Happy Diwali gals...hope the light of hope fulfills your heart home and the whole year through,,,

I am posting some JB Specials...hope you like...encourage others to do the same..

Diwali Party

Jai looked around, searching for his wife. She was here few minutes ago, serving tea and coffee to the family. He waited till the sparkler Anu was twirling died down. "Anu come and sit down. We will do some more fireworks later on."

Anu dropped the burnt out wire in a bucket of water. "Mama…I want to do colourful shower things you brought. I like those."

Jai tousled the hair of his six year old niece, "Haan later…first l have to go and find mami."

Anu giggled, "Mami doesn't like fireworks…she told me. She is scared of them."

The arch of his brow went up as Jai digested the news parted by his niece's lips. He walked Anu to where the ladies were sitting and walked into the house.

The kitchen was empty, except piles of dishes covering the counter. Jai sighed, she wasn't in the lounge either, must be upstairs. Taking two stairs at the time, he climbed the stairs. The door of his bedroom was open, but no light coming through. Giving a scan to his left and right corridor, he headed for his room. It was dark in the room, the lamps normally left on were turned off.

The flutter of silk curtains drew his attention to the balcony. The doors were wide open and he could see the rows of diyas that Bani had lit earlier. They were still burning against the dark sky. Even though the balcony seemed empty, Jai made his way towards, sensing his wife was there. He stopped by the open doors and peeked out. Sure enough in the corner, curled up on the wicker lounger, his wife sat, staring at the sky. She had not heard him, for she was still engrossed in her thoughts. Jai walked up to her and bent down and grazed his lips across the bare skin of her shoulder and neck. "What are you doing up here, all alone?" he asked huskily, inhaling the flowery scent left on her silky hair from the shampoo.

Bani raised her hand and clasped his. "Nothing…just thinking about maa and papa…how we used to spend Diwali…when we were together." Her voice was heavy with emotions, of regret, of loneliness. Jai kneeled down at the side of the lounger and wrapped his hands around her waist and rested his head on her lap.

"I am sorry…I wish they were here with you too darling…but I am sure they wouldn't want you to be unhappy tonight.'

Her fingers ran idly through his thick hair. "I know…Jai. But this year…even Rano is not with me. She is too busy to come down. I miss her…and Pia. We used to have so much fun…getting together with friends and have fireworks parties at each others houses all night…Never used to get to bed until two or three in the morning. And then next morning…maa would try and wake us up early…" Bani trailed off, smiling to herself as her mind drifted back.

Jai raised his face up and stared at his wife. In the faint glow of the diyas he could see the gentle smile on her face, the flicker of glints in her golden brown pool as some pleasant memories ran through her mind. He touched the side of her face. Bani turned her gaze down at him. "I love you…" she whispered, bending slightly to touch his lips with hers. Jai pulled her off the lounge and sat her on his lap, his hands reaching across the back. Their liplock was broken by a giggle.

Bani pulled away hastily and stared at Anu peeking at them through the fingers over her eyes. "I saw you kissy…kissy." She giggled some more and then dropped her hands down. Jai stood up and pulled her ponytail. "What do you want imp?" he growled at her.

"Phatakas…you promised. And I been waiting and waiting. You didn't come back. So I came up." Anu giggled, "You were kissing and…"

Jai clamped his hand down on Anu's mouth. "That is enough. Promise you won't tell anyone…only then we will do phatakas."

"I promise…I didn't see anything." Anu said making a sober face, but her eyes twinkling.

Jai holding her hand, "Chalo then…" he held his other hand out to Bani. "Come one…you too. I am not letting you sit up here alone.' Wrapping his arm around her, he tugged her close and whispered suggestively, "We will finish off what we started later on...we will have our own diwali party…"

Bani blushed and tried to pry herself free, shivers of anticipations fluttered across her body.

Kheer

The smell of kheer wafted from the kitchen to spread around the house. The occupant of the study stopped his fingers on the keyboard and sniffed. He smiled, as a vision of piping hot bowl of kheer floated in front of his eyes. His stomach made complaining noise as saliva oozed on his tongue. Without another thought, he got up and marched out of his study and towards the kitchen. Before he could put a foot in the kitchen, Rati, their plump kitchen maid blocked his entrance. She pointed at Jai's foot, "Na…joohte…na. Kichin rule sir…not joohta…madam's order." And Rati looked at the mistress of the house, stirring the pot of kheer.

