Medicine and Indian kids

Hi guys

Why is it that so many Indian parents encourage their kids to do medicine, especially when their are so many other professions out there in which u can qualify quicker and earn more?

Every year in India thousands of kids take the Pre-Medical Test and do really well but only a very small percentage actually do get a place. They say that 70% of seats are reserved for the poor so that they can get our of the rut, then 20% of seats are booked by the rich who pay for their kids to do medicine while that leaves 10% of seats for kids who actually get it on their own merit (Percentages are averages).

Do u think this is unfair? Because every year we hear of kids in India who commit sucide coz they couldn't get into medicine.

But on the other hand medicine is a very secure profession and gives alot of satisfaction, happiness and scope for discovery to people who do enter this profession.

So do u think medicine will continue being the most popular profession for indians or do u think more indians should branch out and seek other options?

first of all i'd like to say taht it is not correct that 70% of seats r for poor ppl. there r sum seats reserved for ppl who are terned as Scheduled castes, totally there are 14 castes that r listed as schduled coz they always faced discrimantion in the history anyways..moving on to the discussion ... sum indian parents force thier children to do that. ppl living in india actually have only two main choices- medical or non-medical.. medical involves all the stuff u mentioned and non-medical is like all types of engineering. there r arts(basically involves history which only few ppl like to choose) and commerce(involves business) too but usually ppl wid lower percentages get into these fields.
so, obviously if u have got high percentage, ur parenst think that u can b succesful and shud choose either medical or non-medical (in india, non-medical doesnt involve biology and medical does), i mean sum ppl have got only this choice-- if u rnt gud at things like maths , they have to choose medical and obviously therez toooooooo much competition in india abt that so ppl don get into it even if u have lik marks in 80s.

i mean its not really that parents r being unfair but sum ppl have got only tis choice nd wen they don get it they commit sucide😔

the problem in india is these r the high paying jobs none else r. hope i m not going offtopic.

It may not be 70% in all cities but in sum cities there are that many seats for the poor.
Yea I agree that schduled caste kids should get an opportunity and they should be encouraged since it will only help the country prosper. But in the process the middleclass kids are not getting what they deserve.

You said kids with 80% are not getting medicine....thats not true...there are kids who have 97% and they are not getting it.
My cousin in Jodhpur came first in her school in 12th exams and she was one of the few kids to get through the PMT but still she got medicine in a place 8 hours away from her home...eventhough she should have got it in her home city.....where is the justice in that?

But yea i agree that doctors get paid well in india and it's a very good job to have compared to many others.

I am just a negative about med in india...otherwise in other countries I think the system is good 😳

i meant 80% is not a really bad rite?? u need work very hard in order to get like very high marks like 97 in medical. the problem is this that there is lot of competition in india in this field ths y ppl don get admissions. like if 10 middle class ppl have 98% and obviously they ll get in.

u r rite abt the systems in other countries thaz y ppl r migrating to other countries coz therez really no surity that u ll get a job there even after completing ur studies😔.

justice... ummm... u noe wat? problem yahan hai ki govt kisi ko ignore nahi kar sakti. we have done things like "untouchability" for poor ppl in the past that i ll say, hum apne kiye ki saza bhugat rahein hain sach mein.. isse jyada kuch nahi keh sakti main. insaan jaisi karta hai waisi bharta hai 😔really if v luk at it.. govt jst cant do anything maybtheyll increase the kota for middle class but kitna ku kardenge

i think the problem in Indian society is that that the ppl r divided into different classes. sumtimes i feel therez nothin called "Equality"😔

Yea well said heart girl.....equality is the main issue.
There are different classes in every country...even in Uk, USA and china there are different classes but it's not so apparent because everyone is treated equally.

Here a kid from a not so well off family has as much chance of getting into medicine as a kid from a rich family. It's a clear system...where u get the grades, fulfil all the requirements and u get ur place at med school.

But in India like u said there is no assurity of anything....kids are working their butts off and still not getting what they want, so it must be frustrating for them.
I think they should just make the system equal and get rid of reserved seats for the poor, rich etc...
They should make the system fair...atleast it will hurt kids less if they dont make it 😊

A little correction - it's medicine AND Engineering. So a kid either has to be an 'engineer' or a 'doctor'. And if none, than an 'IAS officer'.🤢

supergirl u talked about medicine being the top choice..and i agree with minnie...that engineering and IAS is also not far behind..and incidentally..most of my pals from science stream..are into engg colleges now...so i think engg is attracting more ppl as compared to dostors..

It's a mis conception that doctors are teh best paid... doctors always get a job..or even if tehy dnt get one..they can practice..so u will neva be out of job ...unlike in engg....

also.. parents ka fascination with making their kids doictors dates back many yrs..(. like my mum had high hopes that iw ud take sci..and become..doctor..but voila..i took commerce n m dng CA..(.. about 20-30 odd yrs back..doctor n engg. was the best career choice..... as teher were not too many options..and parents stil believe so.. i reallyd nt know why....

but now tiem,s are changing..otehr options and high paying ones are attracting kids..but doctors still tops teh list..maily beacuse of teh prestige of being a doctor and being able to help ppl...

and no i dnt believe 70% wanan be docs..a

and also that ppl trtying to becoem docs..who dnt succeed suicide...it migth be any otehr rweason or failure in any other filed ya.

whatever it might be like being a docter, i think i'll stick with being a nursery teacher 😃
