Band baj gayi

Brass band wallahs at the Shilpa-Raj wedding on Sunday were promptly asked to stop the music just as they started playing Shilpa's former love Akshaykumar

Shilpa Shetty might not have invited her ex-boyfriend Akshay Kumar for her wedding on Sunday at Lonavla, but the brass band, which was invited to play just a few minutes before her pheras, had certainly not forgotten her earlier close association with Akshay.

Dhadkan / PIC: Sachin Haralkar

At around 3 pm, the bandwallahs started some popular Bollywood music by first playing a song from the Akshay Kumar-Shilpa Shetty starrer Dhadkan outside Kiran Bawa's bungalow, which was the wedding venue. They had hardly played for a minute, when a few people (obviously instructed by the Shetty and Kundra family) came running out of the bungalow and asked them to immediately stop the band music.

An eyewitness says, "The band members were shocked and were wondering what went wrong. They looked quizzically at the people who were ordering them to stop the music of Dhadkan but all that they got in return were harsh glares. At this point they were categorically told, 'Akshay ki film ka gaana mat bajao'."

After that, the band members were sternly instructed by those who had told them to stop the music, to stand aside and not play until further orders. They were also told that they would have to thereafter run the list of songs they would be playing all evening, past them. The dejected band stood aside just a few metres away.

"They started playing a fresh batch of songs only around 5 pm, and this time, of course, they didn't have any Akshay song on their list," says the eyewitness.

"It was quite a hilarious situation. Imagine the crestfallen band on one side and the livid guys who came running out from the bungalow. We wonder what was going on in Shilpa and Raj's mind at that moment when this incident happened," adds the eyewitness.

By invitation only
Nani not invited to wedding

Even as Shilpa got married to Raj in true Bunt style, there was an air of disappointment in her hometown, Mangalore. Sources close to the family at Mudalady said that while her maternal grandmother, Vijayakka, received the reception invite to be held tomorrow in Mumbai along with a saree worth Rs 10,000, she wasn't invited for the wedding, which took place yesterday.

Her nani hails from Mudalady near Kateel. An uncle of Shilpa, on condition of anonymity, said while all close relatives were invited for the wedding yesterday as well as the reception to be held tomorrow, her nani didn't receive the wedding invitation card. Ever since Shilpa's wedding date was announced her family members at her ancestral house at Niddodi, Mudalpady near Kateel were fed-up with the constant media attention. They were often known to misguide media persons who visited the house to gather information on the actress's wedding.
Crying Horse

Raj Kundra was in a hotel one and a half kilometres away from Bawa Villa, Khandala where Shilpa Shetty was waiting for the baraat. As the road connecting the two always has chock-a-block traffic, the police gave Raj permission for only a few minutes. As Raj's baraat was on its way to Bawa Villa, the ghodi stumbled. The horse's leg was a bit bruised and the loud firecrackers only added to its misery. They somehow managed to steady the horse and the baraat proceeded to the wedding venue.

Shilpa's governess on cloud nine

Among those who are excited about Shilpa's wedding in the coastal town, is Premakka, who worked for the Shetty family as a governess for Shilpa and her younger sister Shamita. She was more than happy that 'her child' is getting married. Premakka, who hails from Kinnigoli, was with the Shettys for almost ten years. Premakka also recollects meeting Shilpa when she visited Mangalore in 2007.
Post wedding plans

Post the grand wedding reception in Mumbai tomorrow, the couple plans to visit the Oneness University, Chennai to seek the blessings of their spiritual gurus. They will then proceed to the Bahamas for their honeymoon.

Shaadi business

Tarun Tahiliani had designed Shilpa Shetty's wedding outfit. The baraat took about 30 minutes to reach the wedding venue. The wedding mahurat was at exactly 6.30 pm, which is considered very auspicious. Only 40 guests comprising close family and friends of the couple were invited.

No one from Bollywood was invited except for Vashu and Jackky Bhagani, who are extremely close to Raj Kundra. The couple went to Shilpa Shetty's Mumbai house after the wedding for the bidaai ceremony.

