Women's World Cup - Group B
Bowral
Pakistan Women 57 v India Women 58-0
India Women beat Pakistan Women by 10 wkts

India began their World Cup campaign in superb style by crushing Pakistan by 10 wickets at the Bradman Oval in Bowral.

Having won the toss and put their opponents in, India's bowlers proceeded to skittle out their near-neighbours for just 57 in 29 overs.

Opening bowler Rumeli Dhar led the way with 3-7 while seamer Amita Sharma and leg spinner Priyanka Roy both picked up two wickets apiece.

Only two Pakistan players managed to reach double figures, Sana Mir top-scoring with 17 from 54 balls. Opener Nain Abidi made 11.

India had no problems in reaching such a small target, openers Anagha Deshpande and Anjum Chopra wrapping up the win with 40 overs to spare.

Wicketkeeper Deshpande finished on 26 not out from 37 balls, while Chopra's unbeaten 17 took just 23 deliveries.

With a win already to their name, India can expect a much tougher challenge in their next group fixture - against England in North Sydney on Tuesday.

Pakistan are next in action on Monday, when they face Sri Lanka, who also lost their opening game, at the Manuka Oval in Canberra.

England Women 277-5 (S C Taylor 101, C M G Atkins 50) v Sri Lanka Women 177-7
England Women beat Sri Lanka Women by 100 runs

Claire Taylor hit a century as England got their World Cup campaign off to the perfect start against Sri Lanka in Canberra.

The 33-year-old hit her eighth one-day ton and was ably supported by opener Caroline Atkins as England posted 277 for five after being put in to bat.

Atkins (50) and Sarah Taylor (38) laid the foundations with an opening stand of 80 before Taylor added another 72 with the opener for the second wicket.

Captain Charlotte Edwards (27) and Lydia Greenway (32 not out) also did their bit to guide England to an impressive total.

Taylor, who also notched hundreds in previous World Cup meetings with Sri Lanka in 2000 and 2005, was delighted to start the competition in such fine touch.

Early runs

"I'm pleased to get some runs early in the tournament," she said after scoring 101 from 95 balls. "The Sri Lankans must be sick of the sight of me, but all due respect to them for keeping going in the field with the ball and attacking us with the bat.

"I'm looking forward to playing against India on Tuesday - which I think could be the key match in our group."

Sri Lanka's response started solidly enough as they advanced to 48 before losing the first wicket, but from then on England did not look back.

Suwini de Alwis top-scored with 37, but Sri Lanka never looked like getting close as they ended on 177 for seven, Laura Marsh the pick of the bowlers with three for 31 from her 10 overs.

Women's World Cup - Group B
Newcastle
South Africa Women 116 (S R Taylor 4-17) v West Indies Women 117-8
West Indies Women beat South Africa Women by 2 wkts

The West Indies put themselves in pole position to reach the Super Six stage of the ICC Womens World Cup with a tense two-wicket win over South Africa.

In a low-scoring thriller in Newcastle, the Proteas collapsed from 50-1 to 116 all out after winning the toss and deciding to bat first.

Teenager Stafanie Taylor did the majority of the damage, picking up 4-17 with her right-arm off-spin, while there were three needless run outs.

Worked hard

Alicia Smith fell in such fashion having worked hard to reach 46 from 109 balls, one of only three double-figure scores in the final total.

Once the South Africa opener was out the innings subsided in a hurry, the final seven wickets falling for just 12 runs.

Trisha Chetty (17), who helped put on 37 for the first wicket with Smith, and Shandre Fritz (18) were the only other players to get more than seven.

The West Indies found batting just as tough in their run chase, openers Taylor and Deandra Dottin both dismissed with just 16 runs on the board.

Shanel Daley, who finished as top-scorer with 26, and Afy Fletcher added 45 in 22.1 overs for the third wicket to steady the ship.

Contributions

However, a run out ended their alliance and it needed contributions from Stacy-Ann King (13) and Cordel Jack (19) to push their side closer to victory.

Their 38-run stand came up in just 12 overs - comparatively rapid progress considering the sedate pace of the game - before the pair departed within the space of one run.

By then the damage had been done, though, the Windies managing to limp over the finishing line with eight balls to spare.

