HBP nominated at British Book Awards

JK Rowling's Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince has been nominated for Best Book of the Year at this year's British Book Awards, reports CBBC Newsround. The winners will be announced on March 29 in London. To vote for HBP, click here!

Dan buys Black family tree

Daniel Radcliffe bought JK Rowling's hand-drawn Black family tree at last night's auction for Book Aid International for a whopping 30,000 ($52,284). Dan also successfully bid for handwritten works by authors Iain Banks and Tom Stoppard. Dan's mom, who bid on his behalf at the auction, said, "This should put paid to anyone who says that Daniel doesn't like reading. Daniel hasn't stopped since he read the first Harry Potter book and he loves Iain Banks and Tom Stoppard."

The auction raised a total of 63,000 ($109,796).

JKR answers latest FAQ poll

JK Rowling updated the FAQ poll on her website today, answering the question, "What happens to a secret when the Secret-Keeper dies?" That question received 46% of all votes cast over the past several months.

Black family tree to be auctioned tonight

The family tree of "The Noble and Most Ancient House of Black," hand-drawn by JK Rowling and including names and dates not yet revealed in the Harry Potter books, will be auctioned off tonight by Bloomsbury Auctions. All proceeds will benefit Book Aid International. Thanks, Kelly!

School district bans 'Half-Blood Prince'

A California school district banned Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince from their libraries yesterday, and their reasoning ranks as one of the more creative (and misguided) we've heard: the Harry Potter books are fantasy, and "we want books to be things that children would be able to relate to in real life," teacher Marlene Olivarez.

Olivarez also said that she did not feel the Harry Potter books "build character, give kids enjoyment, and encourage reading."

Update: Thanks to reader Luna for letting us know that you can write to the school district regarding this banning using the addresses on this page.

Thanx to veritaserum

No Mundungus Fletcher, Trelawney present for film 5
We have just learned that Mundungus Fletcher will not appear in OotP after all. They have cut his character from the film.

Warner Bros will not comment, but we have been assured this is the case.

We will keep you informed as we learn more.

UPDATE: It has been confirmed that Mundungnus Fletcher isn't in the 'Order of the Phoenix' script however Professor Trelawney is. This doesn't mean it's set in stone and could be subject to change.

Birdwatchers wide-eyed as owls fly south to settle in Hebrides

HARRY Potter himself may have trouble explaining the appearance of "Hedwig" lookalikes in the Western Isles.

Observers have been surprised and delighted to see snowy owls, normally found near the Arctic Circle, setting up home in the islands.

< src="http://www.scotsman.com/js/init_250x250.js" =text/>

RSPB Scotland staff say they have recently recorded the biggest influx of the birds in the Outer Hebrides since the early 1970s.

It is thought that between three and six of the birds - among the largest owls in Europe, standing almost 2ft tall with a wingspan of over 5ft, were living on the islands throughout last summer.

The species is known to millions of JK Rowling followers who have read about Harry Potter's mail-delivering snowy owl.

It is used to extremely low temperatures and is one of a number of bird species that go through cycles with periodic "irruptions" - a spreading of territory in response to food being more widely available.

It is thought the influx in the Western Isles could be related to an increase in the number of lemmings, the owl's favoured prey, in the Arctic Circle.

Up until 1975, snowy owls bred for a number of years on Fetlar in Shetland. This time nobody has so far seen two owls together, although two were recorded within a few miles of each other over a brief period on North Uist last year.

Jamie Boyle, RSPB Scotland's reserves officer on the Uists, said: "This fantastic species adds to Uist's already incredible wildlife spectacle and makes the islands an area that all birdwatchers must come to.

"Almost all the owls seem to prefer setting up home on the isolated machair areas that are rich in rabbits, their main food item in the absence of lemmings, although some have favoured small islands on tidal strands."

He added: "There is no evidence of them attempting to breed as yet, but this is certainly indicative of them expanding their natural range.

"It would be fantastic to think that one day in the future they might breed in the Outer Hebrides."

In 2003 a snowy owl set up home around Traigh Ear, north of the Balranald nature reserve, and attracted birdwatchers from Glasgow, Edinburgh and Inverness.

Last year there were sightings of the birds in Shetland, Wester Ross and Aberdeenshire
