Once there was a Brahmin who was very kind and a true devotee to Lord Shri Ram. He was very poor in wealth but not poor in his wealth of knowledge. Everyday he used to go to mandir and read Ramayan there. The only source of his income was any donations given to him.
There was a Business man who also used to come to the mandir to listen to Ramayan. But he always used to leave early before the chapter finishes (before Bhoog) so that he does not have to give any money to the Brahmin (any Dakshina/donation). He used to do this on a daily basis.
After few months when the Brahmin announced that the Ramayan will be finished on the next day and there will be aarti and bhoog. so he asked everyone to come to this occasion. The business man thought that he will not come otherwise he will have to give money to him.
Hanuman to Lord Ram: My Lord, this Brahmin is very kind and a true devotee of yours. He reads Ramayan without any expectations of any fruits either from the people to whom he reads or to you but instead he reads it with pure devotion and from his heart. Hence I kindly request you to give him something in return.
Lord Ram says: yes, Hanuman you are right. What shall we give him?
Hanuman says: My Lord, you know very well. I don't need to say anything since you know everything. But if you ask me then I would say that since he and his family are very poor so please give him some money.
Lord Ram: as you wish Hanuman. Tomorrow after the Aarti, we will give him Rs 1000. (that was old times and at that time Rs 1000 were a lot of money!) it will be your job to give him the money.
The business man heard all this conversation. Since he had a very stingy nature he thought that this Brahmin will get so much money tmw when he himself wants it. he quickly thought of something and ran to the Brahmin's house. There he said to Brahmin that since you have been reading Ramayan I would like to give you something in return. Please accept this Rs500 from me and in return I ask you that all the money that you will get tmw will be mine. I don't care if it will be only Rs1 or more. The Brahmin was very satisfied and thanked God for Rs500 and happily accepted that money as he needed that for his family.
Now the following day, after the aarti everyone left the temple at night. the business man quickly ran to the donation box to see how much money was in there. But he only found few rupues donated by the people.
He then thought that maybe this Rs1000 will be somewhere in the temple in a pot or in a bag. He started to search everywhere but couldn't find anywhere. In the end he got very frustrated and tried.
He then went to the Statue of Lord Hanuman and said that this person said that he will give Rs1000 but where is it? In his ignorance and anger he took his leg out to kick the Statue of Lord Hanuman. As soon as he was about to do that, Hanuman ji held his leg very tightly!!!!
Now the business man got really scared as he had never seen a statue getting alive and holding someone. He then realised his mistake and apologized.
Hanuman ji said on one condition he will let him go. The businessman agreed. Hanuman asked him to go to the Brahmin's house straight away and give him Rs500 more.
The businessman had no other option but to agree. So he learnt his lesson and in this way and the Brahmin got money in order for him and his family to live on.
