Upcoming telly show Bairi Piya has already generated interest among telly viewers for its subject.
A still from Bairi Piya

Based on the real life horrifying incidents of farmer suicides in the Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, Bairi Piya that comes from Balaji Telefilms promises to highlight the severe problems faced by farmers in the recent years. Supriya Kumari, plays the protagonist, Amoli, an 18-year-old girl. Amoli is the object of desire of a wealthy village thakur who takes advantage of her under the pretense of saving her family from financial doom.

Although Supriya had heard about farmer suicides before, it was only after she came on board the project that she realised the seriousness of the issue. "This show will bring across the difficulties faced by the farmers. The aam junta needs to know why farmers are so poor. Why are they perpetually in debt is also something that the show aims at putting across," says Supriya, who was earlier seen in the serial Agle Janam Mohe Bitiya Hi Kijo. "I was quite impressed when I heard the concept of the show. I just knew that I had to be a part of it. And after my first show, this was a great platform," she says.

Bairi Piya premieres on September 21 on Colors and will be on air Monday- Friday at 8.30 pm.
