Kolkata Knight Riders (also referred to as KKR) is the franchise representing Kolkata in the Indian Premier League, a Twenty20 cricket tournament. The team is led by Sourav Ganguly, who is also the Icon Player for the team, and coached by John Buchanan. The official theme of the team is Korbo, Lorbo, Jeetbo Re (We will do it, Fight for it, Win it) and the official colors are black and gold.

Franchise History

Knight Riders is one of the franchise of the eight team taking part in the Indian Premier League. It was bought by Bollywood actor ShahRukh Khan's Red Chillies Entertainment in partnership with Juhi Chawla Mehta and her husband, Jai Mehta.

Performance

The Knight Riders had a good beginning to the season by winning their first two matches against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Deccan Chargers. Knight Riders' opening batsman Brendon McCullum scored 158 runs in the first match, which is a record for the highest runs ever scored by a batsman in a Twenty-20 match.[1] However, the team started experiencing failures and lost consecutive four matches. The team managed to stage a comeback of sorts by winning next three matches based on strong performances by Sourav and Shoaib Akhtar. But their performance dipped again and lost next three matches, which included their match against Mumbai Indians, in which they were bowled out for 67 runs, the lowest score by a team in IPL.[2] When their match against Delhi Daredevils was washed out due to rain, they lost any chance of making it to the semifinals.[3]. The Knight Riders ended their season on a winning note by defeating Kings XI Punjab on their home ground.

Controversy

There were reports of a rift between Shahrukh Khan and Sourav Ganguly over various issues such as team composition, Sourav's choice of batting first in the game against Chennai Super Kings, entertainment tax being imposed for matches played at Eden Gardens (Shahrukh reportedly wanted Sourav to speak to the West Bengal Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharya about it, which was refused by Sourav).[4] It was also reported that Shahrukh Khan bestowed more powers to John Buchanan including giving him full powers to select the team for the following year which was not liked by Sourav.[4] However, the team management issued a statement that the reports of a possible rift are untrue.[5]

Shahrukh Khan was further barred by the International Cricket Council Anti-Corruption Unit from entering the dressing room of the team when matches were in progress. Shahrukh Khan then issued a statement that he would be boycotting the remaining matches of the IPL till the code of conduct was clarified by the IPL authorities.[6].

There were also speculations that Kolkata Knight Riders will shift its base from Kolkata to Ahmedabad because of the money demanded by the C.A.B. But after a meeting with Jagmohan Dalmiya, Shah Rukh Khan assured everyone that his team will stay in Kolkata only.

Financial

Financially, the Knight Riders were easily the most successful franchise in the IPL, achieving a profit of Rs. 13 crore. [7]

Livery

The logo of the team consists of a blazing golden viking helmet against a black background with the name of the team Kolkata Knight Riders written in gold. The main theme of the team Korbo, Lorbo, Jitbo Re (We will do it, Fight for it, Win it) has been created by Vishal-Shekhar duo.[8] A Knight Rider album with several singers and music composers including Usha Uthup and Bappi Lahiri will also be created.[9] The tag line of the team is All the King's Men.[8] The team's official colours are black and gold. Black stands for the courage of Maa Kali and gold stands for the spirit of winning.[9] The jersey was created by Bollywood fashion designer Manish Malhotra.[8] The team also has a mascot named Hoog Lee, who is a lazy Royal Bengal Tiger and loves to eat burgers. The name is a pun on the river Hooghly. The name Knight Riders has been chosen keeping in view the kids and the youth.[8]

Players

Sourav Ganguly, the former captain of the Indian cricket team is the icon player and led the Kolkata franchise. The team also includes the Australian captain Ricky Ponting, allrounder Chris Gayle, David Hussey, Tatenda Taibu and wicket keeper batsman Brendon McCullum. The main bowlers are Shoaib Akhtar, Ishant Sharma, Ashok Dinda, Ajit Agarkar and Murali Karthik. Team also includes Umar Gul, Mohammad Hafeez and Salman Butt. Australian batsman Brad Hodge and Sri Lankan bowler, Ajantha Mendis, are recent additions to the squad. [10][11]

Shah Rukh among bidders for IPL franchise

NEW DELHI, November 13: Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan is among the 90 bidders for a franchise among the teams competing in the $3 million Indian Premier League (IPL) next year, a top Board official said on Tuesday.

