Dr Shashank's dilemma

Dr Shashank aka Mohnish Behl of Dill Mill Gayye is going through a big personal crisis, his daughter Riddhima's marriage might crumble before his eyes . What will he do? In a bid to find answers to these questions, indya.com met up this highly talented film and TV actor. Mohnish spoke at length about the show and his long journey in the entertainment industry which spans 28 years. He also talked about his mom, the legendary silver screen actress Nutan.

What is Shashank thinking at the moment?

Dr Shashank believes in the institution of marriage. He does not think that Riddima's problems with Sid are so serious that they should separate. And being a father, he would employ every possible resource, including under handed ones to make sure that Riddima 's marriage remain intact.

How would you describe Shashank's relationship with Dr Armaan?

Yes, my character's relationship with Armaan has been a tumultuous one. At first, he did not like him one bit, thinking him to be a frivolous guy. But over time he realised that Armaan is not that bad. Now he regards him as a son he never had. When Arman had first left due to medical reasons, Shashank was the only one he confided in. All said and done, he is Riddhima's father and his priority will be to save her marriage. His equation with Armaan will remain, but on different keel.

What is your personal take on ending marriages?

I believe that one should give 100 per cent to any relationship, be it marriage or work. Having said that, if the relationship gets detrimental to the interests of one or both parties, it would be better to call it quits.

Do you think the return of Karan Singh Grover has helped the show?

Yes, he is the star of show, and the rising TRPs are a clear indication of that. I really don't believe in commenting on the personal life of anybody. As far as I am concerned, he is a fine actor who does his job, period.

Your recent films have not done well?

Yes, I am extremely disappointed with the failure of Rann. I had a very strong character and the film based on the media boasted of big names like Amitabh Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh. Had it worked, my career would have been somewhere else. Tum Milo Toh Sahi also did not work out. I feel sad for such failures because it prevents film makers from experimenting with different themes. Both Raan and Tum ... were not your standard bollywood fare.

How do you see Television v/s films?

The small screen took centre stage in the late nineties when cinema was going through creative bankruptcy. And TV offered great stuff like Amanat, Hasratein etc. But now things are reversing again. Cinema is offering differentiated content.

Among all your films, which ones are closest to your heart?

I think it would be unfair to name a few. As all of them have given me something to take home. But if you ask which have really helped my career, then it would have to be the three Rajshri films (Maine Pyar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Hum Saath-Saath Hain) and Baaghi no doubt.

How difficult is it to carry the mantle of being Nutan's son? Do people expect you to match up to her?

Let me tell you, I can't match her, period. And I don't think I would like somebody to tell me that I was better than her, for I think it would be demeaning to Mom. Over the years, I have been accepted as a good actor and I am happy with my position. Her good will in the industry has also helped a lot. I wish to go on record and state that my connect with the older lot of audience is strictly because of her.

In closing, any message to Riddhima?

I would just tell her, cheer up kiddo life is not only about relationships, be strong and work to save your marriage.