Bani looked up and across the steamy curtain rising from the pot, her eyes twinkling with laughter as she noticed her husband's face show his irritation. He bent down to undo his lace and slipped his shoes off. Rati stepped aside and said slyly, "Joothe chua…abhi haath dohi dalo sir…" Jai turned and glared at Rati and then marched off to the sink to wash his hands as a peal of laughter followed him. Rati grinned at Bani and scooted out of the kitchen, giving privacy to her mistress.

Jai wiped his hands and came up to where Bani was still stirring the kheer. "I am hungry Bani…I can smell the kheer all the way in the study. After so many days…why are you making kheer today?" he asked as an afterthought struck him.

Bani stopped stirring and looked at him. "You should know…been telling you everyday for the past few days. Don't you register anything when you go in and out of house."

Jai scratched the back of his neck and he pursed his brow. "Well everything looks the same outside. There's been no flooding or earthquake that I know of."

"Uff…I am not talking about that…you don't see the decorations and lights in the shops. The fireworks that has been going off at night for a week. Or the line ups at the mithai shops." Bani grumbled as she scraped the bottom of the kheer pot again.

"Oh…you are talking about Diwali…but we celebrate that every year…the usual khanna, peena and visiting friends." Jai picked up a bowl from the shelf and put it on the counter.

"Yes…the kheer is for tonight. I hope you haven't forgotten, we have invited family over…masi should be arriving soon with Karuna." Bani concentrated on her stirring.

Jai tapped the bowl on the counter to get Bani's attention. Bani gave him a look. Jai arched his brow, smirked and looked at the bowl.

"You can't have any…you have to wait for dinner." Bani spoke with a smile.

"Just a little…I will be your taster…tell you if it needs anything…"

Bani put her hands on the hips. "I haven't forgotten how well you know how food should taste."

Jai took her hands of her hips and put them around his waist. "you know you look too cute…when you try to be bossy. Par…just remember…we are partners…we don't boss each other…we accommodate each other. And right now…my stomach would really love half a bowl of your delicious kheer…please…nah…I will give you your pressie early."

Bani giggled seeing her six foot two husband pouting like a child. "Did you buy me another pressie? Because you already gave me an early pressie."

"I did…I don't remember." Jai said tugging at the strands of hair that had come loose form the clip holding back Bani's hair.

Bani blushed, "Haan…but it will take time before…well before…" she trailed off, uncertain how to say what she wanted.

Jai lifted Bani up and perched her on the counter. "Stop talking in riddles…what did I give you or buy you?"

"My kheer…it will burn." Bani said trying to evade the question.

"Never mind…answer me." Jai said hedging her in by placing his hands to the side of her on the counter.

Bani wandered her eyes over Jai's face and then leaned closer to his face and whispered, "I am pregnant."

Jai's eyes widen, "Pregnant! When? How? No…I mean…how long?"

"A month."

"And I didn't know! You did not tell me." Jai accused.

"Hell…I didn't know myself…until yesterday. And I thought I would share it with you tonight." Bani said quietly.

Jai lifted her up and twirled, "Ok…you shared. I am happy…too happy…and now…sit here one moment." Jai sat her back on the counter and went to the stove. He stirred the kheer, took some out in the bowl and came back to Bani. He grinned as he held a spoon to her mouth, "Congratulations…mommy…baby…" Bani opened her mouth and licked the kheer off the spoon. Jai took a spoonful, "Congratulations…me…daddy." And put the spoon in his mouth. Jai shared the kheer with Bani, while rambling haphazardly about the impending parenthood.

"ahem…Didi…bahut saare kaam baki hai…" Rati said looking somewhat embarrassed at having to break up the intimate moment.

Jai looked at Bani, rubbing the slight white line at the corner of her mouth, "Should do be doing all this? May be you should rest in bed…take it easy. I always ordered some food."

Bani slid off the counter, "I am perfectly fine. Doctor said just to avoid lifting heavy things. Now that you…have had you kheer, kindly leave. Let me cook…next year…you may have to cater…because I will be too busy too cook." She darted a cheeky glance at Jai.

Jai sighed happily and then walked up to Rati, "No more holidays for you Rati…your madam will need lots of help from now on." Then taking his wallet out, he took a handful of notes out and put them in Rati's hand. "Happy diwali…meethai bantna aapki ghar mai."

Rati gave a flabbergasted look at the notes and then at Jai and then at Bani, who was grinning happily at Rati.

Jai whistled as he strolled away from the kitchen, leaving Rati still wondering what did Bani put in the kheer to make Jai so happy.

