T20 tie-ups, TV shows and more, a change of release dates will have the next two months packed with promotional activity


The strike between producers and distributors has been called off leading to a scramble for release dates. It helps that everyone, producers in particular are in an accommodating mood and making way for each others movies. What the fluid schedule has done, however, is put marketing and publicity plans in a tizzy. Television channels that had a dry run due to the strike are now likely to be spoilt for choice.

Kambakkht Ishq to be released on July 3 as opposed to its earlier July 10 release is perhaps the only film that has been in news with more than a month's lead. Whether it is Sylvester Stallone's appearance in the film or Kareena Kapoor's bikini – enough information has been put out to whet the audience appetite.

Dinesh Vijan, producer Illuminati Films coming up with Love Aaj Kal says, "All producers have come to a mutual agreement as far as the dates are concerned and since we have firmed up for July 31 there is a clear run for six-seven weeks for promotions which is good."

The film's first look was unveiled on June 9 and followed up with a T20 cricket match tie-up in London the coming weekend to kickstart its promotion. Vijan confirmed the plans saying that Saif, Deepika and Imtiaz would be present for the event. "Deepika and Saif will be there to cheer the teams at Lords. T20 showcases the evolution of cricket from test cricket to limited over matches and our film is about the way that relationships have evolved down the years so it is a perfect fit," says Vijan.

YRF which has New York coming up has been low-key barring reports about Katrina-John friendship which the production house has distanced itself from the coverage.

"As always, we will be working on our release and promotional plans on a film to film requirement. Our endeavour has always been to stand out from the clutter and it is something that we always think through," concluded Rafiq Gangjee, Vice-President, Marketing & Communications, YRF.

Kaminey, a UTV presentation directed by Vishal Bhardwaj had started off with the rushes when Delhi-6 released. A sustained build-up, however, did not take place as the strike came into effect soon after from April 4. And now stars shooting for different projects is posing a bit of a problem.

Shahid Kapoor was to perform at IIFA this week as part of Kaminey promotion cancelled due to hi commitment to film shootings.

According to a press statement sent out by his PR agency Nine Winds Media and Entertainment Ltd, though the actor was looking forward to his performance, the dates could not be adjusted as three of his films ( Kaminey, Pathshala and Yashraj Films untitled ) are ready for release and there is patchwork shoot remaining for Ken Ghosh's untitled film. Since the dates of IIFA were clashing with the dates he had committed to a producer, Shahid has had to pull out of it this year.

"I was looking forward to performing at IIFA and showcasing Kaminey, however my commitment to my producer has to be honoured and I regret being unable to attend this year," said Kapoor in his statement. Publicist Parul Gossain did confirm that there would be a host of meaningful promotional activity involving Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra. The audio release has been slated for June last week.

According to Prabhat Choudhary, Spice, which has handled promotion strategy for films like Ghajini, there would be back to back releases in near term due to multiplex standoff, the schedule of marketing and promotions would be tight. A whole lot of activities would be woven in a short span of time, making the marketing campaign condensed rather than spread out. Actually it can work better as the impact is high. We also assume that there would be greater excitement among the audiences as there was a period of starvation as afar as movies are concerned. The task for the marketers becomes to achieve maximum during a short span of time also the clutter of films would pose a challenge in terms of definitely branding a film."
