Everything was decorated in the shades of white and silver. Did someone like her so much? But she liked...loved only one person- Mayank.

"Is anyone here?" she asked. "I don't like such pranks!"

"Look behind," a voice said.

"Yeh awaz," Nupur muttered as she turned behind.

What...rather who she saw knocked the day lights out of her. In front of her stood her first love, her true love, Mayank. He was wearing a white shirt and black pants. She blinked hard to see whether she was seeing or imagining. She went upto him and touched his face to see whether he would disappear.

"I'm really here," Mayank said softly, touching her hands.

"Mayank," Nupur said. "You...here...how...why?"

"I decided to do my masters in India," Mayank said.

"But why?" Nupur asked. She hoped he would take her name.

"I've heard that the education system in India is really good and of high standards," Mayank said, smiling.

"Oh," Nupur said and her face fell.

"Why?" Mayank asked. "Did you want to hear something else?"

"No...it's not that," Nupur said.

"I love India, I love the people, it's so homely and friendly," Mayank said. "And the biggest reason...you."

"Me?" Nupur asked, suddenly looking up.

"Yes, you," Mayank said. "After you left to Morena I realized how much you meant to me...and how much I need you in my life."

"Mayank," Nupur said.

"I realized I couldn't live without you," Mayank said. "And I realized how hard I had fallen for you."

Nupur was silent.

"You don't have to reciprocate my feelings," Mayank said. "But I want you to know Nupur. I love you. I love you more than I've love anyone, and that includes my family and friends. You taught me what it is to love. You are not just a summer fling for me Nupur. You are my entire life."

***********************************************************************************

Nupur couldn't believe what she was hearing. Did he, Mayank Sharma, really say all those words to her? Did he say he loves her? All those stuff he just said to her, those were the same feelings she felt for him. Every word he said, every single word, she wanted to say to him. But right now, the overwhelming feelings of love and happiness over took her capability to talk and she hugged him tight.

"I love you Mayank," she said. "I've never ever felt like this about anyone before. You don't know how empty, how lifeless I felt without you. You came Mayank...you came...I love you!"

Mayank hugged her tighter. This was all he had hoped for. He had left his life behind in LA just for Nupur. There was no other reason, actually. She, she was the reason he moved to Mumbai. Nupur Bhushan, the worlds most unique and beautiful girl, the love of his life.

***********************************************************************************

I've never gone with the wind,

Just let it flow,

Let it take me where it wants to go,

Till you opened the door,

There's so much more,

I've never seen it before.

Mayank and Nupur broke away from the hug, but stilled stayed in each other's arms. They looked into each other's eyes lovingly.

I was trying to fly,

But I couldn't find the wings,

Then you came along,

And you changed everything!

Nupur ran away and lifted up her hands. Mayank went upto her and traced the outline of her hands.

You lift my feet off the ground,

You Spin me around,

You make me crazier, crazier,

Feels like I'm falling,

And I'm lost in your eyes,

You make me crazier, crazier.

Mayank lifted her off the ground, like the day at the beach. They looked into each other's eyes, not wanting to look anywhere else.

Watched from a distance as you,

Made life your own,

Every sky was your own kind of blue,

And I wanted to know how that would feel,

And you made it so real.

Nupur saw Mayank dance with such finesse. He was thoroughly enjoying himself. She too wanted to dance like him. He came towards her, pulled her towards him and they began dancing.

You showed me something that I couldn't see,

You opened my eyes and you made me believe.

As they danced, totally lost in each other, they surrendered their souls to each other.

Baby you showed me what living is for,

I don't want to hide anymore!

Mayank cupped her face with his hands and brought his face closer to hers.

You lift my feet off the ground,

You spin me around,

You make me crazier, crazier.

Feels like I'm falling,

And I'm lost in your eyes,

You make me crazier, crazier.

Mayank softly placed his lips on hers and kissed her. Evey emotion, every feeling was let loose as two lovers, madly in love, surrendered to each other, kissed under the moonlight, oblivious to any activity around them.

It wasn't a summer fling after all.

It was love.
