It's Dostana , versus Deshdrohi at the box office this Friday, and if the promos and interest on social networking sites are to be believed, then Deshdrohi appears to be an even bigger film than Dostana . A classic case of David taking on Goliath!
Off late Deshdrohi has gained a very huge fan following. Originally scheduled to release on November 7 alongside Quantum of Solace , Deshdrohi is now releasing on November 14 alongside Dostana . While ideally one would not see this as a potential competition to Dostana , recent developments suggest Deshdrohi in itself has many people looking forward to its release.
If the buzz on some social networking websites is to be taken into consideration, Deshdrohi has almost gained a cult status. Sites like Facebook and Orkut have fan clubs of both the actor and the film. Facebook itself has 4 fan clubs going by the names 'Fans of KRK Deshdrohi ', 'DESHDROHI LOVERS', 'KRK Fan CLUB' and 'Kamal Khan Fan Club' accounting to more than 300 fans of the film and the actor. And these fans don't just include an average internet surfer but also many media personalities as well as film celebrities including names like Kunal Kapoor, Chitrangda Singh, Goldie Behl and Shrishti Arya.
Filmmaker Junaid Memon who directed the Mahima Chaudhary starrer thriller The Film a few years back has left a post on his Facebook profile saying he is trying to organize a special show of the film for his friends and would also invite media. And he is doing all this despite having no connection with the film.
KRK clearly is aware of his target audience and planned a release only in single-screens across Mumbai. But one can't deny that KRK has gained several fans even before his film has released. And this time it ranges from the single-screen audiences to the multiplex goers as well. However, it seems that the fans are in for a disappointment.
The film recently gained publicity for its topical theme which talks about how the North Indians are mistreated in states like Maharashtra. While it was expected that the film would face rough weather by MNS, surprisingly the political party has given a green signal to Deshdrohi . But it's the Maharashtra Government who doesn't want to take any chance and in an attempt to avert any chaos in its cities has banned the screening of the film across Maharashtra.
But though banned in Maharashtra, looks like Dostana may face stiff competition in small metros and towns in other states where single screens are the order of the day. And added to this is the subject of two metrosexual men indulging in horseplay in Dostana . Wonder how many people from rural India will buy such a concept. As Friday looms near, the speculations keep on rising...