Even as some of the top business names have been mentioned among bidders, cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, whose name was also doing the rounds, will not be allowed to bid, as the Board will bar current cricketers from bidding for a franchise.

"Shah Rukh Khan has bid for a franchise," the official said.

According to the official, England-based Lord Swaraj Paul is also in the fray. "There are a lot of prominent businessmen and personalities among the 90 bidders we have received so far," he said.

While the franchisees will also bid for the players, some 'iconic' stars like Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Sourav Ganguly will play only for home teams.

The other prominent bidders are business tycoon Vijay Mallya, Anil Ambani and Hollywood actor Russel Crowe, a cousin of former New Zealand cricket captain Martin Crowe.

The floor price for the bidders has been fixed at $50 million.

Mumbai, the game's hub and home to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) headquarters, and Delhi, where the board was formed in 1928, are amongst the big favourites with bidders.

A final decision on the teams, the league format and other related issues would be taken at an IPL governing council meeting on November 17 in Jaipur.

The IPL, conceived by BCCI vice-president Lalit Modi and backed by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and all 10 Test-playing nations, will comprise 56 matches in Twenty20 format.

Many of the world's top cricketers, like Australians Shane Warne and Glenn McGarth, South Africa captain Graeme Smith, Pakistan's Mohammed Yousuf, New Zealand's Stephen Fleming and Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene, have signed to play in the IPL.

IPL will feature eight teams, with each playing home and away games against the others. After the league matches, the top four teams will play in the semi-finals with the grand final scheduled towards April-end.

Each franchise/team will have a squad of 16 players registered with the BCCI and drawn from its central contract pool. Moreover, each team will also feature under-21 players and those from the BCCI's annual contract.

All matches will be played under floodlights at BCCI-designated stadia across the country for a total prize purse of $3 million, making this the richest cricket tournament in the world.

There will be eight franchises for the first year and the IPL hopes to double that number to 16 by 2010.

Shah Rukh Khan bids for 5 IPL teams

NEW DELHI: Buoyed by Indian cricket team's success at T20 World Cup, BCCI's pathbreaking Indian Premier League (IPL) has received an overwhelming response from India Inc.

The list not only includes business houses such as RIL, ADAG, GMR, DLF, Nirulas, Deccan Chronicle, India Cements, Videocon, UB Group, Deutsche Bank but also bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, who has placed bid through his company, Red Chillies in a consortium with none other than IPL chairman Lalit Modi.

ET has a list of all the companies and consortia which have placed bids on their preferred teams. According to sources, the total bids will amount to over a billion dollar for all the teams, with the Mumbai team being the most sought after. Leading from the front are the Ambani brothers.

While Mukesh Ambani's RIL has placed bid for Mumbai, Delhi and Ahemdabad team under a company called Pratigya, the junior Ambani's ADAG group has applied for all the eight teams.

The ownership for the Delhi team will see a keen tussle between the real-estate major DLF, fast-food bigge Nirula's and the consumer durable giant Videocon. Both Nirula's and Videocon are also vying for the rights over the Chadigarh team. However, for the Mumbai team, Videocon will have to fight it out with the Ambani brothers.

In the South, it seems that liquor-baron Vijay Mallya will have a stroll in the park. The UB Group has placed a strong bid for the Bangalore team. However, for the Hyderabad team, the competition will be tough.

Besides ADAG, infrastructure major GMR group and media company Deccan Chronicle are in the race for ownership of Hyderabad team. Also in the fray is India Cements, which has placed its money on the Chennai team. The company has bid for only one team.

However, the most surprising name on the list is Red Chillies Entertainment, the company owned by Shah Rukh Khan, who has applied in consortium with IPL Chairman Lalit Modi and placed bids for five teams, Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh and Jaipur.

Others in the fray are Deutsche Bank and ICICI's Private Equity firm ICICI Venture. According to IMG India, which has devised the league for BCCI, the real revenues for the team owners will come from the corporate business tickets, which will form almost 50% of the revenues generated from ticket sale.

SRK chucks Hockey, selects Cricket

Shah Rukh Khan surely hit a six straight out of the ground yesterday (Jan 24) when he bagged the ownership of the Kolkata team in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for a staggering $75.9 million (approx Rs. 296 crores).