More news,

Spa, tikka and thaali adorn Shilpa wedding

A mix of the traditional and modern marked the Khandala shaadi of the star couple

At the stroke of the twilight hour, Shilpa Shetty wed long-time beau Raj Kundra. The godhuli lagna had specifically been chosen by her mother Sunanda and the family astrologer since it's considered to be the most auspicious time for a wedding this year. Said a source, "The Shettys have always been and will remain an extremely superstitious family. They have always consulted astrological timings and charts before embarking on any major event."
"In fact", adds the source, "Raj had approached a numerologist at the beginning of their two-year affair to find out whether he could get married to Shilpa. At the time, he was going through an acronymous divorce with his first wife Kavita and he wanted to be very clear about the way ahead."
The decision on the godhuli lagna, added the source, seemed to have worked well as Shilpa's father Surendra, who was hospitalised with malaria and could not make it to the mehendi and sangeet ceremonies on Saturday, could attend the wedding yesterday and give her away.
Bunt ceremony
Shilpa married Raj yesterday in a traditional south Indian Bunt ceremony at her best friend Kiran Bawa's bungalow in Khandala. Said a source close to Shilpa, "At around 2.30 pm, Shilpa and Raj had a traditional Mangalorean pooja, which takes place before the wedding. It was attended by both their families and close friends."
After the pooja, Raj left for Duke's Hotel in Khandala and then arrived in a chariot at 5 pm to the wedding venue at Bawa Villa with his baraat. The source added, "All the guests invited to the wedding were pampered by Kiran's spa and salon staff, who had been specially brought over for the wedding. The second floor of Bawa Villa resembled a mini-spa."
After Raj entered the Bawa bungalow, Shilpa's sister Shamita, mother Sunanda and father received him in the traditional style as they would their damaad — with a tikka and thaali. "The wedding ceremony started at 6 pm and was according to the rites of Godhuli lagna. It was over by 8 pm," said the source.
Glitter and glitz
At the wedding, Shilpa wore a traditional red and gold south Indian brocade sari designed embellished all over with ruby and Swarovski pearls. It was designed by Tarun Tahiliani. Designer-duo Shantanu-Nikhil designed a maroon and gold sherwani for Raj. Shilpa wore a kamarbandh with rubies and Swarovski crystals, while Raj wore a neckpiece with precious stones.
B-town attendance was limited. "Apart from Shilpa's family and close friends, there were Vashu and Jackie Bhagnani (Raj has business ties with them) and Rohit and Ronit Roy (who handled the security)," said the source. Shilpa and Raj returned to Mumbai last night immediately after the wedding.
Khaana peena
A lavish buffet comprising Hyderabadi and Awadhi dishes from Mumbai's Foodlink restaurant was served to the guests after the wedding.
The sangeet ceremony held on November 21 had Shilpa and Raj dance to Teri Ore from Singh is Kinng, while Shilpa's family performed a skit imitating Raj's family and danced to Aahun Aahun from Love Aaj Kal. The entire sangeet ceremony was choreographed by Ganesh Hegde. Daler Mehendi sang a few numbers too.

Did you know?

Shilpa had first met Raj in 2007 when she won the reality show Celebrity Big Brother in the UK. The couple got engaged on October 24 this year in a private ceremony in Mumbai at Raj's Juhu flat.
Shilpa and Raj are also business associates, co-owning the Indian Premier League team Rajasthan Royals and a food chain in the UK.

arrived on a white horse to claim his Bollywood bride Shilpa Shetty.

He rode from his hotel to Kiran Bawa's bungalow, where the blushing bride was waiting, while his baaratis danced around with great gusto. Dressed in a sherwani, heavily garlanded and bearing a sword, Raj was greeted by bridesmaid Shamita at the entrance to the bungalow with a big hug. His men carried bundles of crisp, 500 rupee notes which they distributed to the band while Raj walked to the lavishly decorated mandap for the pheras which was done in the Bunt style with Shilpa looking every inch the South Indian bride. The actress was seen getting emotional after the ceremony and crying as she hugged her father who had discharged himself from hospital following a stomach infection to be there. It was almost 9.20 pm when the couple stepped out to pose for the media. They then left for Mumbai as Shilpa's bidaai was to be done from her house in Lokhandwala.