Next up for Merissa Aguilleira's side are back-to-back clashes with the two heavyweights of Group B - Australia and New Zealand.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Zealand were left singing in the rain at the North Sydney Oval after overcoming Australia in their opening ICC World Cup match.

The White Ferns triumphed by 13 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis method after bad weather forced an early finish to proceedings.

Australia were at that stage on 132-6 in the 33rd over chasing a target of 206 in the battle of the trans-Tasman rivals.

Jodie Fields (26 not out) and Ellyse Perry, who was unbeaten on 17, appeared to be setting the game up for a thrilling finish with an unbroken partnership of 32.

Good start

Opener Shelley Nitschke had given five-time winners Australia a good start in their run chase, hitting two fours and a six before falling for 27.

Skipper Karen Rolton managed a maximum, as well as three boundaries, in her 21 before becoming the second of three wickets for seamer Kate Pulford.

Jessica Cameron (15) also got going before getting out, and the constant loss of wickets proved crucial for the hosts in the final reckoning.

New Zealand's total of 205 had been built on a solid half century from right-handed opener Haidee Tiffen.

Partnership

The 29-year-old faced 113 balls to compile 57, sharing a third-wicket partnership of 67 with Amy Satterthwaite, who made 38.

Suzie Bates and Sara McGlashan both contributed 29 but from 171-3 the innings fell away badly, the last seven wickets going down for 34 runs.

Although expensive, Perry picked up 3-40 in her six overs while there were two wickets apiece from the off-spin of Erin Osborne and Lisa Sthalekar.

Australia's innings was hit throughout by rain and the defending champions will hope to get their Group B campaign back on track when they face South Africa in Newcastle on Tuesday.

Women's World Cup - Group B
Canberra
Pakistan Women 161-7 Innings Complete v Sri Lanka Women 104 (H A S D Siriwardene 58)
Pakistan Women beat Sri Lanka Women by 57 runs

Pakistan underlined their bid for a place in the Super Six stage of the ICC Women's World Cup with a 57-run victory against Sri Lanka in Canberra on Monday.

After Urooj Mumtaz won the toss and elected to bat first, Pakistan reached 161-7 in 50 overs.

In reply, Sri Lanka were bowled out for 104 in 39.4 overs, despite a fighting half-century by captain Shashikala Siriwardena.

Fast bowler Qanita Jalil was the star of Pakistan's victory, finishing with figures of 3-33 having earlier hit a rapid 19 off 20 balls.

Qanita was well supported by all-rounder Sana Mir, who followed up her priceless 22 not out with 2-18.

The victory was Pakistan's first over Sri Lanka in 19 ODIs and also their maiden win in the World Cup after six straight defeats.

Pakistan suffered a 10-wicket defeat to India in the opener on Saturday.

They now stand third in Group B with one win and one defeat, while Sri Lanka are without a win in their two matches.

In the final round of matches on Thursday, Pakistan will play England, while Sri Lanka will play India.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

England booked their place in the Super Sixes stage of the ICC Women's World Cup with a nine-wicket win over India at the North Sydney Oval.

Caroline Atkins and Claire Taylor hit 69 runs each, while Holly Colvin took 3-22 as England proved too strong for the 2005 beaten finalists.

And having already seen off Sri Lanka by 100 runs, England are currently unbeaten in the tournament.

Head coach Mark Lane said: "It was a much improved performance in all three disciplines today.

"It was good to see Holly Colvin coming into her own and taking 22 for three. We were excellent in the field with Lydia Greenway taking three catches.

"After a slow start with the bat Caroline improved her scoring rate and ended up with 69 not out and was awarded the player of the match.

Blistering

"It was another blistering performance from Claire Taylor ending the game with a huge six."

England were set 169 for victory after Mithali Raj hit 59 and Amita Sharma, batting at ten in the order, smashed 33 off 24 balls.

Sarah Taylor had set England on their way with 27 before she was caught by Thirush Kamini off Priyanka Roy.

However Atkins and Taylor combined to see England home with an unbroken stand of 125.

Both players finished on 69 not out, with Taylor's knock coming off 65 and including nine fours and England's only six.

am enjoying tournament are you??
