Mr. Natwarlal - Pardesiya This 1979 movie also stars Amitabh and Rekha, some of their greatest performances seem to have been when they acted together. A comedy action movie where Rekha has timed her punch lines well. As the village belly in love with the police inspector, she attracts his attention through the song Pardesiya sung near the river's edge with her gang of girls. With not much of a role, she certainly makes her presence felt with her dancing. |
Khubsoorat- Sare niyam tod do, niyam pe chalna chod do... This song sung by Asha Bhonsle, Usha Mangeshkar and Kalyani has Rekha playing the role of Manju trying to teach everyone to break rules set down by the mother-in-law of her sister. She is a carefree, smart, good looking girl, who does not really care what the world thinks of her. The world presented here is to be free, enjoy your life, live it as you wish, and not to follow the stupid rules laid down by fuddy-duddy and strict disciplinarians. Written by Gulzar and with music by RD Burman the lyrics, music and acting sets your foot tapping and you feel wild and free wanting to break all rules. Rekha spices up the film with her bubbly act with many amusing episodes. |
Silsila- Yeh kahan aa gaye hum Once again playing the role of the other woman opposite Amitabh they certainly set the screen sizzling. The movie was well timed with the 'break-up' of Rekha and Amitabh. This was the last movie they did together. Rekha as Chandni looks beautiful, with a performance that makes the others in the movie look like amateurs. She has few scenes, but she certainly pulls the attention of the audience to herself. This song shot in Amsterdam among the colorful daffodils, the song is a dream sequence between Amitabh and Rekha, about unfulfilled desires and dreams. |
Umrao Jaan- All her songs Umrao Jaan had music by Khaiyaam and lyrics by Shahryar had Rekha perform kathak mujra's on all. Spectacular is one word that describes Rekha's performance. The story and the songs revolve around Rekha while the other actors are just add-ons. Dil Cheeze Kya Hai, In Aankhon Ki Masti and Yeh Kya Jagah Hai Dosto and all the other songs are timeless and of high quality that still weave a magic that few songs can do today. Each song has become a part of the Indian film history. With Asha Bhonsle singing the songs, her voice in fact is made for Rekha. Rekha implores beautifully with the words Bas ek baar mera kahaan maan lijiye, with superb and flawless dance steps that express the words equally well. Rekha expresses the beauty In Aankhon Ki Masti, Mastaane Hazaaron Hai, while sadness is seen clearly when she sings Yeh Kya Jagah Hai Doston, Yeh Kaunsa Dayaar Hai. Her need to find happiness has ended is rendered beautifully Justajoo Jiski Thi, Usko To Na Paaya Hum Ne. |
Khoon Bhari Maang- Hanste hanste The unglamourous role of Rekha in the first half of the movie leaves one stunned, with no makeup she has enacted the role of a simple housewife well. In the second half her glamorous look is back competing with Sonu Walia (Nandini) her protagonist who plots her murder with her second husband, where she is equally fantastic. She deserved the Filmfare award for this role in 1988. One of Rekha's best films it opens with the song Hanste hanste, sung by Sadhan Sargam and Nitin Mukesh portraying happiness, hope and feeling of abandonment very easily while Rekha as a matronly, unglamorous wife and mother of two children happy in her own world is easy to accept and believe. |
Ijazat- Katra katra milti hai Naseeruddin Shah and Rekha both great actors win the hearts of the audience with their easy on the eyes performance. A separated couple, who meet at an empty railway station, and remember their past, juxtaposed with beautiful ghazals all written by Gulzar. Rekha is simply amazing, as the wife who leaves home without her husband's Ijazat. Beautiful musical score by Panchamda adds to the feeling that the movie has a lot to say without really saying much. This is Gulzar at his best. The song Katra Katra was sung by Asha Bhonsle and the lyrics were by Gulzar himself. Good song, great music as well as picturisation make this a memorable song. |