King Khan who is an ardent sports lover, created a solid impact through his power-packed performance of a hockey-coach in the smash-hit Chak De India and brought our very own National sport hockey back into the reckoning. However, Shah Rukh soon shifted his loyalties towards the more popular sport cricket when he was seen cheering the 'Boys in Blue' as they created history winning the T20 World Cup in South Africa last September. He even made fleeting appearances at a few other One-day matches with his Om Shanti Om co-star, Deepika Padukone, and soon tongues started wagging that SRK is using cricket to promote his films. Before you could say SRK, he distanced himself from anything to do with cricket and even denied any intention of bidding for teams in IPL.

However, after much speculation and deliberation, Khan sprung a surprise when he was in the bidding process for cricket teams for the forthcoming IPL. What's more he along with friends Juhi Chawla and her husband Jai Mehta even bagged the ownership rights of Kolkata team for nearly Rs.300 crores yesterday.

Now with cricket back on King Khan's mind would hockey take a backseat? Your guess is as good as ours. In fact, as the artist of the above picture depicts, King Khan seems to be literally torn apart between Cricket and hockey even as he clearly makes his choice obvious.

SRK's Red Chillies works out plans for IPL Kolkata team

Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies could be painting the sports scene red in time. The company is in the midst of working out plans for the Indian Premier League (IPL) Kolkata team and should be crystallising them in the next two to three days.

This covers the team's composition and the player who will be in the driver's seat. Sourav Ganguly is obviously tipped to slip into the captain's shoes. Interestingly, as things stand, Red Chillies could be venturing into other sporting fields in time, which includes spheres like soccer and hockey.

"We are now in the process of thrashing out the plans and arriving at concrete details. In the next two to three days, things should take shape, when aspects like team composition and captaincy would become clearer. It's too early to spell out these features at the moment. Of course, Shah Rukh is very excited about winning the bid for the Kolkata Team and is planning quite a few things with it," Bobby Chawla, SRK's production chief, told ET. Mr Chawla said SRK had gunned for this bid because "he is extremely passionate about sports".

This had seen him being involved in sports right from his schooling years. But, cricket is bigtime commerce too. "True, cricket is big. But, Shah Rukh is in it essentially because of his passion," Mr Chawla said. A separate management team for sports will be put in place in Red Chillies over time, according to Chawla.

Incidentally, Red Chillies has won ownership rights to the Kolkata Team for the BCCI-backed IPL through a consortium led by Shah Rukh Khan, Juhi Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta. The bid is pegged at $75.09 million.

"This model has brought Bollywood and cricket powers together. Everybody was watching only international cricket till now. IPL will see the best players in the world entering domestic cricket. In tandem, the Twenty 20 format will inject tremendous excitement. The country should develop a greater appetite for this game," Mr Lalit Modi, BCCI vice-president and IPL Council chairman, said.

Mr Modi said that the winners of the bids to the teams will effectively own them and will decide on all facets relating to these properties. "The IPL should gradually evolve like the English Premier League, National Basketball Association and European Football Club," he said.

The IPL tourney is poised to kick off on April 18 in Bangalore and culminate in the finals in end-May in Mumbai. 59 games are set to unfold over a span of 44 days.

Mumbai, January.25:: After a run-in with the BCCI last November, Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan took a swipe at the body saying there should not be any objections if he now watched cricket matches.


"No one should have objection if I watch a match now," said Shah Rukh after he won a bid on Thursday to own Mumbai team in the high-profile Indian Premium League (IPL).

The actor was at the receiving end of an outburst on November 20 by senior BCCI official Ratnakar Shetty who alluded that cricket matches were being used by stars to promote films. The remark, which saw the actor in the centre of a controversy, was in the context of veiled suggestions that his attendance at cricket matches including the T-20 final was an attempt to promote his film Om Shanti Om.

"The one thing I hope that does not happen is that people think I am watching a cricket match to promote my film. I will be supporting my team," Shah Rukh said taking a potshot at the BCCI on Thursday.

Reacting to Shetty's remarks, Shah Rukh had said he does not have to depend on other's platform to push his films.

Shah Rukh had said he was sad and disappointed over the remarks by Shetty that use of platform of cricket by stars for promoting films is 'slightly debatable'. The new film had also echoed in the commentary box during Shah Rukh's chat with TV commentator Rameez Raja at the Jaipur ODI cricket match between India and Pakistan.

BCCI Vice-President Rajiv Shukla had defused the controversy when he said the BCCI has no objection to Shah Rukh or any other film personality coming to watch international cricket matches involving the national side.

