Over 80-million cable and satellite homes may continue to watch the re-runs of old television shows for some more days as the Federation of Western Indian Cine Employees (FWICE), the body representing over 35,000 workers in the TV industry, scrapped its agreement with the producers guild on Thursday.

On Wednesday, FWICE had signed a Memorundum of Understanding (MoU) with the producers guild, in which they had agreed that the workers will move from a per-day payment regime to a monthly salary structure. However, according to sources, a large section of the workers voiced their grievances as they were not happy with the settlement.

"We are scrapping the MoU signed by us yesterday on the basis of the reaction of the workers towards it," Dinesh Chaturvedi, Secretary, FWICE said.

According to MoU signed on Wednesday, the base-salary of Spot Boys would have been Rs 15,300 as opposed to a daily payment of Rs 470, while 'Hair Dressers' would have got a minimum monthly salary of Rs 51,000, including conveyance.

"The producers went ahead and signed the MoU with FWICE and were hoping that we will foot any increase in the payment-outgo to workers. We are not going to increase our expenses and the producers will have to pay from their own pocket anything extra they promise these workers in the future," a senior executive of a leading entertainment channel said.

There are about 22 different crafts related with the production and shooting of television and films. Till date, workers were getting paid on a per day or per-shift basis and there was no incriments on their daily-wages for the past three-years causing them to go on a strike.

Nearly 35,000 workers of the TV industry were not working for the past 11 days demanding an increase in their daily wages.

This brought down the shooting work of over 55 television shows to a near halt. As a result, all entertainment channels had to air the repeat episodes of old serials and shows as they did not have fresh episodes of the ongoing serials.

Because of this, the weekly viewership ratings for the week November 10-17 saw up to 55 per cent drop in the overall ratings of all entertainment channels.

there's an update on this article:

Last reported, it was costume, make-up and hair dressers' association, and sound recordists who protested outside the FWICE office. While, the demands of the sound recordists were met, the representatives of costume, make-up and hair dressers association left empty handed but not before they promised to hold protests daily outside the FWICE office from tomorrow. As they aired their displeasure, a team of camera attendants and lightmen went in to meet FWICE officials only to return disappointed. They were then followed by resenting production managers.

A representative of the camera attendants says, "Early in October, it was agreed to hike our daily wage by 7 per cent. That meant we were to get Rs. 808 per shift. The saddest part is that camera attendants were totally ignored in the on-going discussions."

The strike will continue indefinitely and the agitated will be hoping for a favourable verdict when the FWICE officials and all four producers' bodies meet again on 28 November.

From today's developments it seems that you haven't heard the last word on the strike.

OMG!! Forget about watching DMG in November!!

then whats this?? from INDYA.COM... it confirms sound recordists etc have called OFF their strike..and evrything is OKAY now...
The strike and settlement go hand in hand

Even after the strike came to an end it was followed by yet another strike! This time it was the sound recorders, who are still not happy with their salary hike. However, unlike the earlier one this strike was short lived.

On behalf of the workers and producers, FWICE (Federation of Western India Cine Employees) signed an agreement on Wednesday which had all the clauses and the increased pay of the people. According to the sources, soon after the strike got over yesterday, there were some fractions of people (sound recorders) who did not agree with what their leaders had signed. Objecting this, all the sound recorders had a meeting where they decided to keep mum till their demands were met.

With so many losses already being endured by the small screen industry, producers are worried about the strike. Ratna Sinha, the producer of Babul Ka Aangan, was hoping the strike to get over by the end of the day. He says, "We've suffered enough losses, I just hope it gets over very soon."

Suhas Rane, one of the sound recorders says, "It all happened due to some misunderstandings between group leader and the sound recorders." Sound recorders demanded for a hike raising their wages to Rs.51, 000 on a monthly basis, which has now been settled at 48,000 per month including Rs. 100 as the conveyance of each day. For the boom man, it has increased to Rs. 21, 000 which too includes conveyance charges of Rs. 100 daily.

There are two basic units in the television industry; 'Cameras' which capture the visuals and second are the 'Recorders' that capture sound. Sound recorders hence play a very important role in the industry.

With sound recorders calling off their strike, shooting are most likely to start by today evening or tomorrow. This will further enable the channel to keep their viewers entertained from Monday with brand new episodes.
