Thanks Rajnish. You have given us a lot of interesting stories to think about.
Yeah, this is new to me as well. As is the one about Krishna killing the dhobi who insulted him, but was the reborn same dhobi who caused Sita's misery.
Even if she was just 4-5, I thought the curse was overkill - sort of like the torture Rishi Mandavya got as a punishment from Dharma for torturing a butterfly with a blade of grass (the rishi cursed Dharma to be born as Vidura). Besides, did Sita force the hubby parrot to leave? After all, if she had its wife in captivity, he could have stayed with her too, could he not? Also, if the parrot was reborn as the dhobi, was the parrots wife the dhobi's wife who was kicked out?
In Valmiki, when Sita gets the news from Lakshman that she's to be abandoned, she wails and wonders whether in a previous life, she had caused a couple to be separated. Surely, had this incident happened, she'd have remembered it, just as Dasharath remembered Shravan Kumar?
And speaking of curses, I've always wondered why Bhrigu's curse on Vishnu had to have repercussions more on Sita than Rama.

Rishi mandava was punished by dharm itself. Dharm should not punish anyone for his/her quilt if was done before age of 12. Here Parrot curse sita.
That's why Rishi Mandavya retaliated, and cursed Dharma to be re-born as dasi-putra Vidura.
But the curse on Sita - even had she been of age - doesn't look justified. Had Sita actually separated the parrot couple, then I'd agree that given the right age, the curse might have been justified. But here, Sita simply imprisoned the wife parrot, but didn't stop the hubby parrot from staying - at least, that's what I read here. So since she wasn't guilty of splitting a marriage, the curse that she received - even granting that she deserved one in the first place - was disproportionate.
This doesn't mean that I don't agree with you - I do - sins committed before the age of 12 should not be cursed.

I'm also hearing this story for the first time...but like Sam, I was also finding it hard to believe this b/c Sita maya was always a kind-hearted lady...but then again u did say she was only 4 or 5 y/o at the time...so i will try to factor that in....
But this is def a wonderful story Rajnish...thank you so much for sharing it with us....i kinda felt bad for the two birdies....you know wut else i heard is that in BRC's Mahabharat....Shri Krishna upon returning to Mathura comes across a Dhobi/Washerman....so the washerman is insulting Shri Krishna there...and here Shri Krishna destroys the washerman, who is supposed to be the same rebirth of the washerman who was the reason of separation of Sita mata from Ramji......and that basically He gave that washerman the punishment from his previous birth!!!!I'm not sure if i'm right or not on this story...but if ne1 knows otherwise please feel free to correct me!!!
