Bollywood fans not only countdown to the release of their favorite stars' films, they also can't wait to get their hands on the music. Soundtracks are not just background music in Bollywood films; they augment the story and give meaning to the film. A terrific soundtrack is not only full of great songs, but also sets the mood and moves the story along. 2008 had some fabulous albums that were the perfect match to the stories that were being told on screen and here is our list of the 10 Best!

10. Kismat Konnection

It certainly seems as if Pritam is a master at putting together a great album. The music for the film, which our reviewer gave a 3.5 star rating, also included one song by Sajid-Wajid. The album had two beautiful lovey-dovey tracks: 'Is This Love (Kahin Na Laage)' and 'Bakhuda Tumhi Ko', along with a couple of tracks so we could we see Shahid do one of the things he does best, dance ('Aai Pappi-Tu Hai Meri Soniye' and 'Move Your Body Now'). The track by Sajid Wajid had a typical Hindi beat 'Soniye Ve (Dhak Dhak Dhak)'. A great outing by Pritam.

9. De Taali

For the music of De Taali , music directors Vishal and Shekar put together an album that was not your typical Hindi film soundtrack. The music was very fresh with a lot of new sounds and some brilliant vocals that, instead of being on top of the music, were actually part of it. Every song was fab and it is very hard to say which was the best, but certainly 'Everybody Put Your Hands Together', 'Hone Lage' and 'Maari Teetri- The Butterfly Song' stood out. If you have not heard this one then def go check it out!

8. Yuuvraaj

One of the things that the brilliant A R Rahman excels at is the composition of his music, and in Yuvvraaj he really showed his mastery for orchestration. The film centered around music, so Rahman not only had to write great songs but he also had to fit the film and add in fantastic orchestral elements. The album has some incredible tracks, but there are also some that missed the mark. Make sure and check out 'Zindagi Zindagi', 'Tu Muskura' and especially 'Tu Meri Dost Hain' with amazing vocals by Benny Dayal!

7. Dostana

Vishal and Shekar make a second appearance on our list for their work on Dostana . This album was full of music that you think of when you think of typical Hindi film music and is done very, very well. The album includes some great singing, and has ballads as well as music to get to your groove! 'Desi Girl' sung by Shankar Mahadevan and Sunidhi Chauhan was one of the most popular tracks of 2008. Their work is always fab and with this 3.5/5 star album they proved it once again.

6. Bachna Ae Haseeno

Once again we have music by the fantastic duo of Vishal-Shekar. For this album they roped in some of the best singers out there, including Sukhwinder Singh, Lucky Ali, Shankar Mahadevan, KK, Sunidhi Chauhan, and Shreya Ghosal. The album is full of brilliant songs and highlights include 'Khuda Jaane', 'Lucky Boy', 'Ahista Ahista', 'Jogi Mahi', and 'Small Town Girl'... ooh, wait, that is almost the whole album. As you can see, it definitely deserves to be on this list!

5. Ghajini

A R Rahman appears on our list once again for his amazing songs on the album of Ghajini. From the gorgeous 'Guzarish' to the jazzy 'Bekha', Rahman showed that he is one of the best. He once again works with Prasoon Joshi as lyricist and once again they create magic. Each track is sung exceptionally with the vocals on 'Kaise Mujhe' by Benny Dayal and the aforementioned 'Guzarish' by Javed Ali and 'Bekha' by Karthik. These are ones to put on your I-must-hear-this list! Another outstanding album by the master!

. Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi

For his first film as director after eight years, Aditya Chopra went with the composing duo Salim-Suleiman. So how did they do? They hit it out of the park, and fans love this album. Suleiman was ecstatic that the songs were such a hit saying, "When we put in a lot of hard-work to make our music we hope that the audience will like our music. We are very happy that people are enjoying the music." Full of great songs, the hits on the album (internationally as well) include 'Dance Pe Chance' 'Haule Haule' and 'Phir Milenge Chalte Chalte' as well as the beautiful ballad 'Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai'.

3. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na

A R Rahman composed some fantastic songs this year and many of them were on the album for JTYJN. He only used the good notes when writing these songs, and surprised everyone with the new young sound that matched perfectly with the cast and story. Each song could stand on its own and be declared fabulous. 'Kabhie Kabhie Aditi' is full of spark and happiness, 'Pappu Can't Dance' is full on fun, 'Jaane Tu Mera Kya Hai ' Aditi' is beautiful while the Jai version of the song is mind-blowingly good, 'Nazrein Milana Nazrein Churana' has a very catchy tune, the jazzy 'Tu Bole' (sung by Rahman) is a surprise but again fantastic, and finally Imran's favorite 'Kahin To' is one of the prettiest songs that has released in 2008. Our reviewer raved about the album, giving it 4/5 stars and said, "It is refreshing, the lyrics are brilliant and some of the most beautiful voices have been chosen to accompany it. Once again, A. R. Rahman proves that he was, is and will forever remain a musical genius that delivers a knockout album each and every time!"

2. Jodhaa Akbar

One of the most highly anticipated films of 2008 was Ashutosh Gorwariker's magnum opus Jodhaa Akbar, starring the beautiful Aishwarya Rai and the gorgeous Hrithik Roshan. An epic period piece that at heart is a love story, the music for the film had to live up to the majesty and classic time of the film and keep the pyaar in as well. Who better to take on that challenge than maestro A R Rahman? One of the best things that anyone can say about a song is that it gets into your soul, and with this collection of songs he achieves that with each and every one. The album includes the magnificently royal 'Azeem-O-Shaan Shahenshah', the sublime 'Jashn-e-Bahaara', the soothing and classical 'Khwaja Mere Khwaja', the devotional 'Mann Mohana', and, the highlight on the album full of amazing compositions, 'In Lamhon Ke Daaman Mein' is enchanting and powerful at the same time. I once again must quote my colleague who said in the review for JA, "This is Rahman in his purest form'completely uninhibited, brilliant and a supreme legend. With Jodhaa Akbar he comes up with an album that is complete in every way, shape and form. He stays true to the theme of the film yet goes above and beyond in delivering intricate and innovative compositions characterized by his distinct and inimitable style. Revered, regal and resplendent; hail the majestic king ' A. R. Rahman."

1.Rock On!!

Finally we have an album that was a another departure from "typical filmi" music and introduced audiences to a newish genre, Hindi rock. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy were the men behind the album and they delivered a jammin' rock piece that was full of wicked tracks!! The soundtrack was surprising because not only was it filled with full-on rock songs, which are rarely heard on soundtracks, it also had the star of the film actually singing his own vocals. Farhan Akhtar, heard on 6 of the 9 tracks, was a revelation not only as an actor but also as a singer. He excelled at 'Tum Ho To', 'Socha Hai', 'Sinbad the Sailor', and of course the title song 'Rock On!!' Other fantastic songs on the album include 'Ye Tumhari Meri Baatein' sung by Dominique Cerejo and 'Phir Dekhiye' sung by Caralisa Monteiro. The album is so good that when we were doing our list of 25 best songs we had a hard time not including most of the songs on the album. With its new take on what a Hindi film soundtrack can be and with the vocals of Farhan, this album definitely was the one the Rocked our world in 2008.

There were many other great albums that had some amazing songs, but sadly we had to stop at 10. It is not only the composers and lyricists but also the singers that make the song, and Bollywood has some the best in the world. We love our Bollywood music and thank everyone in the music industry for giving us such amazing music to fill up our world!
