Saif Ali Khan shares his nervousness and excitement as the release of his maiden home production nears
Inspired by Clint Eastwood, Saif Ali Khan finally decides to take the big step into production. "Eastwood was told that the worst step he could take in his career was to become a producer and he went ahead to do just that. So that's why I went ahead and did that too," explains Khan, who has partnered with Dinesh Vijan to form Illuminati Films, which is releasing its first film, Love Aaj Kal, on July 31.
"Production is like going to war," jokes Khan, "We take an entire army to the shoot and they have to fight so many hardships to get the right shots."
While being a producer doubled Khan's responsibilities on the set, he insists that it did not affect his acting at all, "The director Imtiaz Ali told me from the first day that when I was on the set he didn't want me to be the producer. I listened to him and concentrated only on my role," says Khan.
Khan feels the script was a perfect choice for his first production, "It's a typical love story and everyone loves a love story," smiles the charmer, dressed casually in denims and a white tee.
Lucky for him, Vijan did all the running around and Khan was mainly involved for his creative aspects like the script selection, publicity ideas and cutting the trailer.
And yet Khan feels he's come out of the film as a different person. "I feel more responsible now," says the infamous Romeo. "I know what it's like to be on the other side."
Khan plays a double role in the movie. One is Veer, a Sardar in 1965, and the other is Jai, a contemporary Londoner.
Khan's excited about playing a Sikh, a community favoured by many Bollywoodwallahs. "In fact, I dubbed twice to make sure that my Punjabi accent was perfect," he adds. While Veer romances Harleen, played by a newcomer, Jai romances Meera, or Deepika Padukone.
"Working with Deepika was a learning experience for me," says the actor who is known for being hyperactive and full of ideas while shooting. "Deepika is a very earthy person. She's so calm and yet so passionate. I feel lucky to have her in my film."
Love Aaj Kal deals with how relationships have changed with the times and when we ask Khan if he's the Kal or Aaj sort of lover,
he blushes. "Being in love is a beautiful emotion and cannot change with time. The way of expressing it might change but the feeling never will."
