Tell me about it!
Guess what, I'm not white, or pink. I'm brown. That's me, so deal with it.
It's not even the shaadi.com thing, but what bothers me the most is when girls themselves buy into it. I hate the entire skin-lightening industry. It's such a nightmare. So many bollywood stars also support this. Apparently these creams are for better complexion -- i.e. no pimples and blemishes, but they are sold to people with the belief that it will make them lighter. John Abraham clarified this in some press release, but then, hello, can't you just have more honest advertising for it then instead of trying to cash in on a obvious insecurity and inferiority complex that Indians have because they're not white? It's so unethical.
I like that Ash said she would not endorse fairness creams. It's because she came on Oprah once and Oprah asked her about skin lightening in India and she was embarrassed! Oh well, I'm just glad it worked. Hopefully more celebs will catch on.
I'm glad there are more and more non-white beauty ideals too now. I just love Bipasha's complexion or Genelia and Freida Pinto. Women who I can actually relate to instead of green-eyed, blonde-haired ones! The thing about Freida Pinto is that she's going to be successful internationally because she gets that she's beautiful without having to have bleached skin, hair and fake contacts. It's what's going to make her uniquely beautiful. If Indian producers got that, we'd see more darker-skinned girls on TV and movies.