Box of Fireworks

The young girl clung to her sister's arm, her glasses slipping to the tip of her nose. She was almost as tall as the girl whose arm she was clutching. "Didi...how many more can I get?" she asked, her eyes travelling along the table lined with firecracker boxes. The other girl looked at the piece of paper and did some calculations. Before she could reply, another young girl in jeans and tank, with hair coloured light brown came up. She made a few male heads turn and evoke few whistles. But she ignored it all, as if she was used to it.

"Di…I have to get this…please…please. Just one box." She waved the box in front of her sister.

"How much is it?" the girl asked.

""250…I have 50 rupees still."

"Ok, let me see if I have enough money to pay for everything you both want." She started her calculations again, her lips puckering, her forehead wrinkled.

A pair of coal black eyes was watching it all with interest. Most of the people here were parents with kids or a group of giggling teenage girls or a noisy group of boys. He found the trio interesting. The lanky youngster, the beautiful teenager and the older girl, who was wearing a almost washed out salwaar khameez, her hair pulled back tight into ponytail and no makeup on her face, unlike the sister. But her eyes had pulled his gaze for a second look. They were big, almond shape and deep warm brown in colour. They seemed to light up her face when she was frowning like she was yesterday. He moved a little closer, eager to overhear and see what was going on.

"Pia…I don't have enough. With all the things you want to buy…I only have 150 rupees left." She looked up and her eyes clashed with his. He gave a smile, but she did not return it, instead looked down again.

"Rano…please. How about you take this two boxes off…then di will have enough. I promise I will buy something from my allowance next month," Pia pleaded with her sister.

"Di…" Rano whined at her sister. And then pursing her lips, "Fine…but it is going to cost you double…100 rupees…you owe me."

Pia waved the box, knocking it into his shoulder. "Thanks…Rano…I love you. Oops…" she turned and stared at Jai. "I hope I didn't hurt you…I just got a little excited."

The guy smiled, "No…I am fine. Hi…I Jai and you are?"

"Pia…nice to meet you Jai…Happy Diwali!" she extended her hand, giving him a flirtatious smile. Jai shook her hands. "Happy Diwali Pia. Looks like you are going to have a fun night…lighting firecrackers."

Pia nodded, "Yes…one night in the year…when we can become little kids again." Jai looked over at Bani and Rano who were waiting for Pia to finish talking.

"I think your friends are waiting." Jai said softly.

"No,,,not friends…my sister." She turned and pointed at the older girl, "My didi Bani…and my young sister Rano."

"Hi…Happy Diwali!"

"Happy Diwali sir." Both of them replied in quietly.

"Pia we should go…" Bani said little impatiently.

Pia gave her the box, "Di…why don't you go and pay…I will meet you in a few minutes."

Jai noticed the annoyed glare Bani darted Pia.

"Bani…it is Bani right?" Jai came a little closer. "Why don't you let me treat your sisters? I don't have any younger brothers and sisters. Please don't say no…I would make me very happy."

Bani pursed her lips into thin like and then said in brittle voice. "No thank you. I have money to pay for the fireworks."

Pia put her arms through Bani's, "Come on di…please let Jai pay for them. It is very kind of him."

Bani shook her head, "No Pia…we should pay for our things. How many times have I told you? I will wait for you by the door…come on Rano." Without another look, Bani took hold of Rano's hand and walked off.

Pia pulled a face, "I am sorry…Jai. Di is very stubborn when it comes to things. Anyway…what are doing here…if not to buy fireworks."

Jai gave a flitting glance at Bani and Rano walking away before turning and looking at Pia. "Oh …I am here to order fireworks for annual party that we throw for people that work for me."

"Nice boss!" Pia flicked her hair back and dazzled him with a smile.

Jai gave an embarrassed look. "It's just a tradition…my family has been doing for years." He looked thoughtful for a moment. "Hey…why don't you and your sisters come to the party. Here…" he fished in his pockets and pulled some tickets out. "I was going to give this to the manager here…but I can always send them tomorrow." Jai took out three tickets. "Please come…all three of you. You will have fun. It's very casual, no dress code. We just want people to enjoy themselves." He put the tickets in Pia's hand.

"Thanks Jai. You are such a sweet person. I shall definitely come." Pia pocketed the tickets and gave a little. "See ya…Jai." Jai smiled, "See you Pia…don't forget to come."

At the door, Bani glowered at Pia. "How many times do I have to tell you not to be so friendly with strangers…especially men.?"

