ummmmmmm I cud be wrong but i think from screeching sound ans size of bird seems like its vulture(giddh) or can be eagle, tout contraire to western culture eagles in hindu mythlogy r considered as bad omen , like they consume flesh(vultures too) of dead animals

I THINK the local ppl of chattisgarh wud b calling a kite,eagle as maireli chidiya !!!

I just call it eagle, that's what it look like.

Like Charru has posted, the bird eats flesh so it maybe considered a bad omen.

Mareli chidiya is in Telugu called " Teetuvu pitta--- Teetuvu is the kind of the bird and Pitta means bird).

Even in Andhra when this bird makes that kind of sound people take it as a bad omen as it indicates death of some body.

It is not eagle, kite or any other bird. You can see the prolonged wings and the sound is exactly the same. I heard it in my child hood.

Even in Kerala this bird signifies death and if it screeches in ur compund then u will hear the news of death..

Wen i was in Kerala few yrs back for my studies, suddenly in the evening there was this horribl screech and then the elders in my house panicked and within a week my maternal aunt's husb (suffering from cancer) passed away...

then after few months it screeched again and this time my fathers sister's husb passed away.. i mean i was amazed at the happenings.. How a bird screeching will cause death.. i asked my grand mom and she said this bird does not normally screech.. it only flies quite around.. she said in normal cicumstances no one will even notice its presence..

But wen it screeches it means death....

Amazing eh!!!!! and scary too ..

But its not an eagle ..