Shah Rukh had also said he was not going to watch cricket matches in future if it has not gone well with the BCCI.

But now that the star is the owner of a cricket team the tale may well turn out to be 'Chak de Shah Rukh'.

We have news that Shah Rukh Khan is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that his IPL team has the best of everything. King Khan hasn't yet got his players in place (bidding is yet to take place and we expect SRK to go all out when it does), but he is busy getting a theme song ready to represent his team and taking a personal interest in designing the team's uniform.

Music composers Vishal-Shekhar, who composed the chartbuster music of SRK's latest production Om Shanti Om, have been roped in to compose the song's tune. Reportedly SRK's favourite, Anahita Shroff, will design the uniform.

Our well-placed source from the industry tells us, "On Monday, Vishal-Shekhar met SRK at his office in Bandra. They had a long meeting and SRK briefed them about the kind of tune he wanted. The brief is that it should set the adrenaline flowing."

Vishal confirms the news, saying, "Yes, Shekhar and I met Mr Khan on Monday. We have been given about a month's time to get a tune ready for his IPL team. We've been told that the tune should be one that represents a winner. We all know that Mr Khan plays to win."

So which colour will SRK's team sport? Our source says, "SRK's favourite colour is black, but then cricket uniforms can't be black. So, he'll have to settle for a colour other than black." SRK's favourite designers are Anahita Shroff and Karan Johar. But currently, Karan is very busy with his show Shava Shava. So, Anahita it is. (Anahita is known for her work in Bluffmaster, Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and Dhoom. Anahita has also designed the look for John Abraham and Vivek Oberoi in Kaal, Sushmita Sen in Zindaggi Rocks.)

When asked whether SRK has asked her to start work on his IPL team's uniforms, Ananhita simply said, "Please ask Shah Rukh Khan about this. I don't want to say anything. Yes, I am sure that he is taking a personal interest in the uniforms. He is, after all, a perfectionist."

I wanted to put my money in cricket: SRK

NEW DELHI: Bollywood hearthrob Shahrukh Khan said on Saturday his move to invest in the Indian Premier League for cricket was aimed at providing a platform to youngsters in the sporting arena in the country.

"I am passionate about sports be it cricket, hockey, football or badminton. So investing in IPL is for me a way to promote sports as a profitable career option for youngsters in the country today, not just a gamble," Shahrukh said at an event here to unveil a new campaign in his capacity as brand ambassador of the liquor brand 'Masterstroke'.

"For me, it will be great to change the lives of youngsters who need to go out and channel their youthful aggression for good purposes rather than putting it to destructive use. I think sports is the best option for giving an outlet to the tremendous energy and enthusiasm that the youth possess," Shahrukh said after unveiling a "Don't drink and drive campaign" by Dieageo Radico Distilleries private limited, a joint venture between Diageo and Radico Khaitan.

Shahrukh Khan last month won the rights to sponsor the Kolkata team in the IPL for 75.09 million dollars.

On choosing to put his money on cricket and not a lesser-known sport like hockey or football, Shahrukh, whose film 'Chak De India' about the triumph of an underdog Indian women hockey team against all odds, said, "To begin with, I wanted to put my money on a popular sport like cricket, which is followed like a religion in the country."

Asked whether he did not think that investing in IPL was a gamble, in view of the disastrous performance by India in the T20 international match against Australia on Friday, Shahrukh said, "Frankly speaking, I can't afford to invest in IPL. But then, one cannot shy away from taking a good initiative thinking of it as a gamble."

Talking about his love for sports, the Bollywood 'King Khan' said he would himself have been a sportman if he had not injured himself.

"I was a fairly good sportsman when I joined films. Infact, I started acting in Delhi because I injured myself and hence could not follow a cricket or Soccer career. My love for sports has now led me to train my children in different sporting disciplines," Shahrukh said.

The Bollywood superstar said putting his money in IPL was a way for him to put the money that he had earned over the years to good use rather than whitling it away in leisure activities.

"I feel that if God has given me so much money, instead of spending it on comforts, e.g, to buy a plane for myself, why not invest it in sports so that a career in sports no longer remains a gamble for youngsters in India," he said.

Asked about the anthem or the logo of his IPL team, Shahrukh said, "Nothing is decided as yet. A technical team will be doing all this for me. I do not have so much understanding of technical aspects."

