Salman wins Dance India Dance

After four months of hard work, only four made it to the grand finale of Dance India Dance (Zee TV): Alisha Singh, Jai Kumar Nair, Siddhesh Pai and Salman Khan. And though the competition was very tough between them, it was Salman Khan who came out on top and won the title.

Apart from winning the coveted Golden Taqdeer Ki Topi, the 23-year-old lad from Bangalore also won a contract of Rs. 50 lakh with Zee TV. Along with this, he also got an exclusive contract to star with superstar Salman Khan in Boney Kapoor's upcoming movie Wanted.

How do you feel?
The experience is amazing and out of this world. I thank Allah for everything! Remo sir is the best thing that has happened to me.

What will do with the amount you have won?
I have not really thought about it. I only thought of competing, dancing and winning. Now from here, I need to move ahead because it's just the beginning.

When you first entered the competition, did you expect to win?

Right from the first day of the show, I knew I had to win. God gave me this opportunity to showcase my talent so I tried very hard to give my best to my performances. If my performances were better than the previous round then I would consider my expectations met.

You were never the judges' favourite, but something always clicked with you. What do you have to say about this?
When we were selected from the 18 contestants, we were chosen for our performances and not for our stunts. I was awarded the Khoobsurat Performer Of The Week and it was because of my dance. With dance, I added an extra element of spice. It was great!

What do you have to say about your mentor Remo D' Souza?
Remo sir is the best thing that has happened to me. I thank Allah for giving me such a good mentor. I have won this competition only because of him. You see me here today with the golden cap, it's only because of Remo sir.

Which, according to you, was your best performance?
My best performance is yet to come. What you have seen on the show were just glimpses. There are a lot of favourites, the list is endless.

Which was your toughest performance?
Frankly speaking, every week I have been in pain, hurt or have been bleeding. I've had spasms as well. There was a time when I came straight from the hospital and had to perform for two episodes. One performance, where I got frightened for a moment, was my fire act. I burnt my eyelid. That was very close and I could have lost my eyesight. All the precautions were taken but anything can happen at the last moment.

You come from a city where not many people are crazy about reality shows. Yet you still got the highest number of votes…

If you watched the show, I never asked for votes but only blessings. I believed in myself and worked hard. The Almighty was there with me and finally, my hard work paid off.

Other than you, who do you think was the most deserving person for the win?
Among the three finalists Alisha, Siddesh Pai and Salman, Salman was the most deserving contestant (laughs). No, really. I have literally slogged. I've worked hard and have sacrificed a lot for this.

How excited are you to meet Salman Khan and perform with him in the movie Wanted?
I am very excited and I am looking forward to meeting him as well as performing with him in the film.

How far do you think winning a reality show helps one's career?
Well, it definitely does. So far, the journey has been good. Now it's my responsibility to further my career and see how to grow.

What have you learnt from the show?
Everything depends on hard work. If you have the will, nobody can stop you from doing what you want to do.

Who do you think is the best dancer in Bollywood?
Hrithik Roshan.

What did you do before you came to Mumbai?
I am a mechanical engineer and I was looking forward to my MS (post graduation) in the UK or Australia. When I got this offer, I thought why not give it a shot?

What's next in the pipeline?
Three months ago I had no idea that I would come to Mumbai. I never thought people would appreciate my performances and I would be known. I am open to all options. All I can say is that whatever I do, I will give my cent percent to it.

A superstar in the making

A superstar in the making, contestant of Dance India Dance's Mayuresh Wadkar talks to us about his likes/dislikes, his past and future.

Who/what inspired your dancing career?
Dancing was actually an inborn talent in me. I loved dancing since I was a child and really liked Prabhu Deva and Michael Jackson as they are brilliant dancers. I used to love watching them dance and copying their movements. When I dance and perform, I feel like I'm flying, it's a magical feeing.

Tell us something about your family and personal life.
My dad works with Air India as an Engineer; my mom is a housewife, and my sister is currently doing Fashion Designing. I have always wanted to be an actor and I took the first step towards acting by working on my dancing. Before we shifted to Mumbai, my dad was in the air force and we lived in Madras. We lived in a chawl (very small colony) as my dad did not have a job at that time. After this I realized I had to help out and do something, so I worked very hard and did some odd jobs trying to meet ends. I did many things such as worked as a salesman, and also did some editing in Balaji, soon after which, I got a chance to join Terrence Sir's Dance Academy on a three year scholarship.

As a DID contestant, what was your happiest moment?

My happiest moment as a DID contestant was when I got eliminated. At that moment, everyone was so upset and all the people there including the driver, the cameraman were all so upset and said, 'If Mayuresh is eliminated the show is over." That really touched me and I was so happy to hear that everyone cared so much about me and I had left my mark and everyone loved me so much.

