Award functions have become very predictable now. It's almost like award organisers have their set of favourites that they want to appease for various reasons and those people are inevitably given awards under new genres. Now, the Bachchans are a very powerful family, so at the Screen Awards, they were awarded the Jodi No 1 title for their performance in Paa. But it got confusing 'cos another similar award went to SRK and Kajol for the jodi of the decade. They were clearly the winners, having starred in some of the most successful films together. But one of the contender jodis for this award was Salman-Aishwarya. Ash instantly looked at her hubby with a 'why are they doing this' kind of a questioning glance. But we must say that Ash was most graceful all through the function. She had a warm smile when the cameras panned on her while Salman performed on stage.
What was Salman upto, though? He had a group of talented kids for company and while he appeared to be enjoying himself, it looked like he was conducting PT classes. The jarring fusion music coupled with a panting Salman desperately trying to get his steps right actually made for a comical picture. Maybe that's why Ash appeared so amused.
The show had two sets of hosts. Madhavan and Omi Vaidya from 3 idiots, who did a great job. When they took a break, SRK and Shahid Kapur compered some segments.
The duo appeared to be very comfortable with each other and kept pulling each other's legs. When SRK ribbed Shahid about aping him in all his films, Shahid retorted that SRK had not only been aping the Big B but was also working in his remakes. Poor SRK, looks like the industry is not willing to let him forget about his Don debacle. Speaking of the Big B, the legend was so overcome with emotion when he was announced winner of the best actor award for his unforgettable performance as Auro in Paa, that he was spotted hugging Balki (the director) for a few minutes. It came as a surprise, considering that he is someone who has won so many awards that you would think that it shouldn't matter to him anymore. But clearly it did, and it was almost like Auro had taken over from the Big B.
Wife Jaya had a knowing smile when Abhishek and Aishwarya were called on the stage to announce the winner for this award. For once, the senior Mrs Bachchan was in a good mood. She kept smiling at the cameras and appeared to be enjoying herself all through the evening. Such a refreshing change from the sour expression she puts on. Vidya Balan won the best actress award and went up to the stage to receive the same from Rekha but did not cast a glance in Shahid's direction. The two dated each other briefly but Shahid dumped her soon. It was quite funny as two of Shahid's exes were present that night. Kareena watched him perform from backstage although her expression was bland. The only one missing was Priyanka. The rate at which Shahid is breaking up with actresses, he will soon have no one left to star opposite him.