Pia just shrugged and took a bag from Bani's hand, 'Chill Di…I can take care of myself. I know the difference the type of men…ones who are genuine and ones who are faking."

Rano pulled out her tongue at Pia, "Miss Know it all…How do you know he is not one of those that likes to play around with young girls…I mean he wasn't exactly young. Looks like he is forty."

"No he did not. Just because he looks mature…doesn't mean he is old. Anyway…I am not arguing. I think Jai is nice…and he invited us to Diwali party and I am going."

"What!" spluttered Bani. "You are not going anywhere Pia."

"I am and you two are coming with me. If you are so worried about me…then you will tag along to protect me."

Bani just snorted angrily.

XXXXX

"Di…how do I look?" Pia twirled, showing off her lengha.

"I think you should cover up. Your back is hardly covered and look how short the top is." Bani scowled as the looked at the choli held close by only two strings at the back.

"No way di…this is meant to worn to show off. And who knows may be there is some one from a modelling agency there…I might catch his eyes…and voila…I would be walking the ramps of the fashion shows soon."

"Chalu…disgusting!" Rano made a face. "I don't know why you have to be almost naken to be a model. Come di..lets go."

Bani put a shawl around her shoulders. She was wearing one of her mother's silk sari. Glad that she could fit into her mother's blouses. She loved the few silk saris that she had saved after her parents death. They meant so much to her. It gave her sense of her mother was with her when she wore one of the sari.

The large hall was packed with people. There was a lot of noise as people talked at the top of their voice, children ran around and music blared from the speakers. Bani, Rano and Pia walked around a little and then found a corner where they could sit. "Wow…so many people. I didn't realize it would such a big party di. I wonder where he is…I would like him to see that we are here."

"I am sure he is busy Pia. Look at all the people…how would you find him." Bani muttered, pulling her shawl closer around her.

"I am sure I will find him. Anyway…shall we get something to eat? Di you can wait here…Rano and I will get something a plate for you." Bani kept quiet and watched apprehensively as the two girls walked away.

She was lost in her thoughts until a voice called out her name. "Bani…"

Bani looked up to see Jai standing in front of her. He looked different, dressed in a deep red sherwani, his hair gelled back, showing off his deep forehead. An elderly lady was standing next to him. Bani stood up and folder her hand. "Namaste."

Jai greeted back, "Namaste Bani…this is my masi."

Bani bent and touched masi's feet. Masi placed her hand on top of Bani's head. "I hope you always be happy Bani."

Bani smiled, her face softening as she gazed at masi. "Thank you masi. Subh Deepawali masi."

"Subh Deepawali Bani…I hope maa Laxmi smiles on you always."

"Where are your sister? Jai was telling me you have two sister."

Bani frowned, why would Jai talk about them to his masi. "They went to get some food masi. They should be here soon." Bani turned and looked at Jai, "Thank you…for inviting us to the party." She said in stiff voice.

"No need to thank me. I am glad you came. I hope you enjoy yourself."

"Munna…why don't I take them with me to our table. I will give them company while you do your rounds." Masi gave a lazy wink and stifled a smile.

"Ok..masi. See you later." Jai wandered away leaving Bani with masi. Masi chatted with Bani, waiting for Pia and Rano to come up. Few minutes later Pia and Rano arrived with plates piled high with food.

Hey di…the food is amazing…so much choice." Pia set the plates down in front of Bani.

"Pia…Rano…this is Jai's masi." Bani made the introductions.

"Masi..Namaste masi…" Both of them bent and touched masi's feet.

Masi beamed happily at them. "You girls are wonderful…nowdays not many kids like to touch feet. Chalo…take your plates. Come and meet rest of the family."

The girls tagged behind masi, weaving among people until they reached a far corner where a group of people sat. From their looks and clothes, it was obvious they were not workers. Masi made quick introductions. The mixture of young and old gave polite nods and greeting to the girls.

"Come girls…sit down and have your food. We will have ours until Jai comes." Masi said as she sat next to another elderly lady. "Biji…zyaada bhook toh nahi lagina."

The old lady's eyes twinkled, "Nahi…mainu toh kuch chak liya tha…peche jake ke."

"Haan masi…maa aur mein khana kaisa hai dekhne gaye the toh thora chak hi liya." A middle aged man who masi had introduced as Aditya…her damad."

Aditya gave a pleasant smile to the girls, "Come on girls…don't be shy…Eat…we are just family."

