When the stars lost their sheen
A walk down memory lane on a breezy evening, I thought of a few stars that were meant to be, but as luck would have it, they axed their own careers.
They started with a bang, and ended, not even with a whimper. They got lost and reduced to ashes, well almost.
JACKIE SHROFF
Jaggu Dada was a HUGE 'Hero' in the 80s and early 90s! His body of work was close to enviable with films like Yudh,Karma, Ram Lakhan, Parinda,Gardish,Rangeela, etc.
Instead of banking on his success, he quickly switched to being a B grade specialist. And then came his fims with the Bijlanis and Usgaonkars. Doodh ka Karz, Laxmanrekha,Latsaab and the works! And how could we forget Stuntman? The 'Amma dekh' number...gawd! The downfall had begun.
Jaggu Dada then turned savage with Aar Ya Paar. Yes we saw him biting into Deepa Sahi and all. He also started a production house and incurred heavy losses, which made him do a few more bad films.
Of late, he did one Bhoot Uncle. No one was amused, not even the kids.
Where's he now? Someone let me know.
MANISHA KOIRALA
She was ethereal and a decent actress too (please overlook ILU ILU ) . She was a potential threat to Madhuri,Karisma & Kajol. And then one fine day, she fell off the ladder and landed in the pits!
She went on a boozing spree and changed her boyfriends every Sunday. The focus was lost in space. Then we saw her in a spate of offensive films, offensive to our sentiments at least.
Lal Baadshah, Laawaris,Hindustaan Ki Kasam,Champion, Chhupa Rustam,Tum and more recently Mehbooba and Tulsi. Huff! Did you just read that?
All along we raved about her talent, even in the listless films. Then why did she do this to us?
I feel she wanted to make quick bucks so that she could buy enough booze. Could be .She boozed and became the size of a bungalow, literally.
Classic tale of stardom to the state of penury.
BHAGYASHREE
She had the world at her feet post her earth shattering debut with 'Maine Pyar Kiya' opposite Salman Khan (1989). But the fool that she was, she decided to act only opposite her Mr.Nobody hubby, Himalaya mountain of a molehill.
One dud after the other she gave us. Paayal,Tyaagi,Qaid Mein Hai Bulbul, etc. We warned her saying,'if you're going to do this to us, please retire'.
She lived up to her good girl image and paid heed to us. She went away . She did return on TV, but we didn't complain. We could flip channels.
These days she sells products on the lines of the 'Asian Sky Shop' and all. How much to pay her to yank her off the air?
GRACY SINGH
Very few make it from TV to films. Gracy was one. No , not one who made it. One who managed a Bollywood debut. And what a debut it was. She was a strong contender for the debut award that year, but the leggy Bips stole the march.
Then her career came dwindling down. What a downfall. She even did B grade flicks like Muskaan and Wajah: A Reason to Kill, with another wannashine (who never managed to shine) Aftab Shivdasani.
Just before we thought she was an extinct bird, she returned with ...hold your brea...Deshdrohi , with the brightest star on the horizon, KRK. Hee hee hee.
People opine her 'bahenji' looks worked against her and that she should go back to doing TV.
I feel the same.
AMISHA PATEL
Amisha had a dream debut with Kaho...Na Pyar Hai. A film that rocked the nation and gave us Hrithik Roshan. She followed it up with one of Indian cinema's biggest hit till date, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha in 2001.
That was it. One after the other, her films bombed miserably. She chose to do Yeh Zindagi ka Safar, Kya Yahi Pyar Hai, Kranti, Yeh Hai Jalwa, Vadaa and what not. We've lost count.
Like her predecessor Manisha, she too concentrated on her love life with Vikram Bhatt, while her contemporaries took over.
She did come back with Honeymoon Travels Pvt.Ltd. Although her performance was lauded, it didn't help her career. She did have a hit with 'Bhool Bhulaiya' wherein her role was of a junior artiste caliber. What made her do the film, is beyond us.
When nothing worked, she shed clothes for YRF's 'Thoda Pyar Thoda Magic'. No one bothered.