While stating that he had not looked at the business angle before investing in the league, Shahrukh said," I am passionate about a lot of things and do not necessarily look at the business angle of them. The basic aim is to create a platform for youth in sports in India. However, I would want this league to earn a lot of money which can help us to create more platforms for youngsters."

"My principle is whether in a lifetime I can make a change for, say, 70 people by the time I am 70. For me it is important that I can change a few lives in my office and that of a few people who work with me," Shahrukh said.

Speaking about the "Don't drink and Drive Campaign" that will have him featuring him in an ad as brand ambassador of Masterstroke, Shahrukh said, "The campaign intends to raise awareness about responsible drinking and encourage people to never drink and drive."

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - An injury several years ago put paid to Shah Rukh Khan's dream of a career in sports, but the Bollywood superstar hopes his investment in cricket's Twenty20 Indian Premier League (IPL) would help him make amends.

Companies paid millions of dollars last month to buy the eight franchises of the IPL, which begins on April 18. Khan was part of the consortium that clinched the Kolkata franchise for $75.09 million.

"Honestly, I can't afford it," the actor said at a press conference on Saturday. "And from the number-crunching there isn't any great profit either. But that doesn't mean we should be afraid to start new ventures."

Khan's passion for sports, exemplified by his role as a hockey coach in the 2007 blockbuster "Chak De India", is well known.

"When I go to watch a cricket match, people say I am trying to promote my films. That's not true. I love sports," he said.

"Unfortunately, I injured my back when I was in Delhi. In fact, I started acting only because I couldn't follow up on a career in cricket or soccer. I was a reasonably good player."

Nearly two decades later, Khan is Bollywood's biggest draw at the box-office and wants to use his fame and fortune to improve sports infrastructure in the country.

"God has given me status and money," the actor said. "And instead of buying a plane and living an extravagant life, I want to invest money in sports."

"I wish this team would make money so that I can create even more infrastructure for youngsters and possibly for other sports as well."

Khan remained tight-lipped about which cricketers he wants to feature in his team.

"I don't know much about the technical aspects of team-building. I'll leave all decisions to the experts."

NO RECESSION, just correction" — we can add one more Shah Rukhism to our vocabulary after the star's latest press conference in Delhi. Addressing a full house of mediapersons and many pleasantly- surprised shoppers at the premium luxury mall, DLF Emporio, Shah Rukh Khan was every inch the bundle of wit he is known to be. At the venue to launch another model by Tag Heuer, for which he is brand ambassador for, SRK the entertainer took over and talked tirelessly — and not always about the watch he was here to endorse.

Having arrived a bit late he apologised right away to fans who had come in to shop but to their delight bumped into their favourite star. Amongst non- stop chatter and excitement, he had a backhanded, cheery go at the Capital's citiziens: while saying that Delhi was his most favourite city in the world, he added: " It's only here that people love to talk this much. They would continue to talk even when I'm talking to them." Ouch, Delhi! Even before he began with the spiel of talking about the brand, a girl from the crowd shouted out: " Shah Rukh I love you" to which he said, most naturally, " Honey, I love you too and we'd get married soon after this event gets over. There is something about Delhi girls that I like very much." Then one of the sharper ones from his repertoire came. As the photographers requested him to pose, he said, " I will take it all off for you if you liked, but sorry, unlike Aamir I don't have stuff written on my chest." While introducing the model he came to launch — the Carrera Calibre 16 — he said he wouldn't like to go into the technicality of the watch and preferred describing it simply as cool and chunky.

But he did more for the watch than the new- to- the- game and obviously unsavvy- at marketing promo- events boxer Vijender Singh. On being gifted the watch by Shah Rukh, he said, " I don't like watches but I like this one as it is given to me by my favourite star." When the floor opened to questions, it was supposed to be a Q& A session between the media and all those sitting — Jean- Christophe Babin, the CEO of Tag Hueuer, Vijender Singh, boxer, Karun Chandhok, international racing driver and of course, SRK. But as usual the star took over. Unlike other stars who usually shun questions unrelated to the event and insist on only talking about the brand, SRK indulged.

He talked about his next film, Billu Barber to IPL, to the economic situation.

On being asked why he was always picking on Aamir, he said, " I don't pick on him. I just joke", but then almost changing the tone, he contradicted himself by saying, " Not to say I haven't disliked some of the stuff he has said against me, but that I'd take up with him personally."