Do you believe in love?
Yes, I truly do believe in love. I believe that there is not only one kind of love. There is the love between parents and children, between friends, husband/wife and all of these relations and bonds are so strong and portray a different type of love. Love is very important in life and is everywhere.

What are your future goals/aspirations?
I have always wanted to be an actor, so now I am going to work on my acting skills. I am also never going to leave my dancing as it is more of a passion for me than work. I just want to do something where I am appreciated and will continue to work hard.

What is your favorite holiday spot?
My favorite holiday spot is Mauritius.

What is your favorite food?

I mainly love Indian food and Italian food.

What is your favorite song?
My favorite song is Pehla Nasha.

Who is your favorite actress?
My favorite actresses are Kajol and Sushmita Sen.

Is there any message that you would like to send to your fans?
I just want to say thank you for all your love and support. I also want to say that you have supported me so much and I am grateful for that. Also, as you guys are my fans, I have become a fan of yours, as you have showered so much love on me. I will always be grateful to you for that.

Salman dances his way to the top

Salman

Bangalore based Salman has emerged winner of Zee TV's dance reality show Dance India Dance. A Mechanical Engineer 23- year- old Salman takes life as it comes. All set to fly abroad for further studies destiny had something else in store for him.

Having beaten equally talented dancers like Alisha, Siddhesh and Jai, Salman will now be performing with Salman Khan in the film Wanted. Salman spoke to Tellychakkar minutes after he won DID.

What were the emotions you went through when you were declared the winner?

Oh! for a minute or two I just looked up and thanked God for everything that has happened so far. Be it for the failures or victories. I owe it all to Him.

Were you positive of winning the title when you entered in the show?

Yes, I was. As they say one should be focused and so did I. I just kept working towards my goal. I knew about the big opportunity waiting at the end of the show but I decided to concentrate more on my performances. I wanted to give my best whenever I performed. What gave me immense pleasure and satisfaction was when my performance turned out to be better than the earlier one. It also increased my expectations multifold.

Salman will be seen performing with Salman Khan in his upcoming movie Wanted. How does it feel?

Oh! I am very excited. I am looking forward to shaking a leg or two with the hunk Salman Khan.

Which according to you is your best performance so far?

My best performance is yet to come. Whatever you have seen on DID are just flashes of our best performances. My rope malkhamb act (Tu hi re), my duets with Khushboo and Alisha, I liked everything.

Which was your toughest performance on the show?

Frankly speaking, every week I have been reeling in pain and I have been hurt all the time. I had bled profusely, had spasms, been admitted to the hospital. At times I have come straight from the hospital for the shoot. So every week was a Herculean task for me. But one performance in particular which frightened me for sure was my fire act. I had burnt my eye-lid while doing the act and had I not been fortunate I could have lost my eye-sight. For all such dare-devil acts, precautionary measures were taken but one can't guarantee that no mishap will take place. I thank God I am safe.

Southern India doesn't watch much of Hindi GECs and this affects the voting. So were you apprehensive about the fact that people from your native place (Hyderabad) wouldn't vote for you?

Honestly, since the time I entered the competition I had never asked for votes from the viewers. I have only requested them to bestow their blessings on me. I believe in myself and Allah. I just did my hard work and at the end hard work pays off.

Most contestants tried to bag sympathy votes with sob stories but you were the only one who didn't?

I just wanted to dance. I never cried on stage. I came here for a healthy dance competition. I didn't want anyone to say that he won due to sympathy. When the top 18 were chosen, it was purely on the basis of their dancing skills. And that is what we were there for – to showcase the best we had. Whenever I bagged the title of the best performer of the week, it was solely because of my dance. It was my dance that has gotten me so far.

Where from here?

Ab khuda raste kholega (Now God will open the doors for me). Four months back, I had no clue that I would come down to Mumbai and participate on the show. Never even in my dreams had I thought that I would be so appreciated and people will acknowledge my hard work and will like me. I thank all who have supported me. Currently I am open to all options.

What have you learned from the show?

I have learned that everything comes with the hard work. So if you are hard-working there is nothing than can stop you. You write your own destiny.

Who according to you was the deserving to win the title other than you?

Other than me, out of the four participants Jai, Alisha, Siddhesh and Salman, it was Salman who was the most deserving one (laughs). I have given my blood and sweat to the show.

Whose eviction left you disheartened the most?

Prince Gupta.

When did you generate interest in dancing?

I think ever since I was born. I am told that I used to jump in my cradle when I heard music. I have been dancing ever since.

Who is your favourite Bollywood dancer?

Undoubtedly, Hrithik Roshan.

Where's the party tonight?

Wherever, Remo Sir is.
