Eri (Lake) Kaatha (who guarded) Rama: Rama who guarded the lake
In Mathuranthakam, 1 1/2 drive from Chennai city, is a Ram temple. This story is about the times when the Brits ruled India. During that time, this town was under a thoughtless British collector.
Beside this temple is a huge lake. During the rainy season, the levee that held the lake water from overflowing its banks was badly damaged. If something was not done to repair the levee the water would overflow its banks due to heavy flooding and damage the town, the farms, and the cattle. One stormy and rainy night, the people of the town asked the Brit collector to do something about the broken levee. The British collector laughed at the townsfolk's concern and pooh-poohed the suggestion of the townsfolk. He jokingly asked them to pray to their Ram in the temple next to the lake. Most of the people evacuated the town according to the British order. The only people left behind were the diehards working on the levee and the priests who were chanting slokas and vedas asking for Divine intervention.
That night the British collector had a dream. Ram and Lakshman appeared in his dream with their bows and arrows walking on the banks of the lake. They told him that they were guarding the lake and the water will not overflow. The Englishman had no idea who these warriors were but he woke up sweating. The badly damaged levee did not break its banks during the heavy rains at night. Next morning, (the rain had stopped) the Brit collector rushed out and told the story to his subordinates who then invited him to the moring darshan at the sanctum. When he entered the sanctum he saw the murtis of the same people he had seen in his dream the night before. The Englishman was shaken and trembling as he stood before the murtis with tears trembling down his face.
This incident is found in the stone carvings of the temple recorded by the Englishman himself.
He then built financed a temple for Seeta inside the prahar of the temple.