Meanwhile, BT's wedding correspondent reports that all of the 70 guests who were present at the wedding had a hairdresser, a makeup artist, and a chauffer-driven car at their disposal. Even their hotel rooms were done up with gift hampers, pink roses and chocolate fudge. For the two days that the guests were in Khandala, there was buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner at the Bawa bungalow and a wedding menu made up of cuisines from 72 countries! Bridesmaid Shamita Shetty, who lost out on the chance to win her reality show prize money after leaving it midway for Shilpa's wedding, was disappointed that she could not make up by successfully hiding the dulha's joote. Raj was apparently supposed to give her Rs 51 lakhs for his shoes!

Yesterday in Mumbai, the couple had their court marriage. Since the saat pheras was strictly for family and close friends, Shilpa and Raj have planned a lavish reception for Bollywood and their business associates today at a suburban five-star. The married couple along with their families will then head to Tirupathi and from there to the Oneness University in Chennai to seek blessings from Shilpa's gurus, Amma and Bhagwan. They will then come back to Mumbai to leave for their week-long honeymoon at the Bahamas.

Shilpa's big fat Indian wedding

"Itna thak gaya hun dance kar ke ki lag raha hai jaise kisi ne mujhe maara hai pakad ke" — these were Raj Kundra's first words to a friend the morning after he brought home his bride, Mrs Shilpa Raj Kundra.

The wedding that was solemnised on Sunday evening at Bawa Villa in Khandala was a fairytale moment — the dcor was done up completely in red, with velvet, satin, roses and candles decking the venue, and the mandap was designed like a south Indian temple.

Film producer Vashu Bhagnani and son Jackky were the only guests from the entertainment industry. Actors Rohit and Ronit Roy were also present, as they had organised the security for the event. The dinner was a mix of South Indian and Punjabi dishes.

Punjabiyan di shaan
The baarat came in true Punjabi style, with a maroon sherwani-clad Raj riding on a silver chariot. The ghodi kept making too many stoppages, which made Raj joke to his friends that "bahut nakhre waali ghodi hai" (the horse is very naughty).

Dressed in a red and gold sari, Shilpa choked back tears as the couple completed the last phera. Afterwards, the family headed to Shilpa's house for the bidaii ceremony.

Shilpa's friend Kiran Bawa says, "The bidaii ceremony was very short since Raj was very tired. Shilpa's mother performed the traditional milk ceremony and the couple then headed to Raj's house in Juhu." Yesterday, the couple were with family and friends playing post-wedding couples' games.

All ain't welcome
Though the wedding was a close-knit affair, not everyone related to Shilpa were present at the do. Sources say that Shilpa's maternal grandmother, Vijayakka, was not invited for the wedding because of family differences.

Shamita's Rs 5-lakh demand

Shilpa's sister, actress Shamita Shetty, demanded Rs 5 lakh of brother-in-law Raj Kundra for returning his shoes at the wedding. But Shamita had to settle with Rs 4 lakh less, as her jijaji negotiated well and brought the price down to Rs 1 lakh. Earlier, the Kundras had been told that Shamita was going to ask for Rs 51 lakh, so they were surprised by her demand, said a source.

Tonight's plans

Tonight, the reception is being held at Grand Hyatt, Mumbai, where the lavish menu will include Italian, Mughlai and Indian cuisines. Punjabi pop band RDB will perform in front of 400 guests. Shilpa will wear a champagne-gold sari decked with 8,000 crystals. Raj will sport a black sherwani.

More news,

B-Town buzz is that Shilpa Shetty's wedding outfit by Tarun Tahiliani and her pure uncut diamond jewellery from Anmol Jewellers (including a belt) cost a bomb. Buzz is that it all cost Rs 3 crore (enough to finance a small-budget film). Apparently, husband Raj Kundra footed the bill... no wonder she wore so much bling!
