I'm a very private person, not really a Page 3 kind of person. My party quotient depends on my mood; good company and good music are what keeps me buzzing at a party. But given a choice, I would prefer to just hang out with a bunch of my close friends at home, where I can just be myself and not be Priyanka Chopra.

The growing up years...
(The minute we asked Priyanka about her childhood, Shahid interrupted: "Oh, ask Priyanka's father to talk about her as a kid... he just won't stop!" to which she laughed and said: "But that's because I was such a fabulous kid!")
I've had many phases as a kid, and honestly, I don't think I've grown up completely yet! I was this gawky, under-confident 13-year-old who suffered from a huge inferiority complex... I used to believe that I looked like my brother's nanny! I remember feeling almost invisible in school; I used to eat my lunch alone in the bathroom! Then I went to school in America, and that was a complete change for me — from a middle-class Army background to an independent style of living. I was a tomboy then, and before I could realise what was happening I was Miss World! Teenage years are the most significant years of a child's life, they lay the foundation for adulthood. One thing I learnt was this, and it is something I want to tell all youngsters — It's okay to be not perfect, it's okay to not look like a fashion magazine model. Everybody is good at something, we just have to identify and build upon our strengths.

I'm the other extreme of partying; I go out a little more than once a year! The only reason you see me at parties is because I have to go as part of my job. Partying is not a lifestyle for me, it's a great escape. I prefer parties where I can be myself, where I know no one is judging me, where I can enjoy a conversation. And if there's dancing, then I don't need anything else — I can dance with anyone, and no, I don't have to be drunk to do that!

The growing up years...
I was the naughtiest kid in my locality in Delhi. I used to play cricket for eight hours a day and was a celebrity of sorts — known for having broken every window pane in the area! I wasn't much into academics; once, in the second standard, I actually ran away from school... my mom came with the cops to my friend's house to take me back home! My grandparents were a huge influence during my growing up years. When I was 10, we shifted to Mumbai and the next three years were the most terrible, disastrous ones of my life! I was an outcast in school and couldn't 'fit in'. But in college, I was quite the popular kid. I strongly believe in vocational education, and hence took up arts, knowing that it would help me in the future. It is important to give children opportunities to recognise their interests and passions. I also joined Shiamak Davar's dance classes, did theatre workshops, became an assistant director — all the time I was working towards becoming an actor. I went through over 100 screen tests and rejections; people said I looked 16 at 21 and would never make it, but I was certain that this was my calling.

I really like the running away from school story. It seems like I am the only one, who didn't know that one here. But it is quite a story to tell. Shahid must have quite the entertaining kid back in the day.
