As far as I know it's Sanjay and Salman who started the abs trend (80's then 90's)...Then Hritik asked some tips to Salman who helped him to be build his body..

Yes it's a trend.

Yes SRK is very thin - let's not forget he builded his abs in a short time so it's not as extraordinary as Salman or Duggu

Hritik used to be very thin and I guess he wanted to work out to build a good athletic body. He's obssessed with working out an dgoing to the gym cause he wants to maintain his abs..He forbids his children of eating chocolate and avoid any fat and sugar food.

Ah Salman...I remember him in KKHH --- pure hotness and the good part of it his asb really suit him.

Aamir is short and a Ghajini body makes him look heavy. It's impressive though..

As for Shahid he builds up his body for roles and yes it's better when the working out gets noticed and appreciated - Don't think he copies....they all do it so...if everyone copies there's no copy they're just followers..

Aamir's look in Ghajini helped him to make a mega blockbuster movie in India...

SRK's abs helped him to market OSO

I guess for Shahid It'll be the same...It's a trend..anyway it's hard to keep them so when they don't practise exercises they loose the abs (Aamir didn't to look thinner for 3 idiots, SRK had an operation so he couldn't and now Shahid looks thinner for his YRF...)..Only Duggu&Sallu keep that bodybuilding look with John and Dino...and oerhaps others I don't know

Body's actors are their first tool of work...so that does make sense. Rani even compared actors as prostitutes who sell their bodies while doing a prostitue in a movie....So it's coherent...to use abs to get attention and desire from the audience...