Bani smiled politely. "Nahi uncle we will wait for Mr Walia too."

Aditya looked quizzically at Bani, "Mr Walia…aree our munna is not that old. No one calls him so formally."

Masi shushed Aditya. "Leave it Adi…Bani is just being respectful. You don't go around calling people by first names." Adi winked at Masi, "Haan…you are right…especially some special one…like our Bani. I must say, she is prettier than how Jai described her."

Biji, slapped her son on the head, "Ullu…what are you saying? Chup kar."

Aditya rubbed the back of her head. Bani looked puzzled by the comments.

Biji, masi and Adi soon had the girls talking about themselves, Pia and Rano chatted much more easily than Bani, who still had reservation of being among strangers.

Biji nudged Masi, "Oye…agaya tera munna. Kuch jaldi kar…chidiya nahi toh urr jayegi."

Masi smiled almost dotingly at Jai. "Munna…come sit down. You must be tired. Adi…go and tell them to bring food for us."

Adi saluted to masi, grinned at he girls and ran off.

"Jai…wondering where you were. Great party…great food. Really delicious."

"Thanks Pia." Rano who felt completely at ease gave a shy smile to Jai. "Mr Walia…it was very kind of you to invite us. We have never been to such a big party before."

"Good…you will love the fireworks…that we will have soon…outside." Jai said glancing quickly at Bani. Adi arrived with few servers bearing plates of food, he supervised them. Bani nibbled at her food, too aware of the looks given her way. She felt awkward. About half an hour later, a loud announcement invited everyone to go outside to see the fireworks.

"Come this way…everyone." Adi spoke and gestured towards an entrace. The door led them to a staircase which led them up to a terrace. There were chairs laid out for them to sit. "Come Bani…sit with us." Masi asked Bani to join her and Biji.

Bani sat down and waited for the first fireworks to go off. She wrapped her shawl around her. "Cold?" a voice behind her ask.

Bani turned slightly to see Jai standing behind her. She shook her head.

"You don't seem to like me."

Bani did not turn her head, she looked down at the clasped hand, "No…nothing like that. I am just careful. After all I don't know you."

She heard a deep sigh, "Kash…I wish I could say that…I feel as if I have known you…always."

Her heart did a somersault, she felt as if she was going to faint. Her fingernails dug into side of her palms, the pain somehow relieved the feeling.

"Why…why do…say that?" Bani stammered.

"I don't know. I just feel…"

Bani jumped almost as the first fireworks lit the sky. She shivered. For a tiny moment the bright light cast a shadow of Jai over her.

She heard him move softly behind her. "Would you like to go for a walk?" she heard him ask softly. She looked around…everyone was engrossed in the fireworks going off. Bani stood up and turned and faced him, her eyes resting on his. Jai took hold of her elbow and guided her around the chair, "This way…" He led her across the terrace and then down a staircase that led down to gardens. The gardens stretched to the side and were lit up with twinkling lights. Odd sets of people were strolling around.

They walked in silence, the sound of fireworks getting softer. After a while they came to a boundary wall. Jai stopped. "I guess we better turn back. I think the fireworks are over too."

Bani nodded in agreement. The sound had stopped and the starry sky was back to itself. Bani felt a little tussle going on inside her, should she thank him or not…apologize for being rude or not. She heard another deep sigh and then his voice, "You better say what you want to say…it's no good to have an inner battle…sometimes its just better to say what you want to say."

Bani felt a rush of tears in her eyes. How petty it seemed to not say thank you? To judge someone even before you know them. She looked up, his face a little fuzzy through the teary film. "I am sorry…I was rude to you the other day. And…thank you…thank you for being so kind…I haven't seen Pia and Rano so happy in a long time."

The touch of his hand on her arm sent nervous shiver inside her. "I accept your apology…and I hope you feel enjoyed the party too."

"Yes…it was very nice to meet your family. You are very lucky to have such wonderful family." Bani said wistfully, remembering…there was no family for her and her sisters. With the death of her parents, the relatives had disappeared too…no one wanted the burden of three girls.

Sensing the loneliness, the lack of immediate family, Jai said in a sincere voice, "You know…you are welcome to visit us anytime you want. I think masi and dadi would love your company. Think of my family as yours."

"Thank you." Bani felt an overwhelming sensation flood her body…a sense of discarding some hidden burden. "Happy Diwali…Mr Walia." A shy smile formed on her lips as she looked up at him before walking back along the path they had come.
