HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY

"A mother is the truest friend we have, when trials heavy and sudden fall upon us; when adversity takes the place of prosperity; when friends who rejoice with us in our sunshine desert us; when trouble thickens around us, still will she cling to us, and endeavour by her kind precepts and counsels to dissipate the clouds of darkness, and cause peace to return to our hearts." 'Washington Irving

True as it is, mothers are the most beautiful people on earth! It's also said that God couldn't be with us physically, so he made mother. Mothers play different roles in our lives, our first teacher, who teaches us to talk, walk and every important lesson of our life, she makes us ready to face the entire world, she behaves like a warm caretaker when we are ill, she becomes a friend as we grow up and talk and ease us in every phase of life. She makes sure problems don't enter our life, and if they do, she makes an effort to kick them out.

Words cannot describe what mothers are to us and what they have done for us. Mother's Day has been created to give people an opportunity to tell their mothers how much they love them. This day has been celebrated since a long time. The history of Mother's Day is ambiguous. It has different origins in the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

In the UK, Mother's Day originated in 1600s and is traditionally known as "Mothering Sunday". Research shows that UK was the first country to dedicate a day for mothers. However, some historians believe that the first celebration of Mother's Day was the earliest springtime festivals in Rome and Greece, dedicated to the mother goddesses, Rhea and Cybele. In the United States, mother's day was started in 1870 by Julia Ward Howe. Hence it is difficult to generalise the origin of Mother's Day.

It has only been a few years that people have started celebrating Mother's Day in Pakistan. I have never been in favour of western cultures, but I have never been against this one either. The reason being that mothers are special enough to deserve at least a day that is dedicated especially to them. I have never been in favour of westernised culture or festivals but I'm completely for Mother's Day and think we all should celebrate it and dedicate this day to our beloved mothers.

Here are a few ways to impress your mom this mother's day:

Send her a Mother's Day card. A handmade one would be extra special, but if you aren't good at drawing a simple card would do just as good. Write your feelings for her in it.

Give her a present. And I'm not talking about just flowers! Get something apart from flowers too. The gift need not be expensive. She will be looking at your gestures and not the quality of the present. Try to get something she really needs or wants. This will make her happier.

Thank her for being your Mom. She is the reason of your existence, so don't forget to thank her.

Take her out for dinner. When you can spend the rest of the year dining out with friends, why not dedicate this special day just for her? If you can't go out, try to make something for her all by yourself and if that's too much, the least you can do is get a cake for her.

If you are away from her at the moment, go and meet her, or call her. She will feel special!

Tell her that you love her. We often believe that it's understood that we love our mothers, but saying it is important! Writing it in the card doesn't get you full credit, you must say that to your mom!

On a personal note, I like to give my mother a gift that is longer lasting than traditional flowers, I would like to tell her how much I love her and that I am incomplete without her. I'd like to say "I owe my success to you mom! This one's for you! I love you."
