India tells students not to hit back over violence

By theaustralian

INDIA has called for its students in Australia to show restraint in the face of a series of violent attacks against them, after more than 200 Indians protested on the streets and exacted a "vigilante" reprisal attack on a group of Middle Eastern men.

Amid reports of an unruly crowd surge and Indian students exacting reprisals on a posse of Middle-Eastern youth in nearby Marion Street, police returned to the scene at 10.30pm in a force of up to 20 squad cars from three local area commands.

"A group of Lebanese boys pulled up and started throwing eggs and soft drink bottles at some of the students," said Bullu Singh, manager of an Indian restaurant on Wigram Street.

"A fight followed and a couple of students took down the rego of the car and handed it to the police, but they didn't seem to do very much."

Police arrested two of the fleeing Middle-Eastern youths but when an Indian student was escorted into a paddy wagon the crowd became incensed. "The crowd were yelling, 'shame, shame police, we want justice'," said Jagvinder Virk, who was dining on Wigram Street at the time.

Eight arrested over attack on Indian students

Victoria Police have arrested eight people over an attack on two Indian students in Melbourne last night.

A group of about 10 people allegedly approached the two men in Swanston Street just after 10:00pm.

Some comments were made by the group towards the pair and the 18-year-old was pushed to the ground and kicked. He suffered an ear wound.

The other man was punched to the ground and suffered some minor cuts.

After the attack the offenders, described as of Asian appearance, fled the scene.

Victoria has recently been portrayed as racist and violent in the Indian media after the stabbing death of Indian graduate Nitin Garg on January 2nd and a series of attacks on Indian students studying in Melbourne.
