If Laxman had been unconscious in the sense in which we think, then how did he remember his true nature? Valmiki Ramayan clearly says that remebering himself as part of Vishnu, Laxman became heavy. To Hanuman, he became light because of friendly feeling towards him. So Laxman's unconsciousness was a special kind of unconsciousness, which is not found in us ordinary mortals. As an analogy, you can think of Vishnu's yoga-nidra in which he is sleeping in one sense but also awake in another sense.
